Honestly I love that leopard and denim combination so much, and it is so YOU! I have those pieces, and I screen shot the combo. I need a bigger brooch! I have smaller ones - you know, from the 80's or 90's! - and I suppose I could cluster them, but now I want to go thrifting for a big statement piece! Thanks for the inspo!

I have a difficult time with these temps too. I wear vests and have 3 or 4 of them. I find them useful in the winter too in the super cold temps as an extra layer. I've lost a couple and replaced one, but have to replace the navy. I have vests in plaid, silver, black and burgandy. They are thin, have pockets and easy to throw in a bag if it gets too warm, but that doesn't happen often because my arms are not covered. These colours coordinate with most of my casual wardrobe and along with a cute scarf, seem to do the trick!

It seems to me that shorter jackets are trending. I like to browse Nordstrom and everything is cropped.

My favorite lighter weight jacket is a utility jacket. I love the length. I have several, including a Kuhl charcoal one from Poshmark that has a quilted lining. The unlined ones work with a light insulated vest. I think Patagonia Nanopuff vests are kind of sleek, not boxy. I do take them on our biding trips, but they’re nice for everyday, too. I’ve even started wearing them as part of my dressy outfit. My version of dressy includes jeans, of course.

I also have a shorter linen jacket from Macy’s that seems dressier than a jean jacket. Mine is navy, not white, but it was great on our trip to Arkansas last summer where the AC was ferocious.

This time of year is sooo hard to dress for!
I put away my very heavy puffer, wool coat, and black leather jacket for the season a couple weeks ago.

Still out are thin black puffer, longer black trench, new olive hooded raincoat, PC sweater coat, burgundy velour hoodie, bronze jean style jacket, black blazer, black cardigan, and new black Tek vest. I've been low key hunting a lighter color topper of some sort, since all but the new olive one are so dark.
Re: cool summer nights- not a thing here. It's usually still 80+ at night in summer.

I'd think your jean jacket and tan puffer would be perfect for this time of year, but I understand about the shapes.

Carla, was that your Zara bomber, that we twinned with? Mine is still going strong but I don’t wear it frequently (I love it when I do though!). What a great jacket that was! Something with that vibe could be fun again. Yesterday was chilly here but I wore my big reversible bomber that I got in Paris two years ago (from a small pop-up that makes the jackets from old kimonos and remnants).

Confession: I may have picked up this cute one yesterday at Anthro while I was out killing time waiting for an appointment. I need to do a jacket edit because I’m not wearing some of my old ones. This is a nice update in silhouette, and the navy looks really good with denim.

Chanel 'Lady Jackets' are having a moment. I have one similar (not Chanel mind you :)) and may just 'dust if off'! Your cropped linen jacket is perfect. It is quite neutral to my eye. I think I have admired it before...

I have a bomber and find it a bit too masculine with the masculine jeans I tend to wear. I will hang onto it but would not buy another.

I like your denim jacket styling! I have been seeing more denim jackets lately - I feel they are coming back around, not that they ever left. Most of our winter probably qualifies as light topper season. I like to be warm so do wear a light puffer a lot, but also blazers and leather jackets. I have a bomber from Alo that actually is very useful in toning down a more formal look. The barn jacket thing was too much too fast for me, but if I see one I like at the thrift store one day I would consider it.

I used to have a silky bomber jacket with beautiful embroidery of birds and flowers on the back. I wore it so much that eventually the fabric failed at the elbows (I’m a leaner!) The sporty silouhette suits my style.

Good idea/suggestion!

I should’ve paid more attention to your question - for the summer nights I like to wear a cardigan. I also have a couple of blazers from my office days and a linen bomber. I also like knitted zip up jackets. If I had a regular fit denim jacket, I would remove the belt part (don’t know the proper name for that bottom piece) and wear it cropped with the raw edge. If you are looking to purchase new, I suggest Uniqlo bombers.

I like the idea of photo 1 for you too.

I struggle always with these toppers and have had more fails in this wardrobe area than others. I seem to need more than I think given the limited wear they get.

Mine are below but I note the cream linen has been very lightly worn this spring/summer/autumn - maybe once. The cream soft jacket also got one wear in total. But I am keeping them both - they don't wear out.

I like the satin bomber but I am looking for something similar but different in a lighter colour. I loved my gold/caramel bomber. Maybe something patterned.

If I win the lottery, I'm buying that first Ganni leopard number. Seriously. It's actually in stock in a store right down the street waiting for me.

Carla - I agree with the comment above suggesting a bomber style looking fresh again. In a slouchy, oversize fit, you get the modern volume without boxiness. Plus a bomber works well worn indoors too.

Ive also been thinking about transitional spring-ish jackets as I feel a bit uninspired with my current jackets. I just went for a walk and my short uniqlo puffer was a bit too warm by the end.

For my daily commute I always seem to fall back on my basic northface raincoat--since rain always seems to be a possibility here! the hood and waterproof fabric is super useful, but boring

Ive been seeing more boxy, slightly oversized fits that feel a bit fresher.
the short trench, barn jackets. Lots of pockets!

I also have a lot of toppers that could be styled a bit more and put into rotation--as my husband says I have a full wardrobe and should consider styling vs buying. I do wear my leather jackets a lot in the spring--and I really like the texture contrast they add. We have the same LL bean jacket-which is great quality but I rarely wear. Its a bit big on me now and is in my sell pile. I have an olive Beretta hunting jacket that a few years old that I always forget about! its waterproof and a bit oversized--the bomber style now feels a bit fresh, I think ill try to get it out & play with styling

my current wardrobe is below. I'm considering adding a print/ more oversized cotton/canvas jacket. (the first 2 finds) the Ganni one is on the way, but I'm also considering the j-crew print version--which is cropped.

