Rachylou, if you can predict your moods in advance, that’s awesome!

KM, why not take comfort items, as long as you have the rest pared down?

Freckles, how nice to have souvenirs of your travels that you can wear all day!

Jules, im lazy. If we were to eat inside, we’d have to get dressed for real, but we don’t. It’s sort of a tradition with us that he can order pancakes from room service, and otherwise we eat at the cabana bar at the pool. But we just stay for a couple nights at a time. If we were there for a week, I’m sure it would get old, and I’d have to do as you do and get dressed. But I still think it’s relatively easy to predict activities and mood for that kind of stay.

I buy necklaces and earrings while on vacation. I also picked up a bracelet in Ireland as I had been looking for one for about ten years
and found it there so it was not really a vacation purchase.

Re: resort dressing, the resorts are casual and there is a lot of beach/pool time but at meals they do ask that you not wear (just) your swimsuit. There are also lots of pretty flowers and tropical inspired decor that influence my esthetic while I am there. So I like to have a casual but pretty cover up outfit of some kind for day. The type of shorts I might wear for hiking at the cottage back home just don’t feel great, but a flowing cover up with nice details does. At night I do like to dress up just a bit for dinner and any evening activities (which might be dancing or entertainment), because it feels festive and helps structure or break up the day somehow - it can get a bit monotonous, in the most pleasant way, staying at these all inclusive resorts for a week. Although my fellow Canadians who frequent these places are often quite casual, I notice the European and local guests also look nice for dinner.

Here's how emotional dressing affects my packing: I am an anxious person and I need some "security" items that will make me feel cozy and comforted. So I will bring things that are not necessarily practical, and I'm definitely not an efficient packer, partly because of this. That, and I also want to be "prepared for everything." I'm working on it and using post-trip tracking to pare down my luggage. But there will always be room for one or two comfort items...

I’m typically on the road for work 2x month and try to throw in fun along with it. I have a strong rule of only using a carry on and a tote bag while traveling,

My latest strategy has been to choose a very restricted color palette and then make sure I have a range of dressiness in the clothes. So I might have a pair of blue suit pants, a blue pencil skirt and blue jeans to pair against a blue blazer or cardigan. Then I can choose 3-4 tops from T-shirt to dress shirt to do the same. I’ll add in a print dress, scarves and jewelry to add more color and variation.

I’m also making a point of reviewing the capsule after each trip. Did I wear everything I brought? Could I have left something behind? What did I miss? I find documenting the capsule makes it easier for the next trip.

My issue is not so much around overpacking, but overshopping, out of anxiety that I don’t have the “right” items for a particular trip. For example, I’m headed to England & Scotland in a couple of weeks and have decided that wool sweaters will be too hot for schlepping around the urban areas. I was frequently overheated the last time I went to London. So I’m shopping a bit obsessively for a few good quality cotton sweaters. I’ve also purchased 2 new pair of boots for the trip, and 2 silk long sleeved tops for nice dinners out. This is “emotional shopping” to some degree and I need to be mindful about it lest I spend too much!

Honestly, I can't imagine/remember how I packed before the internet. Pinterest helps me put together a travel board that is mix and match and includes one dress, one jacket, two pairs of shoes, etc. Every trip lets me refine that board a bit until it can be packed without thought. I watch the weather forecast right up until I leave. And I pack twice as much underwear as I think I need.

I am traveling a ton this fall— on the road as we speak- so I’ve been thinking about how hard it can be to pack for places we’ve never been to before- and cultures that may be unfamiliar too. Over the years it’s become more and more important to me to find travel clothes that are wicking/cooling/ easy to wash in a sink, but also modest, covering knees and shoulders. Because I always seem to end up in a mosque or temple and it’s better to be respectful- AND bonus the more modest clothing also helps to prevent sunburn.

Freckles, how funny that you're clearly thinking about jewelry--you're buying it--but don't wear it as much on vacation. That's paradoxical. What kinds of jewelry do you buy on vacation? The only vacations where I can remember considering buying jewelry were on Murano, and in the street in Addis Ababa where they sell golden jewelry by weight.

Runcarla "civilized travel" Thanks for the explanation re jewelry.

