Excellent capsule. I might be tempted to pack another item in the bottom category, but that's just my rule of thumb. That dress probably fits the bill.

If you want to see Amsterdam like a local, DM me. Spring is well on its way, but don't forget to pack umbrellas. waterproofs etc.

I have traveled a lot — always in a carry-on — and I think your collection will fit just fine, especially if you have an additional personal bag to carry for overflow. I always need to be very careful about footwear, so my initial concern was whether these shoes will be comfortable enough for so much walking. They wouldn’t be for me, but I’m sure this is something you’ve thought through. I love those Rothy’s. Are they very cushiony? Is there good arch support?

Hi Jen, I traveled for a year with a carry-on and messenger bag. I did not put my puffer or waterproof shell in my suitcase, and I wore my bulkiest shoes on every flight. It looks to me like your well planned travel capsule should fit just fine. One question, is your trench waterproof? That will be important in Europe. So happy and excited for you to have this wonderful travel opportunity! Enjoy every moment!

Looks like a well thought out capsule. And you are bringing my favorite - the velvet duster! My problem with carryon only is always the toiletries and I can't imagine doing it for a month but it makes perfect sense since you will be moving around. Have a great time, sounds fabulous!

Haha, at first I thought I would not comment because, as someone who runs ridiculously cold, I would have recommended to bundle yourself up making you laugh at me! But I see that many fabbers recommend the same. I consider Spring a cold season therefore taking the whole set of warm pullover-hat-scarf-gloves-warm socks- puffer is always a good idea!

A gorgeous capsule. I visited Paris in May 15 years ago and it was unseasonably cold and rainy. I ended up buying a trench coat as I only had a velvet blazer to keep me warm. The moral of the story is, if you do get cold, there are always amazing shops that you can buy a souvenir item from. 15 years later and I still wear and love that trench which reminds me of a wonderful holiday.

Gorgeous capsule and very efficient!

I run about as cold as you run hot, and I have never regretted building my travel capsules around what I know about my own quirky physiology (I'm the one with cashmere sweaters in my bag for high summer trips). So go forth with confidence! (And if you do get chilly, well, you can pick up whatever layer or accessory you need there.)

Like others, I am concerned you may be chilly -- I definitely would need warmer clothing in late March in Northern Europe! -- but you do have a puffer, and that can answer to a lot.

Thanks for the up-to-the-minute experience, Jules! The Eileen Fisher poncho is wool, and I plan to wear it as a scarf. Give me a few and I'll find a photo of how that works...might have to dig deep, as it's been a while since I've needed anything warming my neck. (Also, that's too funny about the beret!)

I hate the feel of long sleeves under a topper, so for me, those are for middling sort of weather, which I suppose I might need since we'll be there well into April. I'm much warmer with a tank under a cashmere sweater or sweatshirt than I am in a long-sleeved top.

ETA: Found a photo. Had to go back to 2017!

salt-sea, this will be a low-key trip without a lot of intense activity. My husband is on chemotherapy and won't be up for big hikes or bike adventures. We're planning a lot of museums, cafes, and delicious meals.

Roberta, the duster is actually the one thing that I could probably leave out if I needed to. It's also a signature piece and the one part of this capsule that makes me feel most like me, so if I can bring it, I will!

Joy, we'll be mostly inland this trip. Lots of rivers, no oceans. (That's okay, though, plenty of ocean at home.)

In Paris right now and echo what others say about weather. The first day we as hardy Canadians were laughing a bit at how bundled up the locals are, given what are ‘spring’ temperatures for us. But after a few days of walking 16-17K steps from morning to evening, in variable weather (wind, light rain), I understand why people are in light puffers with wool hats and scarves to easily put on/take off as needed! I’ve also been grateful for the fleece lined gloves I brought last minute. Cheap berets are available everywhere so I picked one up, much to my kids’ chagrin as they find them cliché as seen on younger tourists (I observed that they are common on local senior aged women, and then got offered a seat on the metro today…)
Your capsule looks good! The footwear will echo the main trends here. I would just consider a woolly blanket scarf if you have one, and maybe more long sleeved tops?

Look like a great and versatile capsule to me, and if you wear the trench & boots on the plane, it should definitely fit into a carryon. Other than thin gloves which I just saw you note you are bringing, the only other thing I'd consider adding, if you are doing anything active (like a cycle tour, or a hike, or even a long walk on a potentially wet weather day), are some stretchy pants that won't take as long to dry as jeans. With a fairly long trip in the springtime in northern Europe; you'll probably encounter some wet weather. If you enjoy shopping while traveling, it could be fun to wait until you need something (another pair of sneakers, pants, etc) and find it on your travels. So long as you have room in your luggage for purchases. I've been eyeing that Ministry of Supply top - will be interested to hear how it performs.

The colors and fabrics look very satisfying, especially on gray days. The MaryJanes are a good choice for house shoes/slippers. I always pack slipper socks for the same reason.

I'm glad your trench has a hood; I found that essential on windy, wet days in Amsterdam and Paris. Then you don't have to carry an umbrella, which isn't much use anyway. The hood keeps your head AND your neck dry. Don't get me wrong, the duster is gorgeous, I just don't think it is very practical. The trench with your scarves will be just as handsome. I EDITED THIS TO SAY YOU MIGHT BE GOING TO FANCIER DINNERS THAN ME - WEAR THE DUSTER IN GOOD HEALTH! (Sorry for the all caps.)

