You are going to live somewhere, so decorate that area. Small-space decorating is different for sure, but you’ve got the chops. Think little details to give you a holiday smile, not grand gestures—window clings or a little string of lights on your bathroom mirror, swags (real if you like the scent, fake if you hate the mess) above doorways, jingle bells on door handles, etc. You can also swap things out for seasonal versions—throw blankets &amp; pillow shams, dinnerware, maybe even drawer pulls. Camping is fun, but not for months on end in your own home. Make it cozy!</p> <p>PS. If you love the decorating, do it twice, but otherwise you might want to get wintery items that you can keep up through January and into February, rather than (or in addition to) holiday-specific items you’d want to take down at the beginning of the year. We'll be traveling a bit, for one thing. Also, the house will be torn up by then, and we will have no kitchen at all by that time. Construction will start in December -- more demo and then framing and preparation for new utility conduits, pipes, HVAC, etc.&nbsp;</p> <p>Maybe we'll put up a little decor in the basement den, perhaps just my mom's little artificial tree and just lights on it, no decorations. The owner suggested turning them on when having food delivered. When growing up, we usually started Thanksgiving weekend. Having 4 days off makes a difference for all the work it takes, both inside and outside.</p> <p>Now I've learned that I have to get it not just started but done before Thanksgiving Sunday. The church's Christmas cantata is the first weekend in December, both Saturday and Sunday, with all but daily rehearsals every night beforehand. There simply isn't time to get the decorating done in and around all that, even if there were energy. If I wait until after, it's so close to Christmas that it feels pointless to put everything up. Tried it once and it was rather depressing. We don't really do gifts cause we're all trying to minimize, and I Really hate the whole consumer aspect. Mom will probably bake a bit, but I don't. We'll send a few cards out (probably from mom's huge stash), and maybe go to a couple parties, a festival or play or two, and church on Christmas Eve. It's my busy work season and low mood/ energy time of year, so don't really do much. </p> <p>I do like Christmas music if it's *actually* about the holy family- like Mary Did You Know and such, or quieter things like Sting's On A Winter's Night album. I like some of the Hannukah music too. Often I'll gravitate to instrumental jazz or Gregorian chant- cause the turning inward feeling works with the dark time of year. </p> <p>Decorations I'll put up Thanksgiving weekend generally.
