The bee balm and butterfly bush are perennials that will spread and can take up some space, but can be pruned back.

The red salvia (picture below) is very pretty and perfect for a pot or container garden. Depending on your zone it can be an annual or a perennial, but it doesn't grow very large.

What state are you in?

I agree bee balm (melissa) is a great hummer attracter! When we grew it it got pretty tall, but did not bush out a lot at all. More of a vertical plant. I wish we had more hummers around my area. They are fascinating!

Biscuitsmom, it really helps if you also have a few flowering plants around that they love. In my garden they love catching insects and sipping nectar from bee balm, red salvia and my butterfly bush.

Once they know you have a feeder, the hummingbirds that do their nesting in the neighborhood should keep coming back often, all day long.

How sweet! I love feeding birds...we get about 100 per day (mostly sparrows, a few cardinals and blue jays) and a lot of squirrels! Including 2 beautiful albinos Only 1 hummingbird sighting though Im planning to put up a couple of their feeders this spring, in hopes of seeing more...

... before I can put back out the hummingbird feeders!

The beginning of April is when we usually start to see their migration back up north in my area. It is one of my biggest gardening delights and a thread of joy throughout my days for the next 6 months or so.

All this talk of spring colors and style has me daydreaming...