Cindy, sounds good as long as you don't have anything "different" come up.

La Ped, I share your suspicion ;)

:-D
I tend to pack 2 or 3 pairs of pants and one more top than pants, and 1 pair of shoes. That doesn't count what I wear to get there. I try to keep it so it all mixes & matches so I don't have to THINK about it, I can just grab the pieces that suit my mood.

Of course, my travel is all uber casual so that simplifies it.

I always plan to death and make lists and then at the last minute throw things out of my suite case and add others so an emotional packer I am.
Always glad I do that though as in the long run the things I pitched and replaced with something else are the things I wear every day.
If I go away for a weekend wedding or some event like that I wear exactly what I brought but if I go on a true vacation the jewellery hardly gets worn. I stick with pearl studs and a scarf. When we last went to Ireland I picked up a piece of fabric that had the colours I packed and made a scarf. Wore it every day and didn't wear most of the jewellery I packed.
At home I change my jewellery every day and on trips buy tons of it but somehow on trips with loss of sleep and lots to do it is the thing that doesn't get worn.

I travel often, and different types of trip. (For work, for leisure, to visit family -- sometimes combined. Short haul, long flights. By plane, train, and/or car. One destination or multiple destinations.) To hot climates, temperate climates, mountain climates, climates exactly the same as home.

In short, no one solution works for all kinds of trip!

And I usually default to my ordinary approach. I consult the weather forecast. I give special consideration to special events (e.g. a presentation, party, meeting) and ensure I have a FFB outfit for each of those. I determine any gear needs for the trip. (Will I be hiking, swimming, working out in a gym, running?) And from that point I develop a mix and match capsule of items I love so that there's room for a bit of emotion. I like to bring multiple scarves because scarves provide so much interest and change the feeling of an outfit for me. Also, multiple pairs of shoes. This can present challenges but I would rather skimp on something else than footwear.

Like Joy, I travel light and do a mix and match capsule with a controlled palette. I don't find it too difficult to pack for a variety of situations, and feel comfortable in those situations with stuff from my closet. I've done a month in Ireland, Wales, and England with cross country hiking, city touring, theatre, and restaurants. Last year I spent 2 weeks in the Netherlands with activities as varied as participating in a sporting event, attending related meetings and ceremonies, travel by bus and train, walking the cities and towns, and dining out. I use the same roll aboard suitcase I've had for 15+ years for all my travel.

Since my clothes have been edited tightly to items that make me happy, I don't have problems with emotional dressing. My 2 dressiest dresses (not including my ball skirt) roll up so small you could put them in a sandwich bag! Dark wash jeans, white jeans, and black slacks can go just about anywhere.

I would have to say that my travel these days is pretty civilized and a little shopping is usually on the agenda, so I can supplement enroute. I still have a lovely bra I bought in London, England, hand knit wool socks purchased in Ireland, and 2 Breton t-shirts found in Amsterdam.

FWIW, I don't wear much jewelery and I certainly don't like to bring any when I travel. It can set off airport alarms and I would hate any memory of a trip to be tainted with the loss of something valuable.

*taking up the chant: ugly shoes, ugly shoes.

Angie, I learned in the forum recently that there is a difference between hiking boots and trail runners, and that the latter can look like sneakers. Let us see your ugly shoes and we’ll style your new outdoor punk look.

La Ped, I often think I’m leaving the emotions aside when I pack, but then I come home with some items ready to walk themselves to the laundry, they’ve been worn so much, and others untouched. Must be the New Englander in you that avoids that :)

Ginger, smart to make the “extras” be small things!

Greyscale, I don’t like to check things either. The best we’ve done is Germany- (grand)parents in Florida-conference in Vegas-(grand)parents-home to Germany, all with carry-on only, because there were other things were were taking back with us that used up the baggage allowance.

Jules, do you have activities at the resort that require special clothes? The closest I come to a resort stay is the hotel my son and I like. When we are there, I hardly wear clothes at all—yoga pants and swimsuit for the first hour of the day, then straight into the ocean, spend the day hanging out at the pool or in the spa, wearing a robe...no clothes required, lol.