And I encourage you to buy something fabulous to wear while you're there!

LaPed, I've only worn the Ministry of Supply tee once, but the fabric is lovely. In practice, it hangs more like a short-sleeved tee than the cut would suggest lying flat, but I like that it doesn't cling to the upper arms. I haven't washed it yet, so I can't report back yet as to how it holds up over time.

Angie, I'm excited to go to Amsterdam. We skipped it last time were in the Netherlands, as we spent our time with family friends near Utrecht, where Kevin lived as a child. This time, we're spending some time in North Brabant (Efteling! but also where some genealogical research says parts of my family came from), along with a day in Amersfoort, before making our way to Amsterdam.

Jaime, the Rothy's are essentially slip-ons and they'll be used for the exact purposes you describe.

Irina, I keep trying the whole t-shirt under sleeveless dress thing and I've determined I just can't. It makes me feel like a kindergarten teacher. I run very hot, so I'm not at all worried about being cold, but we did purchase some heattech pieces for my husband, who's the opposite. Also, see my note to Jaime above about the slip-ons!

kkards, I seriously can't remember the last time I was cold. Maybe standing on the Bay Bridge vista in San Francisco wind a few years ago? The Eileen Fisher poncho is my wool scarf, though. It's a great travel companion and doubles as a blanket.

pirouette, I will bring gloves and a beanie. The EF poncho doubles as a scarf. Actually, that's how I wear it most. Maybe it's because I live in California and don't need them that often, but I think I put gloves and hat into a non-wardrobe category in my head so just didn't include them here. In my mind, they're more like an umbrella--functional, but not part of my wardrobe.

This could be a tight fit into a carryon. You are wise to wear the heaviest, bulky pieces. Traditionally this is a cold time in Europe. If you are near the sea, it will be windy too, and damp. This is not a normal year, so be ready for anything. Have fun with this adventure.

Like Angie I’m concerned that you’ll be cold, but maybe I just run colder than I thought. I’d throw a large wool scarf/shawl into the mix. Can work on the plane as an extra blanket and can add warmth to any outfit.
I think this would fit into a carry one, especially if you’re open to using compression packing cubes.

Looks perfect. I always travel with slip on shoes for inside the hotel and the plane, but that is my only potential addition.

FABULOUS! Sounds like an incredible trip. Thrilled for you and hubs!

I hope you will be warm enough, Jenn! Spring on foot in Western Europe is chilly. But I might run colder than you, so hence my concern :)

Stay out of your tourist areas in Amsterdam, as much as you can, anyway. Sooooo much better away from them. Especially the food. Hit de Jordaan!!

Gorgeous travel capsule, and your itinerary is enviable. Have a wonderful time!

I've been eyeing that Ministry of Supply merino top and would love to hear what you think of it. The cut looks so elegant and versatile.

I love your laundromat stories, runcarla! I'd totally be down for that.

The boots do have zippers, so that'll be easy for security.

One hiccup: I just tried on the Lands' End dress and am returning it. Time is getting tight, but I'm ordering a couple other options in the hopes that one works. Fingers crossed. This is a direct replacement for Eileen Fisher's system tank dress, which I loved and they don't make anymore.

This is a great capsule, Jenn, and I wouldn’t change a thing! I originally thought like Tanya about the limited number of pants, but picked up on the number of dresses you are bringing with you, and recognize you are more of a dress/skirt person than some folks.

Trench over puffer will work a trick for the coldest days. Besides a hat as suggested by Irina, maybe a pair of gloves, with or without fingers if you run the least bit cold.

Do the boots have zippers? If so, wear them for your travel days. DH and I had to remove all extraneous kit to get through security at the airport. DH had to remove belt, watch, and shoes, whereas I just removed footwear - I wore no jewellery. Socks for the yucky airport floor , and if you remove footwear during the flight.

Boots and sneakers in rotation will work fine. I pack thin flip flops that work as ‘house slippers’ similar to your plan for the Mary Janes.

With regards to laundry - use the washer/dryer if your accommodations have them, but I will submit that a couple of hours in a foreign laundromat can be an adventure! I have good memories of a hilarious morning in an Edinburgh laundromat with a raucous clientele and minder, the Liverpool laundromat with a most excellent bakery/cafe next door, a quiet early morning in a laundromat in Bath (nice to have a break from my travelling companions), and a history lesson on the Antonine wall from a patron at the laundromat in Falkirk!

ETA: I see ‘The Spruce Goose’ in Bath, UK is still in operation!

irina, good call on the hat. I'll bring a beanie for warmth. Not particularly worried about a sun hat this time of year. The Mary Janes are mostly for inside hotels and maybe train/car travel days.

Sal, I figured I'd wear the trench and boots on the plane, as well as either the duster or the yellow sweater. the puffer coat is packable and will go in my under-seat personal item so I can use it as a pillow.

rachylou, I'd die of heat exhaustion!

Gorgeous capsule!

No suggestions or comments except I think it will be a tight squeeze in a carry on. Def wear the trench and boots on the plane. But I don’t know what you could leave out either - spring is unpredictable. I have been known to add things to my son’s bags as they never take much with them! Or Jon’s!!.