Oh! The lilac trench is very much in rotation. I was thinking more along the lines of something that might be worn indoors as well as out (like for A/c or a cool night in summer) as well as transitional. I’m not a cardigan wearer.

I also have a dressier topper, that I wear with black pants or skirt, and beige silk skirt.

The cropped trench appeals. Are channel style jackets still worn? I like the look of the ‘twin set’ below. I do love a horizontal stripe!

I started wearing my quilted Marimekko one already, on warmer days. But probably will wear unlined wool coats more (snowing here again!) I’m not including them here since you are interested more in jackets, I think.
I’m going to wear my shorter unlined double wool jackets (brown and navy). Following by black denim and a greenish utility jackets.

My preferred styling:
a short jacket over a long top
a longer jacket over everything with cropped pants
I have trench coats, a couple of blazers and summer jackets, too.

The spring topper that I'm having the most fun with this year (so far... it's early spring yet) is a boxy cotton canvas jacket with a two-way zipper and oversized double-entry pockets. It came from Everlane about two years ago. I usually wear it with the zipper slightly open at both top and bottom, and take special satisfaction from wearing it with matching boots.

Cute look, Carla!

Like others who live in the PNW of the US - we have a LOT of toppers that are a transitional weight (not puffers, not wool coats, not shearling, not plush). You wear them almost half the year. Especially if you live close to the water.

I will not include denim jackets. Those are Summer toppers for me. My current collection:

I have a lot of toppers because of my climate which is never really hot or cold, it's almost always temperate (60F) but often windy or foggy. I've collected this group for spring, summer, autumn wear over the last ten years. I've been keeping my eye out for a orangish, swingy cotton jacket but haven't found what I want, yet. I like the idea of brooches on denim as shown in your photo. I even have a jacket that looks a lot like the one in the photo.

This is the first year in FOREVER that I am not looking for a new coat. That is not to say I haven't eyeballed one particular trend - the cropped trench. Boden has a very cute version, in classic tan and a neon plaid for the adventurous. https://us.boden.com/products/.....llow-check. Anthro, Gap, Banana Republic, even Talbots have versions! The cut is not for me, but it is a very sharp and modern look.

My spring coats were new in 2023 and 2024 and they have been workhorses. Below, the Lole and Athleta thigh-length jackets. Easy to wear a sweater underneath, two way zippers, hoods, secure pockets.

I keep pulling out my denim jacket and putting it away again. The look seems so very 90s to me, and nothing I try seems to update it.

There are vests--puffer, fleece, etc. I did not know these were actually considered for light warmth until recently. I always thought they were just a fashion look.

I also have zero lightweight coats right now. I am wearing any warm cardigan as a topper. That works.

I once had a trapeze coat made of tan trench material that was lovely...lightweight materials sometimes make good architecture. Trapeze is a good way to go if you want something interesting.

P.s. Janet, I grew up mostly in MD and I feel you so much on the summers. I’m soooo much happier in my current climate.

I love pic#1! Wear it!

Spring is long, slow, and chilly in Boston so I have a million of these items (various degrees of ancientness because I don’t care what is trendy) but would amass still more if I had room. I have:
* 3 vintage lightweight wool coats in springy colors (the notorious orange one, a green plaid one, and a pink and green check one)
* 2 leather jackets (one dark brown, one tan)
* denim jacket
* 2 corduroy jean jackets (one dark brown, one blue-gray)
* new red raincoat
And I’m probably forgetting something.

But I feel the need for a new denim jacket that is a little darker and more cropped than the one I have. It’s surprisingly hard to find the right one.

Love a brooch on a denim jacket, my girlfriend wears her pink denim jacket with various brooches and it looks terrific. I also echo Star’s idea of a longer puffer vest with perhaps a hood, the extra length would get rid of that boxy silhouette you’re concerned about. You could even layer it over utility jacket too.
Transitional dressing in Canada is tricky, because the weather and temps are all over the place at this time of year. I can’t put my puffers away just yet because we’ve had snow 2 days ago. Now we're expecting temps to go up to 15 Celsius by the weekend. So I have a wide variety of coats and jackets in my closet. Some of them are posted below.

# 1 is very pretty! What about your lilac trench ?
I only have 2 transitional toppers - an old trench and a Spring jacket.
I find it difficult to find a transitional topper in the right weight, right color and right balance between sporty and dressy. Sorry I have no suggestions!

This is such a tricky wardrobe category, I agree. I get so little use out of transitional toppers yet for the few days/weeks a year one does need one, you have to have something on hand. They never wear out!

I know that barn jackets started trending last year again from lines like Miu Miu, Khaite etc but I'm not sure how far they trickled down. The silhouette appeals to me, and I considered buying one, but I have a closet full of jackets that are hardly worn and just couldn't justify it. My current favourite is a mac style lightly lined cotton coat from COS that I picked up second had a couple of years ago. It is so unlike anything i see on other people, and it looks great dressed up or down. There is a cute olive green cotton coat with a striped lining from Joe Fresh that tempts me every time I walk past it ....but again, I do not need another topper. Last year at this time I picked up an oversize denim shirt jacket topper from Zara in an acid-like wash. Looking forward to wearing it IF it ever warms up here. We are stuck in a cloudy , cool depressing weather pattern here in MB.
