Aaaargh, I'm so sorry to hear this. I know many people who have had a torn ACL. All of them have had it fixed with surgery. People tell me that the recovery is super painful (sorry) but it's worth it.

I can't imagine they will tell you that you can't get surgery if you want it. You might just have to wait quite a while. My father-in-law actually paid for surgery himself to avoid the wait time.

That's an insane wait time and an absurd thought that because you're over 50 you may not be allowed to have surgery. Come to Atlanta. I have a guest room for you. Seriously.

I have torn my ACL and had it repaired with surgery. I'm in the US, though. Some wait time before surgery makes sense --- the swelling needs to go down first. But 180 days is long, I waited about 6 weeks. On crutches for some of that time.

Honestly it can be a hard surgery and a hard recovery. I agree with your physio that for some people it is not necessary. I also agree with Lisa-- even without a repair, over time you may be able to participate in most activities, maybe with some accommodation (lower impact, a brace, committed strengthening/maintenance routine). If it happened to me again I would be tempted to not do the surgery. But that's just me and my life.

Let us know what you end up doing and take care.

Oh do I ever . My daughter, almost 20 , just tore her ACL in a basketball game 10 days ago. Partial tear, I think, as it was too swollen for X-rays to determine the degree of the tear. She is waiting for an MRI _ which I hope happens soon. Surgical wait times at the hospital in Wpg is also a bit long, but if you are willing to travel outside your area (we have access to a surgical hospital in a town about 90 minutes away which can perform the surgery within a week) you might be seen much faster. DD saw sports med doctor the next day - after being taken to the hospital in an ambulance - who prescribed physio and a knee brace- and I am taking her to a sports massage therapist who is also working wonders on her sore hips and back.

You can get the surgery in the US too - not sure where you live, but our closest good place for this is Minneapolis- and you can get in right away.

Advice? The sports massage guy we see (Who we all have gone to for a few years ) says the sooner you can move around without the knee brace the better for your leg. And from what i've been told, surgery isn't always necessary, even with a full tear. You'll just have to wear your brace when participating in sports, and have to avoid those that put undue stress on the knee. I know of a friend who tore hers at your age, and she was fine after awhile . Just takes time . Good luck - and I know how horrible it is to have to manage with crutches and a knee brace - everything is that much harder. Hang in there.

Wondering if anyone has experience with treatment around torn ACLs. I have a through and through tear. I am doing physio and waiting for an appointment to see an Ortho. Since I am in Canada this will take some time. The referral was made 4 weeks ago and I do not have an appointment yet. Surgical wait times for ACL repair where I live is 180 days.
There is some question on whether I will even be offered surgery. Over 50 years old seems to be a toss up according to my physio. Also I have read it isn't always necessary. However, I would have to give up all pivot sports: skating, running, dance.
Does anyone have experience with this? Any advice to offer?
