I DO NOT use the travel tote to tour with on my trips! (It's only for the plane or train commute). Instead, I carry one of my LARGE crossbodies with a wide strap. Like one of these from my bag capsule:

(When I get on the plane, I have my large crossbody AND the travel tote. Suitcase is checked )

This is my grey Patagonia backpack, which fits my computer and carryon stuff, but also is good for day use and even a hike. It's very streamlined, comfortable and durable. Not many pockets at all, which generally I like, but I do sometimes wish for a water bottle pocket.

When I'm not traveling for work (and don't need a laptop bag), my blue Tumi tote is my carryon bag and it's light enough that I can sightsee all day with it too. I do have a matching crossbody bag that I store in the tote for the plane and if I am checking into the hotel early I may leave the larger tote with the front desk and just carry the crossbody bag.

I travel with my Bao Bao backpack. It’s light and comfortable. I don’t like to carry it around places, I pack a crossbody or a tote bag for daily use. All my travels are in the cities so hardly a need for a big bag but if I have to, Bao Bao is very useful.

Ooooooh! This is one of my favorite topics. I love to talk about travel stuff. I use a black Travelon or Baggallini backpack if I need a backpack in the city. I think they are generally well-thought-out urban backpacks. Since I am team urban polish, I don't like the look of crinkled fabric and avoid those versions. But I always also include a Longchamp tote bag, black in winter and tan in summer. The totes are total workhorses for me at home and when travelling. They are a bit of a black hole, but that's both a benefit (they fit everything) and a weakness (I carry too much and things can disappear into the void). Anytime I use a tote, I also carry a crossbody bag or phone case since I want my money and phone to be secure.

I got this Everlane bag in black. Fits my laptop but it’s also pretty streamlined and modern looking. It is quite lightweight compared to my other computer backpacks and I plan to wear it as both an airplane travel bag (it fit easily under the seat on a recent trip to Tucson) and also around town for foot travel when I need some extra room. It was pretty packed for the plane, but looks pretty sleek when used as a day bag.

Most of our trips are birding trips, so I need something that fits my camera and binoculars. But I also have my ipad, noise cancelling headphones, a jacket, wallet, etc.

I use this Patagonia daypack, 26L Refugio. I used to use a North Face daypack but it had mesh that would catch on things on the underside of an airplane seat. This one doesn’t catch on anything and is a nice size, and excellent quality.

So.... I'm probably not the person to ask since I am always toting my computer when I travel and therefore need a bag that has enough padding/ protection to allow this.

My commuter backpack and travel is by Bellroy and I love it. It is strictly for the plane/ boat/ train/ bus or car trips -- I rarely use it as a regular daypack because it is larger than I'd like for that and in summer months would make my back too warm. But I have worn it as a city day pack in colder months and it's excellent for that.

I also have a convertible tote/ backpack by Bellroy that I use sometimes when travelling more casually. This does not work for the computer but it's a brilliant picnic type of bag -- has a bit of insulation and space for water bottles, etc.

I am actually looking for a nice looking daypack myself, not gearish but capable of going for a day hike and so on. So I'll be following suggestions here.

It depends on activities and location, but for less rugged, more urban travel, I have a Tumi Voyageur convertible backpack/tote in navy blue nylon that has worked really well for me for many years. I’ve taken it everywhere from hiking in the Alps through spending the day walking around Paris.

What kind of a backpack or tote (and what color?) do you travel with? I’m talking about a nice looking piece you would carry on to an airplane but that also works for a day of walking around or touring. I’m partial to a soft backpack — it’s what I’ve used for eons — but I’m open to hearing about other options and how they work for you — because this old thing isn’t cutting it style wise and it’s way past time for an upgrade.
