What Marlene said. Cute shoes are important, too, and add a lot to an outfit. Don't wear athletic sneakers when you go out, but some nice fashion sneakers, flats or flat boots. It makes a big difference.

Great suggestions! I love the ideas, thanks! Fitted jeans would probably help a lot (mine tend to be a bit baggy...the comfort factor).

I am a SAHM too. My regular "outings" are like yours, I am assuming : grocery store, bus stop, going to the school, maybe a playdate. Everything needs to be washable.

I really like ponte knit pants ( didn't know what they were called until I saw them on this site ) I have these from JJill - they are like sweats only better :

http://www.jjill.com/jjillonli.....0&y=0

I also Really like sports gear, my favorite site is Athleta.com ( also titlenine )

http://athleta.gap.com/browse/.....?cid=53610

http://athleta.gap.com/browse/.....pid=739129

these pants are made for working yet look great with almost any shoe, blazer, top.

This part of the wardrobe is where I am currently focusing my attention. It is that gray area in between "gear" or lounge-wear and smartcasual/MOTG outfits. Although I am "just" here at home, I still interact with lots of people...people come to the door, I see neighbors when I am out front, I walk over to the school to pick up my daughter. Up until a few weeks ago, this part of my wardrobe was a weird combo of ill-fitting or too short pants/jeans and baggy t-shirts. I felt just awful about myself. But now I am really trying to smarten up this dead zone in my closet.

I now have some good fitting jeans that are PPL. These are not premium denim...just the straight leg levis I picked up at kohls. I also have some cords. I have a base layer of long-sleeved plain t-shirts that I got at target. They are cheap and I just toss them in the wash since they get pretty messy over the course of the day. But they fit nicely on me and seem to hold up to the trauma they must face on a daily basis. At this point I will layer depending on what the weather is like and what I need to do: cardigan boyfriend sweater, hoodie, denim jacket, etc. I even picked up some fleece pull-overs from Lands End...they have a new "modern fit" which is not as straight and baggy as in days past...that are perfect for hanging around the house but still look decent when someone drops by unexpectedly.

What I am liking about this uniform is that when I need to head out in public, I can swoop a scarf around my neck, pull on my boots, toss on the denim jacket or trench and I look pretty pulled-together at a moment's notice. I also make sure I comb my hair and put on my make-up...even on at-home days...so that I know I always look groomed and don't have to think about it too often during the day.

On days when I plan an out-and-about day (dr appts, errands, teaching class, coffee with friends etc) then I also have my MOTG uniforms which I consider a notch up on the formal-ness scale.

But seriously, getting the uber-casual zone of my wardrobe sorted out has gone a long way in helping me feel stylish and still functional in an area where I spend a large portion of my time each week.

Fitted tees, graphic tees, cowl-neck tops, banded tops, fine-gauge knit tops (like lightweight sweaters), tops with a fun detail like ruffles or rosettes ... all are good for staying home because they are washable. I also like cashmere pullover sweaters of various necklines for a first layer in the winter. Put on a fun pair of shoes (fashion sneakers, Converse, boots, ballet flats, strappy sandals) and a necklace or scarf. I have found that I have to remove a scarf for cooking though! Then when you need to go out, put on a nicer cardi or jacket and just adding that layer makes the outfit more pulled-together.

I just got some cowl neck sweaters that are loose fitting and perfect with jeans, they are easy to throw on and look great with casual wear. I throw on a long necklace and I am ready to go out in style. Sweet pea tops are a great suggestion although they are a bit
delicate for all my chores at home.

Well, just because you are a stay at home mom, don't resort to "lounge wear". You need to look at Angie's Mom on the Go posts- which are more appropriate for errands, outings with the kids, etc. As far as comfortable tops to wear with jeans- check out Sweet Pea by Stacy Frati (available at Nordstroms and on ebay).

I'm a SAHM, and I feel sooooo dumpy when I dress for a "day at home" (which sometimes involves a quick trip to the store, so I actually do make an appearance in public).

I read Angie's loungewear post, but I mostly wear jeans when I'm at home (I find the pockets practical, and Hubby dislikes me in sweats or lounge pants). Usually I pair these with t-shirts (long or short sleeve, depending on the season). But are there any other options for comfortable lounge shirts that go with jeans?

Thanks for the suggestions!
