I grew up in a modern house with HUGE windows. We'd make our own bird of prey cutouts and tape them to the windows in the spring. It's not hard : just go to a website that shows the decals, like this one http://www.duncraft.com/Birds-.....806C0.aspx

Draw a bird of prey outline just like the one shown on the webiste on some cardboard (try to make the wing-span about 10 inches across: a tiny bird of pray won't scare the bird!) - do the outline in pencil so you can erase it until it looks right to your eye. Cut it out, use it as the template for cutting out any additional ones you need for other windows. Tape 'em up and voila, you're done!

Julie - That is hilarious!

RIght now I'm liking the hose idea the best but I'm going to try to stop by an outdoor store and see if I can get some of those decoys for cheap. Strangely he has not graced us with his presence today. I've heard of birds doing this for an hour but never knew they could be so persistent. Wouldn't he have an insane headache by now if nothing else?

Thank you for all the tips - I will let you know what (if anything) works!

Oh boy I hope coverring the outside of the window solves the problem. What strong instinct the bird has.

LOL, I initially thought you had a member of the Catholic Church tapping on your window. My friends has this problem due to the reflection of trees in her window she has not yet found a solution.

We used to have that problem wit robins! and after doing some research it is just like Isabel said: they see their reflection and feel a threat and are trying to protect their nests. Do some research on line and you are sure to find several recommendations!

HA! I am so happy that someone else has this dilemma!!! We have multiple cardinals that run into our kitchen sliding glass door all spring and summer long, and it drives us crazy!

My husband knows much about birds. He says that the bird sees his/her reflection in the mirror and the window and it thinks it is another bird so it is attacking it. DH says this happens in the spring
when birds have nests nearby. Apparently they get very aggressive protecting their young. That would explain why you cannot scare it away.
It is probably protecting it's nest which is nearby. DH said to cover the window from the outside so that there is no reflection. This window is probably the closest to it's nest.

Good luck and let us know how this works.

That is a good idea Louise! I wish I could know what he thinks he is doing. I don't know what he wants but I guess that is not important. I'll look at the store for stickers, or maybe even a big fake owl or something! I could probably rig it up to hang several stuffed animals in the window too. crazy bird.

He is also a master of being elusive, so I don't think the hose would work but I might have to try it! When we go outside he disappears. However, the other day I saw him fight another bird for coming into his 'territory' by clawing it and rolling it under my car. I think he is a touch crazed from all the window hitting.

I remember my ornithology professor in college saying the way to get rid of woodpeckers and flickers was to spray them with a waterjet from the hose. Maybe you could try that. Though it wouls take the right timing and a good aim.

Honestly, it may be even longer. It is the strangest thing. He goes from sitting on my driver side mirror of my car and pecking relentlessly at the mirror (and subsequently going to the bathroom all over my door too - yuck!) to literally flying AT the window of our laundry room ALL day long. Day in and day out for at least a month. Dawn till dusk. I've tried putting white blankets up in the window, covering the mirror of my car, parking in a different spot of the driveway, jumping up and down at the window and startling him, leaving the lights on in the laundry room and so on. I've looked up what to do on websites and most of them say put a blanket or something white up in the window so they can see they don't see their reflection.

Anyways, nothing is working! I know this is horribly off topic and a long shot, but with all the global wisdom on here is there anything I can do to get his bird to leave?

Many thanks!
