I have the truly arctic office situation (my computer is in a climate controlled room created to maintain constant temp. and humidity for artifacts that spent most of their life in frozen cabins and barns) and I wear l/s tees (sometime with a blouse on top) under sweatshirts and sweaters, under leather or spring-weight jackets, and then put a proper outdoor coat on top when I head outside (it is very cold in CO in the winter --- my personal best is -38 degrees) AND I'm a busty, broad shouldered lady. I think it is all about choosing the right fits and pieces. I buy warmer or heavier knitwear in oversized, drapey fits for wear alone under a coat (maybe with a thermal top underneath) and buy a lot of my other layers very slim --- but never pulling. I like to have ease (esp. in jackets and coats) around the bust so even when I layer up I can move around.

Another solution to the problem is to wear a scarf of some type to hide the jacket lines under your coat until you take it off.

Joana j- I was a blazer to work everyday. I layer a coat/trench/puffer over it. Like Suz - I rarely wear coats open unless weather is transitional. I will layer over leather jackets too. Since I always run cold it's a lifetime love afair. But I am a rectangle with a small chest, so this look works for me. I think sizing and silhouette will be key to your happiness. I love Suz's idea of the collarless blazers which will decrease bulk - the lanai, HL tux blazer would both be good choices if you like them on. http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/he.....s-_-1_19_B this is the leather sleeve version of the jacket I have, totally fabulous!!

I echo everything that Suz and Aida say and suggest. All my coats are fitted so that I can wear a jacket and more layers underneath them.

Joana, you'll find that layering a lightweight and thinner topper under a coat much easier, flattering and comfortable solution.

All of my winter wool coats are large enough to wear over a blazer, leather jacket, or any other indoor jacket. One of my two trench coats is also large enough to wear over a lighter indoor jacket. I always wear my coats done up, and often pop on a scarf to cover any competing neckline issues. Can't say how long oversized will last as a trend, but certainly looser and more fluid fits are going to stick around for a good while.

Yes...Angie wears her leather jackets underneath wool coats. I do, too. So does forum member Transcona Shannon (to name only one). I layer my jackets even under my puffer coat at times! Although I admit it is not ideal.

I can see how being well-endowed might complicate things for layering -- you might suit a cutaway style jacket that does not have a collar. That would prevent the problem you're describing with multiple lapels and extra bulk.

Or a coat that does not have lapels?

And about that trend , I saw bloggers wearing leather jackets under wool coats, not only denim under trench Or leather jacket under voluminous fur waistcoat.

Most of the time the decision what to wear here is about how not to freeze into icycle So open top layer happens only once in a while, on those rare september days when the morning is cold, and say afternoon happens to be very sunny :)
I consider myself a hourglass shape, my shoulders are not broad, but I am endowed in bust area, that complicates layering things a bit, it may be why lapels on lapels are driving me crazy, there is some volume there already :)
I want to explore options before shopping, because I need transitional peaces to winter. One topper weight of a cotton trench, another wool coat weight, and 2-3 months later I will wear knee length puffer coat 99.99% of time :/ (not much layering possible under that, at least I already own it).
I like the oversize trend even thought I have to chose oversize items very carefully, they convert me to a bulky stumpy thing easily. I wonder how long will this trend last. Because I would like these transitional peaces last several seasons. Maybe I should stick to classics? Can a light parka coat be considered as "classics"?

I wasn't aware that it was a "trend" (except for wearing the coat open-- that part I knew was a trend). But wearing a jacket or at least a blazer under a coat is pretty much a necessity in my climate for many months of the year -- at least if a person wants to wear a blazer at all. Meaning the jacket alone won't provide enough warmth, so the coat is also necessary.

You'll need a coat with a roomier fit to to do this. Angie recommends trying new coats on with the underlayers you might wear.

A raglan sleeved coat can also help some.

And it's harder to do with oversized under layers (either jackets, tops, or knits). It may work better for you with knits because they are "squishier" and not fittted under the arms the same way, or across the back. Are you, by any chance, an IT shape? I think those with broad (as opposed to merely square) shoulders possibly find this more difficult.

If you're intentionally wearing the coat open (something rarely possible where I live, LOL) then I guess you'd just be very selective about what tops and jackets you layered beneath it to avoid the "too busy" look you describe. If it's a fashion decision vs. something you do for warmth, then those considerations would come into play.

Hello ladies, summer was busy for me, so my good intentions of posting outfits got delayed. Maybe later I'll make a view backwards and post some summer outfits. But today I have a question :)
In two weeks matter weather here changed rapidly from 30 deg. C to 15 deg. C. In this sudden autumn my old struggle rearises: is it posible to layer two toppers? Blazer/bomber/buttoned cardigan under trenchcoat/coat/parka ? Whenever I try I always end up feeling like an onion with too many layers, bulky and uncomfortable. And when the top layer is open, if it is a trench and blazer there are two sets of lapels visible, or two sets of buttons, or a zipper plus buttons, and this drives me nuts, because I see that something is wrong, but can not identify what exactly.
However I feel comfortable wearing a really thick knitted jumper under anything, the amount of bulk is the same, but the feel is totally different :)
Can anyone brake this down for me? Many thanks :)

p.s. I am aware of this jacket under coat trend, but still have to wrap my head around it. Or has this trend already passed?
https://www.google.lt/search?q.....l&cha
