Since you're wearing a dress in your closet, it might be fun to add some new accessories --- jewelry, bag and shoes. One of these in a floral or pattern would be fun and festive.

Do you have a dressy metallic shoe?

I agree that the dress in #4 is the best. I definitely think you can brighten it up with jewelry/accessories/shoes to make it more festive. I think that length is so nice on you too.

Rant: Why, why, why is everything so blasted short? Even with fab legs like yours, it's just not the most sophisticated look and just doesn't suit everyone's proportions. I am so peeved with dress designers right now.

Echoing Texstyle -- go ahead and wear that fabulous LBD and just think of it as a celebratory, special occasion dress… one you could appropriately wear to the upbeat celebrations as well as to the more solemn events. It is a blank canvas and can be styled to fit either type of event using the right shoes, bags and jewelry.

I agree with the others. The purple dress looks great on you, but seems too short for a dressy evening wedding. The best dress for the wedding is the funeral dress.

I'd go with the black dress - classic and more formal and perfect for many occasions. I think you can add some jewelry and a bag and nice makeup and you're done. Keep in mind that funerals are a celebration too, I realize people are sad to lose loved ones, but isn't the intention to celebrate someone's life? So don't feel like you are wearing a "funeral" dress, because you are simply wearing a celebratory dress. :-).

Angie (and all),
Funeral dress is by far the simplest answer. I knew that dress worked on my body when I picked it and I need to let it work for me as opposed to leaving it in my closet. Thanks for giving me the nudge.

Style Fan: Good suggestion to stay away from black accessories!

Vix: Thanks for the sympathy!

UmmLila: Gasp! That dress is gorgeous and I would love to wear it! I think I might upstage the bride with that look, but will file it away for future occasions.

Funeral dress is good.
But in case you're considering the rental scenario:

My kidlet rented this dress from Rent the Runway to go the prom. <https://www.renttherunway.com/.....y_you_gown>

It was a good choice, and she was very happy with the process and not having to commit to owning an expensive dress.

i could see it looking good on you as well. Even if you are not 16 years old.

Hi Meredith --

Agree the Funeral Dress looks lovely, but...get that you bought it for a sad occasion and maybe can't shake the association. But since you know the shape and length look great on you measurements may be your best friend if you continue to hunt.

I feel your pain on looking for the right dress for a wedding for myself and my mom (I'm sure Janet will pop in too). I've been exploring RTR (you can read my threads here and/or message me) and even THEN it isn't simple to find something where the color/shape/length and no weird cutouts all work together.

I agree that the purple is probably both too short and too casual, but that black dress is perfection IMO. It is a great length, very flattering, and has an interesting neckline. With some blingy jewelry or a great bag and shoes, it would be perfect for a wedding. Why reinvent the wheel and buy a new dress (especially if you are being budget conscious) when you have a fabulous one already?

Ooh, I think the black and teal frocks definitely have potential!
You could accessorize that darling black dress in almost any direction and the length is such that you could wear a sky high heel if you wanted. I would guess you already have something that could transform that from funereal to celebratory!

Thanks for the thoughts Ladonna. I'm also a fan of scouring the thrift stores so I've already checked all my regular spots and even found a couple of new ones in the process! Sadly, tulle and sequins were the dominant themes of what I saw. Will think about RTR. Still feeling iffy about committing to something without a good handle on size and fit, but it would definitely help with the budget.

Beautiful, but I agree the length probably makes it too casual for an evening wedding. You could try dressing it up with hose and heels, but the heels will probably emphasize the short length. I think I would look for something else.

I am having a heck of a time finding a dress to wear to an evening wedding in early June. My plan was to wear something silk and noticeably dressy because I feel this is what is most appropriate considering the location and the individual.

The selection in my town very limited. Even more so because I'm trying to be budget conscious because I need everything (dress, bag, shoes, bra). I've been hesitant to order anything online because my size is fluctuating, but I took a chance on this purple Rebecca Taylor dress. Unfortunately it seems much more casual than I expected and is probably too short. I must have been distracted by the purple and the neckline and forgot to read the fabric content (a rayon blend). My gut says this is too casual, but what do you think? Can it be saved if I doctor it up with the right accessories or should I keep looking?

ETA: Just walked into my bedroom and now that the lighting is better there is no question the fabric is too casual. And you are all affirming my fears about the length. Onward!

Other options in my closet. LBD. I bought it for a funeral, so not my first choice for a fun night out. Teal silk. Last time I posted this to the forum people did not like it. Ha! Just looking at these other options is continuing to confirm how wrong the other dress is. The power of closet comparison!
