Thanks Ykk and Zaeobi.
I hadn't thought of belting a top ever the top, but I tried knotting a shirt to wear out today. I think I knotted a little high, but otherwise I quite like it.

I like the welted top on you, but have you also considered knotting or faux tucking your existing tops? Or simply wearing a belt over your tops at your natural waist?

You'd need to experiment as to whether these tricks result in a 'too bulky' feeling, but here's a video on how to neatly knot (no weird 'appendages' sticking out lol):

I don't notice skirts one women much, they've always seemed sort of formal and bland but I do like the silvery grey one. I like the pleats, the shine, the color, it's pretty cool actually. I'd say skirts are kind of an anachronism but today, god only knows about anything. It's a dystopian sci fi novel we live in now.

Hi everyone,
Thanks so much for replying, and my apologies that a busy few days have left my so long to get back to you

slim cat - it's cold weather here, so my shown examples will be based on that (though I'll take note of summer suggestions for later, though wearing velvet in summer does seem a bit strange) I like your suggestion of a skirt tied around the waist - as it would help with the tucking in problem. And I'll keep trying all my blouses and as you suggest, maybe one will be lightweight enough to work

Angie - thanks for going to all the trouble of posting your tops. Your post on tulle skirts were an incentive for me to go and get one!

Sal - thanks for the compliment. I feel tucked works well in terms of vertical proportions, but I'm also sensitive to the broadening look of the relatively light coloured waist band. Thanks for posting your top pictures too.

Rachy - yes. The sweater is welted. I wish it wasn't v neck though and so would never have purchased it for that reason (it was handed down to me)

Nikki - thanks

Column - another votes for shirts tied at waist - I'll definitely have to try this suggestion.

Jules and unfrumped - I understand how much better I'd look with the sleeves pulled up - but I really hate the feeling of it - for the same reason I don't like 3/4 length sleeves. But I can give it a try!

I do love that look of a cropped top too Jules, but not really sure if I'm brave enough! I did wear my cropped one recently to a pilates class and I was rather aghast! Mind you, if I'm not bending over etc that might be better.
Unfrumped I have some chunky, boxy sweaters so I'll post some picture with them at some point

Suntiger - yes I see the appeal. I tried the pleated skirt over a nighty that I use as a slip, and it actually looked pretty good, apart from the bra strap showing and being a little more revealing than I'm up for. So for summer that could work

Jenni - I had this amazing cropped lace sleeveless top a while ago that I could winterfy by wearing over a long sleeve top. I know it would have looked good because it looked good over another pleated skirt. But I have lost it!! But yes, I'll look out for more - and in fact I have a cropped weater I bought this year that I wore it out with yesterday - see pics below.

SF yes I know the tee with skirt look that you mean and would like to try it (though I'm perpetually short on tees I like) I am concerned about the look below the waist though as even a quite lightweight close added lines. But your suggestions reminded me that I have a cropped pink tee and I'll try that with it.

The tulle skirt is fine for our winter, with tights probably. Not sure if it will be too hot for our summers - I find it hard to remember the sensation of a season I'm not in right now!

Here's the outfit I wore yesterday - cropped pink sweater with soft moto style jacket. (Note: DH says my head looks bigger than it really is in this angle)

Working through all these suggestions has given me lots of ideas, so when I can line up a moment with a photograph I'll post some more.

The way they wear the knife-pleat skirts here is with a T-Shirt—not a fancy one, just a simple T-Shirt—and sneakers. The cropped /at-the-waist top idea works well too. The “new” polo shirts that Angie did a post on earlier this year could work well. I just got one by Calvin Klein (at Macy’s in the US, but it’s a global brand).

The tulle one is so much fun! I like the simple way you have it styled with a creamy off-white top. Is that skirt cool enough for you to wear in the winter? That’s a pretty color scheme any time, and also looks like a good combo for Christmas.

I agree with Sal. A shorter top that just sits at the waistband is ideal. I have trouble finding such but it is a bit easier currently as the high waisted look calls for it so there are more in stores.

Come to think of it didn’t you get a cropped top for exercise? You could try it with the skirts just to get an idea how you feel about the look.

Love those skirts on you!
I love knife- pleated skirts & have same issues sometimes.
For tucking, I just have to experiment with my tops. To avoid lines they need to fit over hips well so don’t ride up, and I gotta reach up under skirt and pull them down all the way.
Also I like to wear them with short boxy tops- not cropped for me, but at high hip. So I keep my eye out for such styles/ lengths if show up in either dressy version or casual. Chunkier boxy sweaters work for winterizing and for those if the top is at risk of showing skin I can wear a very thin cami under- ofttimes matching color to skirt but otherwise neutral. I also underlayer some of my shorter warm- weather tops since I would most always be wearing these skirts indoors where air conditioned.
These are very versatile because too can over time luck into dressy items- lace or sparkly- or wear with sweatshirts, T shirts.
I agree with pushing up long sleeves to balance the length- otherwise I look overwhelmed and weighed down by fabric. A good look with 3/4 or bracelet sleeves.

I would push up the sleeves a bit with these tops.
I don’t know if it’s in your comfort zone, but you could absolutely look fab in a cropped top that showed a narrow strip of skin. Otherwise I would suggest slightly longer ‘cropped’ tops that have the same proportions but don’t actually show skin (you could wear a very thin tank/cami underneath if worried about exposure when you lift your arms etc).

These skirts are lovely. My favourite tops sit just on or over the waistband - maybe with a welt. These tops below are good with my skirts. I do tuck as well but I can feel too short waisted and bulky in the mud section unless everything is right - you won’t have this problem with your longer waist and lovely slim waist.

Along with the pink tulle skirt I posted recently, I also bought a grey pleated velvet skirt.

I have not bought skirts for years and would love some suggestions about what to wear on top. Am open to buying some more tops.

The pleated skirt is quite fitted around the upper hips and seems to be hard to wear tucked tops without unsightly lines showing.
