We're going this weekend, leaving on Friday and coming back Monday! Any suggestions for where a 40 year old can shake some tail to 80's new wave or throw back hip hop? Would love to hear your thoughts! THIS IS MY FIRST TRIP AWAY FROM MY KIDS SINCE THEY WERE BORN EIGHT YEARS AGO.

This is a wildcard and not on your list of activities but I love the Hockey Hall of Fame. We saw a young couple showing their infant the Stanley Cup when we were there. Sort of a "Canadian Tire moment".

Haven't been to Toronto in awhile but hubs goes all the time on business so I'll pick his brain later as I know he gets to eat/drink in some fine places.

Oh my gosh!! L'Abeille - when was that? I lived there in the mid 80s.

I think Jamie Kennedy might have the bistro, yes. Haven't been.

Rita -- another really fun area is "Leslieville" on Queen East. Fun shops and restaurants. And this amazing consignment store that specializes in smaller sizes: Thrill of the Find. I have made some terrific purchases there.

Hijacking--Suz, you used to live on Baldwin? I used to live on Henry Street around the corner! DH proposed on a sidewalk bench opposite the frozen yogurt shop on Baldwin! Memories!

I'd add in my suggestions but it would be a walk down memory lane, so much has changed since I lived there.

But--does Jamie Kennedy still have his little bistro? I used to follow his career (he was a celebrity chef before celebrity chefs) when I had kids/job/no time to eat out ever. But on a recent trip to Toronto we found his newish bistro, downsized so he is the one doing all the cooking. He even came to the table to check on our meal--it was such a treat.

A map: https://maps.google.ca/maps?cl.....practic,+2

For driving, they suggest going up St. George. But so much more interesting and fun to walk up Beverly Street (take a short side trip along Baldwin, where I used to live) and then to wend your way up to College, and from there through the campus (you can see the green spaces there -- head slowly toward Harbord/ Hoskin). On Hoskin hear east (you will pass Trinity College, where I was enrolled) and then north on Avenue Road to Bloor. From there, continue east along Bloor to Holt's and then go back into Yorkville (behind Holts) -- Yorkville Ave, Scollard Street, etc.

If the weather were more fine you could sit in the courtyard garden of a place stopped in time -- the Coffee Mill.

Try to get to the Distillery District, it has a great historical/industrial vibe and there are often events going on over the weekends. There are great galleries, shops and restaurants, all closed off to traffic. http://www.thedistillerydistrict.com/

Another fun area is the Evergreen Brick Works, interesting food and crafts and very ecology minded. http://ebw.evergreen.ca/

Hopefully you'll have good weather, it's starting to cool off here!

Suz and Carla! Thanks so much for your suggestions! I was in Toronto once before and I remember there was no shortage of funky shops and food options. I can't wait!

Seconding Suz's suggestions re: Bloor and Yorkville (and make sure you trawl the streets and mews behind Holt Renfrew! Have lunch in one of the cafés and make sure you get a window seat so you can watch the street scene ( people and cars! The high end drive by is a gas!). If you like Italian, 'Bellini's' 101 Yorkville is a personal fave. Though they are an Italian resto (I always get risotto) DH claims his steak there was one of the best he's ever had.

Do not miss Queen St. Either, for the funky shops. I got size 13 shoes (2 pairs) for youngest son at a wild store, that doled out a drink with every purchase! It was the am, so we only took water, but another customer had a coffee and the SA added a shot of Baileys! I would recommend 'The queen Mother Cafe' for good eats. It's an institution in the neighbourhood.

If you are a thrifter or like boho, a walk through Kensington is a must. DS # 2 found his ligit navy peacoat at a second hand shop in that area. It is certainly couloir flu and eclectic.

Sorry I can't help you with a dance or club, but there IS an amazing jazz club on Queen street where they get started pretty early in the am, and go long into the wee small hours!

Some more ideas: Near the gallery -- west through Chinatown and into Kensington Market.

The Distillery district (go east on the King car). Great theatre (Soulpepper) and a few fun and funky places to eat -- everything from pubs (with microbrewery beer) to fun Mexican to higher end. We ate recently at the brewery and at a fish place -- both were good. There are small art galleries tucked in along here. And a huge Fluevog store. It looks like there's a big cabaret thing going on when you are there: http://www.globalcabaret.ca which could be a lot of fun!

Just for starters, the restaurant at the gallery (Frank) is really nice and really good. Not cheap, but good. The gallery is situated in the midst of the old Chinatown. These days most of the Chinese have moved to the 'burbs but there are still quite a lot of businesses and a lively street scene in the area. I used to live just a couple of blocks to the north back in Bowie's heyday!

If the weather's nice it would be fun to walk (if you are up for it) from the gallery up through the University of Toronto campus and from there to Bloor and Yorkville -- all the higher end stores are up there -- check out Holt Renfrew and the boutiques and smaller galleries in Yorkville. This is about a half hour to 45 minute walk (depending on your speed.) You could have drinks at the Four Seasons. You'd be moving through several distinct neighbourhoods and getting a little taste of them all.

You will be staying in the entertainment district. There is tons of shopping along Queen West. Used to be a very funky arty area but has become more box stores; there's still some interesting stuff if you continue west towards Bathurst. Also on King West. All the boutique hotels around there are pretty cool and most have bars. The Thompson is one. The Ritz Carleton on Wellington is pretty spiffy. There's also the Drake.

Toronto's truly a city of neighbourhoods. You can pick a neighbourhood that you want to explore, get there by transit, and have a grand time just checking out whatever there is to offer. Little Italy over on College West is a great place to spend some time.

Avoid Yonge Street as much as possible. It is like a pathetic anemic imitation of Times Square but nowhere near as fun.

I will pop back in with more ideas once I collect my thoughts.

Hi all! We're going to Toronto for a long weekend to see the Bowie retrospective at AGO. My husband LOVES Bowie. I am more interested in him as a fashion and art icon. We're both super excited about the trip. We are getting away together without the kids for the first time EVER!!

We will be staying at the Beverly Hotel downtown. Any suggestions for restaraunts, brunch, coffee, shopping, sophisticated evening drinks, possibly some place where a 40 year old could shake some tail to good 80's music??
