A note mostly for my own reference. It's 48° and 80% humidity in LA today and I was comfortable walking outside in jeans, a ls cotton tee, and my puffer. If it were windy, I'd also want a hat and scarf.

Sounds like an amazing trip! I've been dreaming of a multi-week trip on another continent. It's the one part of pre-pandemic life that we haven't quite gotten back to yet. I hope you're able to catch the tulips in the Netherlands!

My experience of northern Europe in early spring is that it's not all that different from spring in New England: occasionally very pleasant, more often than not chilly, windy, and damp. Coastal areas and higher elevations will feel colder. For temps in the 40s-50s F, with the occasional sunny day in the 60s, I'd want hat/gloves/scarf and thermal baselayers (I prefer thin silk over synthetic or merino; I find it does a much better job avoiding that overheated feeling when you're transitioning between outdoor and indoor spaces). Granted, I do run cold, and I do like to be prepared to spend all day outdoors, whether in an urban or rural setting.

Definitely bring a fully waterproof/windproof coat with room for layers underneath. Definitely bring your most comfortable walking/shoes boots with decent water resistance (I hesitate to call anything short of a rubber boot truly waterproof, but you want something less clunky and more breathable than that). I would probably stick to pants and avoid skirts/dresses, but only because I am so prone to ripping and snagging tights that I find dresses aren't practical for travel outside of midsummer temps when I can wear them with bare legs.

Have you thought about your luggage situation? Do you have a good day bag for walking around? In transitional weather, I like having a tote/daypack/large crossbody with me so I have someplace to stash waterproof layers on days when the weather is iffy, and to stow my accessories and layers if it warms up in the afternoon.

Suntiger, that rain cape is awesome!

Lynn, I used to have those same J.Jill pants! My ponte pants from Brass are quite similar so I'll add those to the list. I appreciate the insights from someone who also runs warm.

notsaf, I'm ALWAYS hot on planes and I suspect masking isn't going to help matters. Good advice on the lodging! As far as coats, I'm pretty set on bringing my trench. It's lined and hooded and my puffer fits beneath if need be. I never get to wear it in California!

rachylou, I've never been to San Francisco in the winter, just May and July.

Definitely a packable puffer and a packable raincoat- like the rain cape below. Seconding Athleta- they have things that pass as regular, non-gear clothes that look travel friendly.

Jenn- I am like you, I tolerate cool/cold weather well and actually like feeling on the edge of a slight chill. I hate feeling hot. In Spain @ the temps you will likely encounter I was comfortable in a light weight sweater or heavier long sleeve tee with a light weight raincoat in the 50's. I didn't take a cardigan but that would have worked also. Jeans and mid weight ponte pants were perfect. I didn't take any yoga type pants but they would worked also. I felt a little warm in the heavier weight ponte in the 60's + but they were OK in the mid to low 50's. I did need the light weight puffer a few nights when it dropped into the low 40's. I would have felt a little too cool in a dress or a skirt with bare legs so would have wanted some tights or legging underneath.
Hope this helps.
BTW J Jill wherever pants worked well for me. They dried fairly quickly. https://www.jjill.com/product/.....?color=780

How exciting! I’ve done this kind of travel a lot and never take more than a carry on. I also don’t pile up on layers for the airport/train because I tend to get hot on the move, so some heavier pieces have to be able to fit in the bag. I’m always happier under packing. As others have said, I would start with footwear and outerwear. White sneakers and ankle boots will take you everywhere, and you’ve already put those in your finds. I tend to avoid longline cardigans on trips because they are bulky to pack, and stick with pull over sweaters, cotton or wool depending on the season, tees with short or long sleeves or no sleeves to layer underneath also depending on temps. Don’t forget about pjs and even slippers, because sometimes the coldest part of a travel day is the lodging, which Europeans do not keep as warm as Americans. Good socks and a stylish knit hat also go far. For this, I’d be tempted to take my 3-in-1 Vosque coat from Patagonia. If you don’t have something similar, think about investing. Have a great trip!

You’ve looked up average weather for your destinations, right? Average high temps for Paris for March & April are 54 and 60.

Your travel capsule looks good to me so far. We did a similar month in N Europe a few years back with only a carry-on. I wore layers, mostly black key pieces with brighter scarfs for accents.

I had a waterproof hooded 3/4 coat that was super! We spent so much time walking in the cities it was indispensable. and looked good in museums as well. If I was going now I would also add a black packable puffer, (I have the same one you do) And zip pockets in the coat/vest for little things are a must for me

Some of my other pieces:

Waterproof black ankle boots
Black jeans
Black skirt, (washable knit, I have an EF one and Eloqui)
Grey cotton/wool Zip cardigan (purchased on the trip)
Black knit Dress
Black leggings
Black vest -The Bernardo Eco plume is so light, soft and cozy
Long sleeve stripe top
Black long sleeve top
Black short sleeve top

Have fun!! Im jealous. I love traveling in the cooler weather.
I'll be teaching in Italy this summer so Im thinking about travel packing again....It's lovely, but in the 90s I just get so Hot! and a whole different type of packing....lol

Yes, if you run VERY hot it might not be an issue for you. But truly, it won't be a waste if you find one in black or one of your other key neutrals...you'll use it at home, too, at times, or for any trips to Seattle or Colorado or elsewhere.

