I have a lot of printed tops, but only have a few neutral pants to pair them with - khaki, brown, navy, gray and black. I don't have, nor will I buy, any tops that won't go with one of those neutrals. This is my system.

When you look at your prints are there any neutral colors that are represented in many of them? That could be a starting point for identifying your non-print palette. Also, jeans seem to go with everything!

I am also a big fan of printed items.

If your printed items are tops I would pair them with a variety of solid bottoms. Could be denim, black or a color that is in the pattern. Also solid colored cardigans if you run cold or deal with air conditioning.

If your prints are in your bottoms then solid colored tops and cardigans/jackets will work with your prints.

A few solid items will go a long way and they don't all have to be neutral. Solid items in your favorite colors will pull together a capsule wardrobe with a lot of prints. See what colors you prefer and what are in most of your prints and start there. :)

Welcome to the forum, ALeigh! Well done for clearing out the dead wood from your closet.

It sounds as if you need to balance out your prints with plenty of solid-colour pieces to pull your wardrobe together. I see that you like denim and black, so how about finding a good selection of simple, essential pieces in those neutrals - jeans, denim skirt, sweaters, jackets - whatever you most like to wear - that will act as a backdrop to the patterns? Once you have a good selection of the neutrals, you might like to add extra items in solid colours that feature in some of the prints and that will also work back with the the neutral pieces to give yourself even more options.

I'm no expert, but this approach has worked well for me in building a practical, cohesive wardrobe. Good luck with your capsule.

What do you like to wear? Pants, skirts, dresses, skinnies, crops etc.? Do you work outside the home, and, if so, how dressed up do you need to be?

Late summer...are you located in Australia?

So, right before moving to uni (and with everyone's blessing) had a major clean out of all the stuff that was waaaaay too big for me.

What I didn't fully realise until now is just how many printed items I happens to have, so few plain ... And none of which exactly works together. Making a real capsule wardrobe impossible.

I was interested to see what you think I really need by way of mix-n-match staples? Real, undating essentials. I really need to make a list - otherwise I'll just keep buying more patterns!!! It's a problem.

Note that it's late summer here, so turtlenecks can be crossed out (since it was basically the only item suggested across 3 other forums.)
