Aww to the swans and love that Berlin pic!
Great skirt! I like it most in #7! Do you have burgundy sandals to wear with it?
I like your white pants outfits a lot too!

Jonesy, matching the background of a print seems like a simple enough strategy, but I somehow never think of it I default to using a color from the flowers or whatever the pattern is. Thanks for that nudge. And thanks for the comment on the job hunt too.

Sally, this really is a 3-season skirt. Thanks for commenting.

I'm sorry to hear about your job search struggles. I join the chorus in loving the new white jeans, and the layered outfit with them (#14-15). The floral pedal pushers seem like they would work great for summer with a light-colored, short-sleeved button down.

RobinF, thanks for the commiseration & the compliments. Berlin is definitely worth a visit—lmk when you’re coming. :)

LaPed, “weather whiplash” haha, yes! Sounds like we are in harmony on the frustrations & pleasures of the season, but I still can’t get over my grumpy attitude towards outerwear.

Christina F, your post was a real turning point for me in recognizing what I had to deal with. Bit of a dope slap here, but I’m getting it figured out now.

Helena, when I asked my son to take those pix & he looked at what I was wearing, he said “we are dressed the same” & pulled up his sweatshirt to show me a tie-dye in the same colors as my tank top.

Irina, so true about the need for removable items! I tend to reserve scarves for winter cold, but see people here wearing them now.

Bijou, thanks for coming back to comment on that. I can’t say I’m surprised that academia prefers young candidates, but it was still disappointing.

Fashintern, rejection based on something you have no control over (age, gender, nationality, race, religion etc), is something to seriously consider it was their loss and not an organisation you want to work for. I'm sad to hear that the job hunting has been tough, hang in there.

I like #8! You look great in soft pink and cream.
I struggled with transitional weather in the past. I used to walk to work and it would be close to 10 degrees difference between morning and mid day. I bought a wider variety of jackets - cotton lined, linen unlined, rain coat, wool mix motto, trench, jean and chore jackets. It helps to choose a topper that fits to weather. I also like to use removable items - I might wear a linen scarf and a light cardigan in the morning and put them in a bag later. I’m thinking about adding a light weight puffer vest, something like Uniqlo sells. Can be added under a trench or a light jacket and should not take much space in a bag once removed.

#11 is just a great outfit. I prefer the shorts cuffed for sure. And the new jeans look great.

My take on spring is that you have to dress to accommodate weather whiplash. I think outerwear is the trickiest. No one *wants* to wear a puffer in May, but sometimes you gotta... And at the same time, you can't rely too heavily on toppers for interest, because sometimes it's too warm for one by midday. Footwear is tough too. Sandals and freeze in the morning, or sneakers and sweat in the afternoon?

But the little window between when the snow goes away and the black flies arrive really is one of my favorite times of year. We've been enjoying watching a couple of families of geese that live on the pond by our house, and we're waiting for the loon chicks to show up (they usually hatch in June). Oh, and I've got a kiddie pool full of tadpoles in the backyard. Now if only my lilac bushes would hurry up and bloom!

Angie and Firecracker said it perfectly re: your outfits. The new jeans are a fabulous addition.

Where I live, it is a gradual transition to cooler temps, with the odd hot day or cold stormy day thrown in the mix. I tend to need toppers in the morning and early evening, and not the rest of the time at the moment. Jackets and cardigans are currently useful and will be for the next 5 months. I am wearing the following combos: jeans, shirt, blazer and boots or alternatively a dress and topper.

Best of luck with the job search.

Sloper, great collection of socks & slides, even including a pair to match my shade, and the mole is too cute!

Angie, that’s it—our springtime weather! Summers can be cool here too, with the occasional short hot spell. Glad you like 14; I’ve had the cardi for years, have been too chicken to wear it, between the mesh & the pattern.

Firecracker, I’ve never been there, but rumor tells me this is the most Seattle sentence ever “I dressed around the rain jacket I wanted to wear”. Going to a coffee shop makes it even more Seattle, right? One of these days we’ll get over there. Sorry you were still chilly, even with all the layers. Thanks for all the compliments. I think the jeans, with their just-barely pattern, are going to be fun. I guess the blue outfit shows I’ve got a system with rules that work, even if I’m not feeling it.