Those spots in Europe can be cold in summer. Pack a cashmere sweater for light weight and warmth and a rain coat for sure. Buy a cheap umbrella there when you need it. Packed they look odd under X-rays your lugggage may be pulled for a hand search. Not fun and DH laughs. I abandon the umbrella in a stand before leaving. Take boots or waterproof shoes and plan on rain every day.

Another vote for Icebreaker merino (the lighter weight version) - it works for both my current subtropical humid climate (HK's winter) & back home (UK's spring).

Depending on how hot or cold you run, I'd also recommend bringing along a hooded dickie (I use mine as a pillow on the flight) & a big scarf (I use mine as an inflight blanket).

I understand the worry about buying wool. But if you don't, definitely get Heattech layers!! You will freeze otherwise. They will dry quickly, too.

EF makes a whole "basics" line in some kind of poly, I think -- probably available second hand. Since you wear black well, you will find it more easily, I suspect, than someone who does not wear black (like moi). The trouble is, it's not warm for the temps you will be facing and if you are going to be outdoors a lot -- which you probably will be -- more than you are used to, I imagine -- then the cold will seep under your skin.

Also, just in case -- I suspect that lightweight merino is totally wearable in your California winter, Icebreaker is a fantastic source. You can probably get some on sale right after Christmas. The merino sweaters I posted are thin, lightweight, but layer-able. In my climate (like Seattle's) I wear them between October and the end of May. So in your climate, they would probably be useable between Dec-Feb. I layer under mine, quite often (or over) -- you would wear them in your climate without additional layers except maybe a coat.

The short sleeved tees are wearable in my summer temps -- not during a heat dome (where we get heat about 100 F) but up to 78 F or so.

No practical advice, but the trip sounds wonderful, and yes I think you will feel cold coming from LA especially. You will have access to some interesting sustainable brands so perhaps leave a bit of space (budgetary, physical and psychological) for additions?

I’m thinking maybe jeans, wide leg pants, a dress, a skirt, and tops in a few sleeve lengths. Things (jeans excepted) that I can easily handwash in hotel rooms and not worry about wrinkles.

Then I can add a few toppers/coats in various weights, a good travel scarf, and appropriate footwear.

How AMAZING! Very happy for you and your family, Jenn :)

I'm with Anchie. Early Spring in Europe can feel like a cold Winter's day. Lots of rain too.

Did I understand this correctly: you want to wear 4 to 6 items for the entire month and that includes the travel outfit?

Jenn, I did a trip to Bavaria at Easter 17 years ago and was amazed at how cold it was, especially at Neuschwanstein Castle in the Bavarian Alps. I had a puffer, beanie and gloves and was thankful for them and lived in my pants and jeans. I know my tolerance for cold is very low, but if travelling there again at that time of year, would have a couple of Uniqlo heat tech tops to keep warm. Layering is key, as we also experienced some warmer weather too. I’m thrilled that you are going on this wonderful trip.

I’m going to have to think on this because I don’t want to freeze, but I also don’t want a bunch of things I’ll never be able to wear at home in California.

One thing I have done on my last several longer trips is to book @ 2-3 day stay in an apartment with a washer about halfway through the trip. I prefer to hang dry my clothes so this allows plenty of time for them to dry.

Jenn- I am so happy for you. It sounds like a wonderful trip.
I frequently travel in the shoulder seasons in Europe and have found the following to be must-have items for me.
A pair of waterproof shoes***- nothing worse than wet shoes! Currently I have been taking my Merrill Sierra light weight hikers.
Packable puffer jacket - I put it in a stuff sack and use as a pillow on the plane
A looser fitting lightweight raincoat that can worn on it's own or layered over the puffer.
A shirt that can be worn on it's own or as a light weight jacket.
Ponte pants- a lighter weight and heavier weight pair + some jeans
Silk long underwear (pants) - these have saved me from freezing multiple times and sometimes sub as pajama pants
Snugger fitting long sleeve layering top - previously used a silk top but have switched to merino wool. I wear this on it's own or under other tops for warmth.
Hope this helps.

Yes, that's the type of weather -- early spring is cool and damp and of course colder at night. Those times of year are really great for merino in lighter weight, sometimes layered over another merino layer, sometimes not, or sometimes over or under some other fabric.

The items you've shown look excellent. If you can fit one of your really pretty toppers to go over pants or a dress in case you go out, you'd probably feel more like yourself. And/or floral scarves to amp up that element. Or one floral blouse that does not wrinkle.

Thanks for all the suggestions and, anchie and sf, for the ideas about what to expect from the weather. It sounds a lot like fall/spring in Seattle? I haven't lived in that moist of a climate in a long time, but I remember it.

Suz, thanks so much for that detailed capsule! That helps a lot!

Sal, your wardrobe sounds similar to what I would bring, and good idea to start from the shoes.

Cardiff Girl and kkards, those are great thoughts about where to shop. I will start looking at Patagonia and Athleta.

Taking all that into account, some pieces from my current wardrobe that may work to start.

How exciting Jenn! We went to Italy in April and May- Rome north- and it wasn’t warm - but it was great travelling weather. I took two skirts, one pair of culottes, one pair lulemon joggers and one pair of jeans. A light puffer, a light jacket, a gear hoodie and a variety of tops from tanks to long sleeves. I did wear a puffer and the hoodie together on one day even though they were an awful combo!! I did also take leggings - at least one pair - I can’t remember.

I did laundry a couple of times along the way. We did 2-5 night stays so it was realistic. I did bring sandals and wear them but I could have not taken them.

I would work up from footwear - maybe boots, sneakers and one other choice?