Suntiger, were you attempting to avoid the question with your rabble-rousing? I caught you

I do what Ginger describes: throw in an extra option in some categories. But I make sure most things are mix and match. I’ve never been good at planning specific outfits. I’ve done pretty well by having a handful of possible combinations and trying on two or three different outfits in the morning if my original idea doesn’t feel right.

For summer travel at least, I can fit a week of options into my small carry on suitcase.

Edit: probably my monochrome wardrobe makes this easier since I don’t have to decide on different color schemes ahead of time.

I don't do the hiking or sporting outdoorsy thing. But I walk trails in Salt Lake City - (we have a loft there) - and I keep my very ugly trail shoes there.

I DO do all the other activities you mentioned though. I pack for Salt Lake City - (a 10 day trip with Sam) - every month too, but never share my capsules. I always bring dressier attire, and wear urban clothes daily any way. Sometimes more casual, and often a little dressy. A LARGE assortment of shoes because it's all walking. No car.

I struggle with this a bit, because I don't like planning outfits in advance. And I do feel funny about repeating things when I'm around the same people multiple days in a row. What I've done recently is figure out the key outfits/pieces (like jeans and tees, and a dress or two), but add in a couple of "alternate" pieces. So if this capsule includes three tees, I may add a fourth. If two casual dresses, I may add a third. I may also add low-bulk alternatives like a pair of shorts or a shrug, or another pair of thin shoes. (Part of this is also pure contingency planning. I hate to be dressed too hot/cold.)

This IS deliberate over-packing. But it gives me an element of choice when I decide what to wear each day, and that helps me as a mood/emotional dresser. This approach seems to work so far. I don't tend to travel light, however (mostly for hobby stuff that means bulky luggage anyway) so a few extra pieces aren't a hardship.

For my pleasure travel, I just bring more than I technically need and pay to check a bag if necessary. One checked bag for a family or friend group of 4 does not seem an excessive spend for my emotional comfort - I know I will enjoy my trip more if I feel good about my outfits, and I like having some room to bring back purchases made along the way. If I am worried about the airline losing the luggage I can still pack a capsule in my carry-on.
Luckily the type of Carribean resort travel I do every few years is by charter flights which include checked luggage in the all-inclusive price. I do totally agree with Joy about having a ‘resort’ capsule, I hold onto summer items that don’t work in the city or at the cottage but are perfect at a resort - florals, bright colours, pretty items I still like that maybe don’t feel current enough at home.

I don't give myself a lot of options when I travel, and I tend to just not sweat it. I know that traveling light makes me happy, more happy than the extra top/shoes/lip colour/whatever would. I also bring comfortable well-tested shoes, because *nothing* makes me unhappy like foot problems do!

It depends on the trip, but I usually start with one gear outfit that is also nice enough for a casual lunch/drink/whatever. Then I add one non-gear outfit that is nice enough for whatever the nicest event on my schedule is (usually this ends up being some sort of packable knit dress). That plus a sleeping outfit and outerwear would be enough for a four-day trip, as I generally bank on wearing everything twice (at least).

Granted, my travel tends to be recreational and casual. If I had work obligations, I would pack for that first, and be less inclined to repeat whole outfits. A modular approach like a skirt, a pair of trousers, a knit top, a woven top, and a topper that works with all four would be my preference for a conference or similar. Then I'd add one or two "play" outfits for sightseeing/hiking/whatever else is on the itinerary.

I guess I'm saying I set the emotions aside when I pack. I wouldn't bring something I actively dislike, and I actually do "ban" things from my travel capsule from time to time because I get sick of them. I have a black-and-white striped tank dress that's come on just about every summer trip I've taken for the past few years (I imagine the people I only see once a year associate it with me at this point), and I've made a deal with myself not to bring it anywhere next year, even though it's comfortable and versatile. Also, I can tell the fabric is starting to pill on the back where my backpack sits. So it may be destined for beach cover-up status in the near future. I guess I try to do the analysis and factor in my emotions before/after the trip, so I don't have to worry about it during.

Cardiff Girl, good point about travel often being to places that are new to us. That’s another reason I want the “security” of added pieces. Your daughter is a hoot.
