You are managing a difficult transition with elegance and grace, Carter. Brava! Love the color board and the shoes. Perhaps people will think you're wearing lower heeled shoes because you have lots of adventure planned and don't want to be slowed down for a minute!

I'm finding that I can do more with fewer items since shifting to a "wardrobe" mentality, rather than a "cute, cheap clothes that don't make me look big" mindset. You're already well on your way to a paired down fabness that will in no way make you feel (or look) deprived!

Aubergine, you should have seen how many Kate Spade shoes were originally in my cart! Thankfully, common sense prevailed, and I settled on just the two (for now). I also love the cream ones with the black tassels. I had to hunt those suckers down. No one had them in my size. Finally found them on nordstroms.com, but my regular size was tighter than the other color in the same style. Traded for a wider width, and they're perfect!

If I found out I had to replace all my shoes, I think I'd curl up in a corner and cry, then swing between chasing down every absurdly expensive brand that I think might work and giving up on ever wearing cute shoes again. Sorry, not very helpful there.

I think you've done a great job finding a new shoe wardrobe -- much better than I would have done! Everything looks so pretty and cohesive. I especially like the leopard ones and the cream ones with the black tassels.

Ooooh, Angie! I have my eye on a pastel blue Kate Spade bag for Spring/Summer (when there's much less red, some lighter pink, and lots of blues and turquoises in my wardrobe)! Maybe I should look for a pastel pink one now. I'd love to find a pale mint acccessory for Spring/Summer as well. Any ideas?

Suz, I'll be happy tto do a post on it, but you'll laugh when you see how easy it is! Give me a couple days. And believe me, I did have my own little pity party when I got the news from the podiatrist. Once I got past giving up shoes I love and the fact that I'll never be 5'8" (with 3" heels) again, it was kind of liberating ad fun to figure out what I really needed and go find it.

Echo, sorry to hear you'll soon be dealing with a similar issue. I've always been a duplicator when I find something that works for me. With these, I foundthere is very little choice out there that meets the doctor's criteria and mine. I tried on nearly every shoe at DSW in one marathon afternoon, then hit Macy's and Nordstrom's. Based on some internet research I hit Amazon looking for specific brands that might work. 25-30 pair later, I found these seven that got the doc's approval last week, and called it done. Hopefully I'll find other styles over the next several months, but at least I'm okay until then. One other thing i will add...if I had known that I was headed toward total loss of my joint, I would gladly have switched to granny shoes sooner to slow the progression. Take care of your feet!

Thank you, Claire! You are a smart woman! I made a self-directed partial shoe change over the last year and started transitioning from 3-4" heels to 2-2.5". Sadly, I didn't go far enough. I may not be able to wear the cutest shoes anymore, but I am enjoying the comfort--both for feet and back!

I don't think you could have done a better job with your challenge! Your result is incredible. :)

Over the last few years, I've gotten rid of shoes that my feet needed to grip as well. I never saw a doctor, I just knew I was in pain the day after walking a lot in them, and I thought, "Life is too short to wear shoes that hurt." Good for you for meeting the problem head and on and coming up with such a stylish solution.

YOur wardrobe is divine, and I love the pictures you have put together. My only concern would be that 3 out of 4 of your shoes are loafer style. If that works for you, then it is great; they are good looking shoes. But you might want to consider a flat oxford or a feminine shoe with straps to keep it on the foot.

Sadly, I need to take note of this post, as I have osteo arthritis beginning in my right big toe (and my fingers and one knee). As things stand, I am still able to wear most shoes, with the exception of a day here or there, but I know that won't last forever!

Carter, can you please do a post that gives us all lessons in how to put together this amazing collage?? It is brilliant! And --- um -- so is your wardrobe! I want to come play in your closet. You have some great items with a lovely "colour story" as you called it -- and the new footwear looks sensational.

I don't actually have a ton of footwear -- although compared to my pre-YLF days, when I literally had one pair of shoes, one pair of sandals, and one pair of boots, my closet it overflowing.

But if I had to replace it all immediately -- I would probably cry like crazy! I love my (currently unwearable due to the snow) booties.

I would be in serious trouble if I had to switch to flats. They don't stay on my feet. Like, NONE of them. Unless they have laces, that is. Talk about needing my toes to grip!! That is my life in any kind of pump or loafer, and all the more so in one that is flat.

So these recommendations MUST vary according to the type of foot a person has. At least I hope so. If they told me to get rid of my current shoes and switch to flats I would be limited to sneakers or oxfords.

MaryK, I should have added that I plopped all the pictures I selected into a powerpoint file so I could remove the background and size appropriately.

Thank you Debbie!

L'Abeille, a color board is generally pulled from a more all-encompassing mood board (pictures of anything and everything that appeal to your sense of style and color palate.) Generally the mood board and color story are done before the wardrobe, but in my case, I had to use the mood/colors of my current wardrobe. I did this in powerpoint as well, playing with proportions a bit. i then let those colors (and the vibe of the denim) guide what I should look for in shoes. This girl's gotta have pink shoes!

Thanks, MaryK. So pleased the queen of killer pumps approves of my granny shoes! For the wardrobe slide, I just pulled pics off websites. Some of my purchases were recent enough that I could pull my actual item. For others, I just got as close as I could. I was able to get very similar items on most of them. I'll admit that seeing it all one slide makes it feel like a much more cohesive wardrobe then I would have thought.
