Style Fan - where do you live? I'm the same with the golden mean. There was a wonderful store that closed here called Domain. https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod.....#038;psc=1 I'm very strongly visionary. I create shrines! I enjoyed this book very much. Like others have said, traditionally flattering will vary by preference and body type. It's what showcases your assets off best!! Yes, gotta love "Coltrane" good association!

Gryffin, your new jeans sound fabulous. I have heard some many good things about Madewell jeans. I wish they were available here. Hard to resist jeans called Coltrane! I have found that skinnies are not my traditionally flattering silhouette. I prefer boyfriend, girlfriend, mom or whatever else is out there!
My eye does seem to seek out the golden mean. I am always rearranging the decor of the places we rent.

Lisa - I think we used out terminology the same way. I tend to think of any significantly stretchy denim as a begging and they are usually calf sucking. I had previously not bought jeggings but as I wanted to tuck them into boots it made sense. I still don’t enjoy jeggings per se so I bought them a size up so they became very slim cigarettes. Skinnies have no stretch and are skimming like cigarettes with a close fitting ankle. Boyfriend skinnies are fitted in the rear but more ease in the thighs and calf with narrow ankle. Still skinny but relaxed. That’s how I categorize them and it helps me get the silhouettes I want. But yes the image in our minds eye is not necessarily the same.
Angie - I’m a huge fan of oversized and with the plethora of boyfriend styles my fitted clothes were less worn. I really forgot how good skinny jeans could feel. The question you ask is profound. The golden mean is everywhere in nature, architecture, fashion, art and of course in our perception of beauty. Although I believe almost everything has a beauty of its own, there is an absolute mathematical harmony in certain proportions. And these are the proportions that most of us would off handedly call traditionally flattering. So I do think it’s a nature and nurture. But I also agree beauty is everywhere. It’s just a different type. That’s the best part ever!!

Gryffin, I wonder if it's the change of silhouette you crave more than traditionally flattering silhouettes?

These items look perfect for you, and yes - Madewell jeans ROCK. Those Berkleys are winners on many clients.

As for traditionally flattering proportions and how good they look - there is definitely something to it. We've either been brainwashed to believe that traditionally flattering proportions are the classic bench mark for style - or it's actually true. I don't know anymore!

The best thing about today's fashion is that we don't need to wear traditionally flattering proportions to look stylish, feel fabulous, and be the best version of ourselves. WE HAVE A CHOICE, and that's empowering.

The thing with what we call "skinnies" is that it means different things to different people. The range of fits and looks is wide, and it's always so evident when someone refers to them as being "calf sucking". To me, that's a jegging /very fitted leg, which is a whole different look than a non-stretch denim very slim leg jean with a narrow hem opening ( a true skinny in my books ).

suntiger - unfrumped did make a crucial point. Some of have a very distinct predilictation for a particular style, which is not always easily available. When it returns to fashion, we need to stock up more than people who are comforable in a variety of silhouettes or prefer to embrace trends as they come along. It's such a personal choice!!
kkards - that's such a crucial point. Being uncomfortable in something is NEVER in style!! I look good in jewel tones, but I choose not to wear them. I don't embrace color. It's too unweildy and I'm comfortable and feel super good in neutrals. As Coco Chanel said, "Elegance is refusal." We need to be ourselves and wear what feels good to us to be able to delight and then forget about what we have on!
karen - I'm wearing an old pair of Lucky Brand Lola skinnies two sizes up. They are cotton, no stretch, and I bought them way sized up because I wanted to slouchy boyfriend skinnies and they are very roomy in the calves, more like cigarette jeans but even roomier calves. Still a relaxed skinny silhouette so it's elongating but no calf suck. I don't usually wear calf sucking anything - even the madewell are a size up for the calves skim they no not cling. Only in leggings do i go fitted but that's a different look. I wish you could try on the Lucky's or similar just to see what you think. But it's all about what feels flattering and good to you! And yay bootcuts!! Mine were never out, but they've gotten less wear but always waiting, taking a little snooze, till it was their "time" again!!

