I really appreciate all of the replies, ladies.

The insight into retail seasons and the timing of transitions was particularly helpful.

I also really enjoyed hearing what you ladies are doing and thinking about.

The suggestions regarding what to focus on will be regarded with a lot concentration.

I'm hoping to hit Jcrew, Nordstrom, and Gap on my way up or down and then visit Nordstrom Rack while I'm visiting. Nordies and the GAP are my top priority as I've already scoped out some potential pieces there and my life would be made much easier by trying on in-person. I might even make a stylist appt. at Nordies since I will have very limited time in the stores. The Rack is an opportunity to pick up an end-of season wildcard or something I'm missing or can wear into spring on discount, plus update my workout wear.

I definitely think I will concentrate on the transitional shoes and bottoms, as I can wear many of them immediately, or they will be the first items I can wear as it warms up in late April and early May. A light jacket or two might be a hit, but I think it is hard to shop for toppers without having tops and bottoms dialed in. I'd love to hit tops though, simply because they are my hardest area.

In finds I've posted some items I hope to try:

Where I live, the springs are short. Still, I hate wearing winter or summer clothing to get by. This year, I bought a couple of thin vee-neck merino wool sweaters at BR. After acquiring those, I managed to find 4 button down shirts on sale from Lands End, Pendleton and J. Jill to wear underneath them and some other sweaters I own. Those 4 shirts should hopefully help me transition to warmer weather, as I can also wear them alone or over camisole/tank tops. I have some leather belts that I can use to style them as well. This minimal investment should do it. I also spent more than I planned to spend. I can afford what I bought, but feel the need to cut back on spending this year. A good bit of what I spent in 2014 was for dresses, skirts and tops (all on sale) that can be worn in spring, summer and fall; $ well spent.

I'm the same! It's still way too soon for warm weather dressing, but one can always dream. Like Angie, I think early shopping is great and give more mileage for my pieces. Right now, jackets and jeans are good buys. Later I'll look into dresses and tops.

I'm thinking about Spring! But because ours is so short and unpleasant (yes! unpleasant: sunny but cold!), I am learning not to go overboard and concentrate more on Summer.

I don't think it's too soon! I'm already thinking about spring and summer - because at the moment, I know I have everything I need for cold weather, and I'm trying to remind myself that I should be putting my energy and budget towards warmer weather!

I would take a look at your current cold-weather wardrobe, and see if there is anything specific in terms of basics you will need this coming fall, and see if you can't pick those up at sales now. I did that with my boots last March, and was thrilled when October rolled around and I already had them, ready to wear.

Shorts are on the top of my warm-weather list, and a new swimsuit. I'd like to have a bit of 'preppy nautical' in my summer wardrobe this year, which I think will translate to a striped top and perhaps a themed bracelet.

I would look at jeans and pants especially in February, since they can be tough to fit and trying on is really useful. Plus, you could start wearing them immediately.

Not too early - in fact I just ordered some linen crops this weekend in anticipation for spring. However, I feel like I haven't really even delved into much of my deep winter stuff, so I'm not really ready for spring yet....ask me again in a week though

Definitely no too early to think about Spring, but I wouldn't hesitate to pick up one or two cool weather items either. I know you had a real challenge ordering and returning sweaters, so maybe this would be a good chance to buy a seater or some other item with a low online shopping success rate because of fit issues.

It's never too early to think about the season we are in, Elly - and early shopping is usually best in my book. You pick up lots of cherries that way.

It's good to have a list. Keep it flexible and focused.

Third week Feb is a good time to shop retail, although not so fab at outlets and the Rack. Too soon for the same season stuff.

Hopefully you'll have flash sales when you shop regular stores. xo

Yes, well. Here in Australia it is HOT. It will continue to be hot for months. So who ordered loads of wool sweaters just recently? Ummm. Clearly, I don't have a problem with thinking about coming seasons and making lists.

Enjoy being able to hit the shops. Looking doesn't hurt and you can try things on and think about it and even make notes and go home and order things online later if you want. It's really good to see what's about. By then, early spring things should be in the stores.

Spring is TOTALLY on my mind as well. I've always been a bit of a summer girl at heart, but I'm trying to be careful about over-shopping this season, because I'm moving (again) from Scotland to Australia, so my seasonal transition is going to be Winter-Early Spring-Autumn-Winter. That, and if I've learned anything about these international moves, it's that I shouldn't anticipate what I will want to wear, because I will undoubtedly Get It Wrong. I've picked up a couple of silk-front fine-gauge sweaters, but that might be about it for me.

Looking at your list, I'd say that you could maybe peruse the jeans, since those tend to be stocked year-round. You might also take a look at the shoes.

I don't think its too early to make plans, but from what I've seen in stores it may be a tad early to start shopping. This week I was at the mall and everything was winter clearance. I suspect that by the end of the month we'll start seeing spring options in stores and online.

I've been thinking along these lines too. We've actually had such a mild winter I've been wishing I had more lightweight sweaters, and thinking hopefully Spring sweaters can be Winter wear for me. So I'm holding out and waiting to buy anything else until early Spring items come out. Usually for me I don't even want to think about Spring shopping until April or so, but now I'm looking forward to it.

Besides lightweight sweaters, the thing I'd really love to find is a trench as pretty as Firecracker's green one.

Is it too early?

I'm not much good at transitioning. Usually I wear winter tops until it is too hot, then wear summer tops with denim and cotton jackets. Our springs are short and cool.

I have an opportunity to do some B&M shopping the third week of February. It might be my only opportunity to do any B&M shopping this year. However, it is at a weird time of year for me. I'd just decided not to actively pursue any more winter clothing -- I wouldn't mind a few more pieces, but the time and energy economy of hunting down end-of-season stuff and ordering, waiting two weeks and returning isn't worth it this time of the season.

I do have an idea about what I want for summer and can go to regular retail or stores like Nordies Rack and outlets.

Do I neglect to shop and save my money? Go looking for winter bargains? Or start shopping for summer looking for my list?

Is it too early to have a list?

I really want to find:

a pair of tan twill pants
bf jeans
track pants
a black tube skirt
light wash bootcuts
slipper flats
white leather cons
black slip on sneakers
red flats
a dress
a sleeveless gallery blouse
a plaid cotton casual button down
a linen or white and blue stripe button down
several tank tops for weekends
several graphic tees
several drapey tees
and possibly another light jacket or two
