I have given up trying to recover money....for high end items I keep just in case my weight fluctuates back, but I store them in a different space than my closet. i find a lot of joy also in passing on some of my old but not longer fitting favs to my friends and family...so i guess that is sort of like getting paid back! Also, don't forget, you've paid the price for the opportunity wear the item while it fit you...

I don't know if you can recover the money unless your items are very high end as Jjsloane mentions. I know that when I recently went down two sizes because of weight loss, I had mixed emotions. I was happy to have lost the weight, but it really bothered me to get rid of some of my nicer/expensive items. Luckily, I was able to pass down some of the best items to my sister and a close friend who loved being able to shop my wardrobe. It made me feel better about just packing the rest off to the donation bin.

I am afraid that I really don't have any suggestions. But this is a common problem, I would think. I know that I have ended up there. We buy for the life we wish we had or just because we love the clothes conceptually or we think it will work, but then it doesn't.

Good luck !

It's difficult for women's clothing unless it's really high end. Designer, name brands, NWT (new with tags) items do best on ebay. There are also some online places for clothing consignment, but I have not tried them. Check out consignment stores to see what they have and how they price things. Swap is a great way to get better use. If these don't work just do a really good sort and see what you can really use and donate what you cannot. Tax writeoff and getting the offending items out of your life is freeing as well. You will almost never get what you paid for it or what you "think it is worth". It's a learning lesson and another reminder to shop mindfully.

Craigslist, Yard Sales, What about a Clothing Swap with a bunch of friends, that way you get clothing that you love in return???

Hi Angie,

I've really appreciated your blog. I realize that though I love clothing and acquiring new items, a lot of my buying is sporadic, not well thought out, and not useful for my lifestyle. I am a school teacher and I am married. I do have a weekly date night, but in very casual Denver. I love dressy clothing, but don't have a great deal of opportunity to wear it. I also am keeping several sizes of clothing in my closet. I have so much useless clothing in such a small space. I appreciated your sorting tips, but what is the best way to recover some of the money I've spent for items. Selling to thrift/vintage stores in the area hasn't really worked for me.