Ditto everything Suz said.....
for me personally, while i'm often told dresses and skirts are flattering, i generally feel uncomfortable in them, so, i pull and twist and generally fuss, which IMO makes the outfit unflattering....

and what is Traditionally flattering, is also subjective and changes over time...

Looks like some good additions, and who can argue with mile long legs Agreeing w Suz about conventionally flattering being body type dependent! Im all about traditionally flattering, and would rather look the best i can than to be jfe-even if jfe is the more fashion forward choice. But agreeing with unfrumped, sometimes the most flattering choices are just not available. Luckily Angie is here to explain it all!

Sal - know thyself! I agree there is nothing better than a great dress. It’s one stop shopping. And so jealous you find them easily. Kudos!!! I wear short dresses with leggings and a blazer to work. But it has to be the right dress and they are fussy to find. It’s partially a footwear thing. Rate heavy booties to me eye need the weight of leggings underneath. It’s a proportion thing. If you favor refined footwear you have a broader selection which is awesome.
Firecracker - those Hoxton jeans look
Great. I regretted not trying them on. The wedgie jeans look terrific. I can’t wear higher then a 9” rise. I’d look like urkell But for the lucky ladies like you with he right proportions I bet they are wonderful!!
Kate - it sounds like you have a number of silhouettes in your wardrobe which is fantastic. I agree the key to volume is control and balance. Sounds like you have a great eye for both!
Unfrumped - that’s exactly the problem. My best proportions are not always available. Right now is feast time with long blazers. I agree it took me time to figure out ankle pants. But I love high shaft booties. They close the gap, extend the leg line so I can wear them all year round. And don’t get me started on the coach drifter. I am completely obsessed with this bag!!

I echo what Suz said, and that as trends ebb and flow, one’s own “ best fits” may be more Ir less available.
Skinnies aren’t for me but I also have been going for a bit more “ tailored “ look and also wearing my favorite proportions with tops and bottoms.

I adapted to ankle pants and found styles that worked and ways for them to make outfits look more updated for me, since it was “ ankles, ankles, everywhere “ but it takes a lot of attention to footwear and proportions to not be chopped up, and then may be unusable in cool weather ; so LONGER pants are more “ traditionally flattering” for me, as would be bootcuts of some sorts.
I think as Angie says, we’re at a lucky fashion point where all of these styles are showing up in some combination or another.

Skinnies are my mainstay as well. Nine times out of 10 I’ll go with traditionally flattering on my bottom half, since that’s by far the easiest part of my body to dress. My wide shoulders, bony chest, and long torso make the upper half a lot tougher. On top, I’m apt to be a lot more adventurous in silhouette, using drape, volume and avant garde shapes.

If I do opt for a JFE silhouette on bottom, usually something with a good bit of volume, I’ll rein things in on top with a slim sweater. Usually. But not always! Sometimes you just gotta go for broke!

That sounds like a great outfit Gryffin, and I agree perfectly fitting jeans are a wonderful thing....I like the sound of the grey denim and a good addition to your black pieces.

For me, the most flattering looks are usually dresses, fitted or tailored, showing off my shape and with some skin at the neckline.... That seems to be what works the most easily. I like skinny jeans and can make them work, but the proportions and shape are much trickier than a dress.

Gigi - thank you. Straightbcrops are great. I actually love the best in cooler weather w a great bootie. Ah the rectangles dream!! Having a waist to define!! Show it off girl!! Enjoy it!!
Suz - That’s a super point that you and Gigi made that for each of us traditionally flattering will vary based on body type. I never highlight my waist, the way Gigi can, because as a rectangle, although it’s defined, I wish it were smaller. So I tend to emphasize legs and overall balanced proportions. A gorgeous hourglass is going to showcase the waist and curves. But it’s all to reveal, not conceal whatever we think are our best assets! When I think of your outfits you are adept at highlighting the elegance of line, slender, graceful and elegant!!

