Sabimct, I agree -- when you track, you tend to "see" more of your closet and think about new combinations. So that on its own is useful.

Well, I am only on Day 2 of tracking and can already see a very positive benefit of this habit:

I am far more inclined to reach for something "new" from my closet - just so I can track it!

I can already tell that this will be a illuminating and useful exercise. Thanks to all who chimed in with suggestions and links.

January 1, 2025 - I begin tracking!

I'm excited to begin this endeavour and I want to thank all the YLF forum members [especially @suz] for sharing their systems, what worked, advice and encouragement!

Happy new year to all!

Regarding tracking, I tried Style Book and it was too cumbersome. I tried making a spreadsheet which was easier to set up however, the follow through required the extra step of turning on the computer. I tried using a legal note pad stored in my closet, onto which I wrote what I wore and then at the end of the week made a master tally in separate hand written log. That worked best for me. I no longer track wears as the entire process, while interesting, was still more time consuming than I preferred and I decided to use the time elsewhere.

I've been tracking my wardrobe ever since I joined YLF years ago. I use an excel spreadsheet a YLFer gave me a long time ago.

I've found it helpful to see what I own, what I spent, when I bought it, and how often I wear it (or don't wear it).

Tracking has shown me that I can spend more money on jeans, footwear, and when I used to live in a colder climate sweaters, and I'll wear them often enough that I can get the CPW very low before passing an item on.

I've also found tracking helpful when I want to purge my wardrobe. I try to do 1 in and 1 out, but sometimes I forget to do it or just get busy and then I have to schedule a catch up session to readjust the size of my wardrobe.

For those longer closet cleanout sessions, looking at how long I've owned something and how much I've worn it helps me sometimes identify what to get rid of, and it's helped me overcome any buyers remorse. When I see that I really have worn something that's still in good condition a lot, purging it is just easier to do!

It's also helped me pinpoint poor quality. When a $8.00 tee shirt is only worn a couple of times and then purged because of quality yet a $30 tee shirt is worn 30 times and actually at a CPW lower than a cheap tee shirt, it makes buying more expensive basics easier to do too.

Very helpful thread, even if I don't track my wears and don't have any such plans. Perhaps I should reconsider .

Roberta, that's a great system! I think LJP used a similar method for a while to evaluate her closet or simply to try a capsule wardrobe approach.

Dee, that's an excellent variation -- and ha! I now realize that is what I did, too. And that I tracked from December to March and then separately March through May!

It works for those of us who have most of our closet in Finds. For those who need help in setting that up, here are some instructions.

I think I'm going to try your method of using Finds Suz. I have most of my current wardrobe that I've custom made and entered into Finds.

My plan is to create a separate winter tracking collection in Finds and as I wear an item, I will add it to the collection and then use the notes section and add
an "X" as I wear it. Hopefully, it will give me a more accurate picture of how many times my items are really getting worn, although I think I have a pretty good idea of what I wear the most of already.

I described my "Lazy Tracking" system last year, and I'm going to do this again beginning on January 2nd. I will put up my foldable clothing rail in my guest room and hang up everything I wear for a month or so. I'll wear whatever I feel like - I want to discover what I reach for first and maybe discern why that is. (This is for my cold weather wardrobe.) Last time I didn't bother with shoes, but I think I will this year. I suspect I wear the same four pairs over and over again!

This clears out my closet so I can see the less popular items in my wardrobe. Even if I don't get rid of them, I'll have a sense of how many there are. I don't want a third of my closet to be things I'm not in love with.

So as not to derail Suntiger's thread, I'm starting a new one here. On that thread, JenniNZ and Star already explained their systems; other tracking systems can be found (or rigged up) via various apps or in spreadsheet format, and different forum members have done that. Here's a thread from Staysfit about her experience tracking.

I've done the simple Notes feature on my computer (analogous to paper and pencil), and I've also tracked via the FINDS feature on this site. Most of my wardrobe is in Finds, and the last time I tracked I just put a little mark in tne notes area of Finds each time I wore an item. It took a little longer but it was really interesting to see the visuals along with the check marks! I kept it up for a winter season. I've done longer tracking periods -- one year, half a year -- in the past. It's always instructive somehow or other! And it usually prompts me to create new outfits from my own closet.

Like Bonnie, I quickly learned that I can spend more on footwear and trousers because I wear them a lot. However, unlike her, I find they wear out faster for me than tops do, on the whole. Keep in mind, I do not live in a very hot climate, which I'm sure would affect this. Also, I have relatively more tops than bottoms so rotate through them more slowly.

I was really surprised last time I tracked with how many wears a pair of indoor shoes got! It was shocking! I had hesitated over buying them because I thought, oh well, what does it matter, really -- but I found I preferred wearing the indoor shoe to my clogs (which function for me like slippers) and I quickly got up to 90 wears in one season!
