Updated with a cardigan I just ordered from Madewell, and a navy Northface quilted jacket I've had for a few years. I think the jacket length will work with most of my toppers.

I have to admit I love planning my wardrobe for a trip almost as I enjoy planning the trip itself :) I usually start thinking about outfits as soon as I buy a plane ticket. Though I do have the bad habit of using upcoming travel as an excuse to buy a bunch of new stuff. My resolution now is to take items that I already own and save my money for shopping at my destination!

Oh good, you’ve decided to add a lightweight puffer. I was in Zurich last January and although the temperatures were above freezing, the wind from the lake was absolutely biting. October won’t be as cold but I think you’ll feel a chill.

SarahD8- You’re right, the Moto jacket is not going to work with the longer cardigans. I’ll swap out for a shorter sweater and think I’ll forgo the Moto for my mid-weight puffer that hits at the top of my thigh. I’ll wear my sneakers with the dresses- had intended them to be casual daytime outfits for Rome/Florence.. In Zurich I plan to wear jeans and the long sleeved tops. Probably with said cardigan and puffer for warmth.

Angie- this is exactly the kind of feedback I needed. Will add some warmer items- maybe a lightweight merino sweater or two and the puffer.

notsaf- i love traveling in the fall. Touristing in cities in the summer heat is just miserable for me. I’ll heed your advice about warmer sleepwear. I run hot and sleep in nothing even here in Maine in the winter (sorry if TMI) but better to be prepared!

eta: Maybe my navy Boden Hengrave coat (added above) would be better than the puffer? I’m trying to stay in “dressy casual” territory rather than skew too casual.

Rome is October is *beautiful* -- perhaps my favorite time of the year to visit!

I would also suggest something warmer for sleep: southern European buildings are not as air-conditioned or heated as American ones, and often run on the cold side.

Looks like this could fit in one carry-on (especially if you wear a heavy layer on the plane)...

Have a fabulous time!

Exactly what SarahD8 said. You will need a coat in Zurich in October! I also think Italy might be colder than you think - especially at night. I'd add warmer stuff too.

Fun trip! Enjoy and safe travels.

It looks like you have lots of options for Italy (you mention jeans and tees for warmer days, and knee covering dresses for visiting religious sites). But have you thought through what you will wear in Zurich? Or maybe the cover-your-knees brief is relevant there too? What footwear do you plan to wear with the dresses?

I personally run quite cold so I would want some kind of proper coat for Zurich in October. I’m picky about proportions, so I might not want to layer the cropped, fitted jacket over the longer cardigans. Ymmv and it might work fine but I would suggest trying on before you zip up your suitcase!

I think the color scheme looks great. Very mix and match able and I like how the cardigans introduce pattern.

I’ve so enjoyed everyone’s travel capsules on the forum so decided to share my own. I have an upcoming 8 day trip (not including travel days) at the beginning of Oct. We’ll be in Rome and Florence for 3 nights each, then Zurich for the last two. The weather in Italy looks to be warm during the day and comfortably cool at night. Zurich will obviously be colder.

I’m taking a carry on and sharing a larger checked bag with my partner. I have overpacked terribly on my last 2 trips to Europe and have resolved to cut back this time even if I feel anxious about not having enough options!

Most everything is in my finds below. I think I have enough short sleeved shirts which I’ll pair with jeans for warmer days. The dresses will be good for Italy because they cover my knees- a requirement to enter most religious sites/cathedrals etc. Two cardigans for layering and one medium weight jacket. One pair of low booties and my Taos Stars. I didn’t include my plane outfit which will be leggings and a lightweight tunic. Also will bring shorts and a tank top for pajamas.

Any thoughts from other Fabbers? Too much stuff? Not enough? Does the color scheme seem sufficiently interchangeable?