I love those jeans and I’m not surprised they look great on you with all those other pieces. You know your own essentials so well and pick them with such care!

I was thinking that what is traditionally flattering on one is not he same as what works on another. All depends on body shape and proportions. I think I am more flattered by slim tapered jeans/ slim girlfriends with a high waist than by skinnies. But I still like skinnies and wear them. For those with slim long legs skinnies are the best thing ever.

Yes, I am still very attracted to traditionally flattering silhouettes. I have been looking to refresh my jeans capsule, and although I did buy one pair of straight crops, the other styles I'm looking at are skinnies. I'm also being careful not to get too voluminous on top and to define my waist for structure. My style has always had a heavy dose of traditionally flattering silhouettes.

We can order Madewell but it’s not sold in B/M stores here - unless it’s at Nordstrom here in Canada ? This style is priced at close to $200 here - which works for many , but not for me I’ll spend the big $ on other things like blazers and boots and bags and such .

Lisa - IKWYM I worry about that dye transfer w cotton which limits what tops I am willing to chance. The beauty of the madewell stretch denim is it has none of that. Do they carry madewell in Canada? I’d be interested for you to try them on and tell me what you think. I had been wearing my lucky Lola boyfriend skinnies bought well sized up but I had forgotten how good it feels to wear skinny jeans. Glad you are rocking yours!!
Bijou- that’s because you rock tailored looks!! You have a great figure and your clothes show the elegant line to great advantage. My dress clothes are usually more fitted but I love and easy tunic, leggings and blazer for work. But I am really enjoying the new jeans.
Rachy- you are wise and do not stray too far from what suits you perfectly!!
Shevia - exactly. It’s all about balance. Volume is great. But sometimes you just crave structure.

I do know what you mean. When I pile on the wide legs and the wide tops I look like a whole other person than the next day when I wear my default slim cut jeans. My bottom half is where I can have structure, particulalry in winter when my arms are fully covered, and I do want that at least some of the time.

I always seem to come back to traditionally flattering silhouettes. JFE is definitely something that I am happy to wear from time to time, but I always feel my best in structured and tailored clothing.

I'll take the whole lot, thankyouverymuch. I have always loved skinnies, and continue to wear them, as I do find them flattering (on me) and don't wear them skin tight. Once in awhile , I can semi-tuck into the jeans, but you are reminding me I really could use a statement belt. But traditionally flattering? Yeah, I admit I try for that look most of the time (and when I miss it's because I don't see the "mistake") . I'll admit though to not loving black jeans (too many bad experiences with lint attraction and dye transfer issues) . I did have a pair of that striated grey look you mention above, and the denim was beautifully thin and with a cool hand/feel. I think they were the Current Elliot Stiletto jean - gone from my wardrobe now though....

I've been off skinnies for quite some time. I've been crushing on boyfriend and girlfriend jeans and chinos, oversized sweaters, volume over leggings. We talk about JFE, but I had actually forgotten how good traditionally flattering feels. I purchased the Madwell 9" high waist skinnies in berkley because I really wanted jeans to tuck into boots and even though I don't usually wear jeans with stretch, or anything remotely jeggings like, I love them! I size up so that with wear they fit like cigarette jeans, skimming but not skin tight. I liked them so much I bought the Madewell 9" skinnies in coltrane - a fantastic clear gray with almost a striate weave that gives dimension and life to the fabric. I paired them with my new Frye Shane tipped booties, embellished belt, Everlane $100 crew neck cashmere sweater (the winter tee shirt of choice) and my trusty Theory Urban Salata Blazer. Covered it all with the best ever toss over coat - the Everlane Cocoon coat. Of course, the Coach drifter mixed media crossbody bag. I had actually forgotten how good it feels to wear traditionaly flattering silhouettes. I have long legs to start with but the jeans makes them miles long. So I am feeling a sea change coming on! I will still be wearing my beloved oversized pieces and girlfriend jeans, but the Madewell jeans are definitely my best winter refresh especially when paired with my new frye booties. Is anyone else crushing on traditionally flattering silhouettes?