Today was one of those strange transitional days here. Sunny, but cold, and it rained for about 5 out of the 15 minutes it took me to walk to a coffee shop to meet up with friends. I dressed around the rain jacket I wanted to wear, and I tried to have on enough layers for sitting outdoors under a roof to drink our coffee. I could have used another layer, despite the firepit and the coffee.

I like the outfit you ended up with on your unhappy-dressing day.

Spring in Germany and the Netherlands is much like Seattle - VERY changeable. Warm one day, and cold the next. Or cold in the morning and warmer in the afternoon. Your wardrobe needs to cover all versions of Spring! Warm layers and less warm layers. And personally, I like to stop wearing deep Winter clothes :)

Seattle has a long transitional season actually, so I wear a LOT of Spring stuff. It often works for our Summers because I run cold.

#9 is a cute photo!

I prefer the rolled hems of the shorts in #10 too. Good outfit.

The layered outfit in #14 is fabulous! Gorgeous fits, pattern mix and drape.

Cute pedal pushers in #17. A trendy nod to the '90s and '50s.

#23 is adorable! Baby swans...

That’s a good way to describe spring - transitions from day to day, within a day. Spring tortures me. I suppose I need to get out that spring coat of mine - a navy suede entirely for the purpose of a springtime midday dog walk. The suede makes it pretty warm and it’s not black or a sleeping bag, lol. But I’ll be back to the sleeping bag come the night dog walk.

You should have seen me yesterday. Not. That was a disaster of an outfit day and I didn’t care. It was just too difficult. Overcast morning, windy sunny afternoon, polar office, tropical production floor. My ‘fit was fleece camo leggings (baggy, they got to go), thin tee, crop lilac sweatshirt, puffy sweater-weight coat! Hahaha! And a black giant pocket Victoria Beckham mini skirt, for the pocket. Totally arrived to work and put on an XL chef’s jacket to cover up that mess! Hahahaha!

I like the shorts outfit best, good rolled or unrolled. And then the long red cardigan one.

I’ve adjusted my attitude a bit since Rachylou’s comment on Christina’s post reminded me that yes, spring is a thing here. It isn’t one big, gradual transition; it’s a bunch of transitions from one day to the next, and within the same day, with a lot of switchbacks. Here is how I’ve been coping:

2 is probably my unhappiest day dressing in a while. I wanted to wear my two-piece dress with my black fishnet bodysuit, but had to sub in solid navy tights because I couldn’t find it. Then layering the sweater over the dress meant you couldn’t see the top. Then that was still not warm enough & I had to wear the vest. They are all things I like, but *sigh*. This is not the look I was going for.

3-9 I got out the skirt I loved last fall, because it layers so well, and got busy with it. I decided against the tan sweater, even though I knew I was overdoing the berry softness, because my soul needed that much warmth. Later on I took off the sweater & leggings though and was just fine with the cream shirt. (The pink slides are my “house shoes”—not worn beyond our threshold, other than the occasional run to the dumpster). Besides all the pulling on & off of tops & toppers, I even had to pull the hood up for a few minutes of hard, cold rain. I was at a food stand, buying Russian blinni, so it seemed appropriate.

10-11 Transition to a lovely warm day! Only thing I had to decide was whether or not to roll the legs of the shorts up. Surprised what I chose?

12-15 Today is another day of layering/ transitions. We took all the pictures this evening when my son was home. He threw things to/at me to catch, so I wouldn’t just stand there in pictures. No, I wouldn’t wear the sports bra to run errands, but I did wear it to be a warm first layer, so it’s included in a collection of all the layers.

16-18 The pedal-pushers/crops pix are from the day Angie blogged about them. I enjoyed wearing them with the long red cardi, but looking at the print, I might also pull out my teal blouse that’s been looking for a mate and try it with them.

We are looking forward to ice cream and summer time, but also enjoying the transitions: seeing blooms come out and fade, the cygnets grow, and, because it’s Berlin, an upswing in protests; this one was for Italien anarchists and featured speed metal music.

Sorry such scattered finds: I’ve been keeping the computer for work only (job applications & academic research I hope will get me a job) and can’t make finds on the site on my phone.

If there is a big transitional season where you are, how are you dealing with it?

Thanks for looking & commenting.
