Interesting comment re: the outfit not being tonal if you were to lean into the background (black) color in the skirt. Looking at the skirt, I think that's right, because the gold/mustard is so prominent. Good lesson that the dominant color of a pattern is not always the background color...

Beachy-Goth....hmmmm. A different mash-up than Taylor Swift's snow on the beach entirely....

Your insight re ombre translating into an entire way of dressing is SO interesting. I so admire your thoughtful, reflective approach. And hope to learn from it!

Now, if I translate that to the patterns I most love, that would be tartan and stripes -- so contrast and multi-colours. Hmmmmm......

I know, right? I love wearing white and blue - but not in a beachy - Mediterranean way. Too casual - and you are dressier too! We can love the beach, but stick to our honest styles.

Beachy-Goth has a nice ring to it :)

Haha Angie. I love the expression beachy-darks! New sub-descriptor: beachy goth I will toss that around when I talk style to people (as I love to do). I can definitely see your brights being unique at the beach too. A very muted, neutral, somewhat monochromatic look seems to prevail at the beach here. It’s interesting how that doesn’t quite suit either of our preferences.

Bijou, haha, thanks!

DEFINITELY an earthy-beachy-mash-up, Brooklyn! LOVE it on you!!!

Although you aren't right by the water - it counts as coastal. Similar to when I lived in Cape Town. Not BY the water, but a short drive away. And we frequented the beach a LOT too. People around you dress beachy - and the colours you described are spot on! My style was more beachy back-then too. Although I was in beachy-brights! Much like you in beachy-darks ;)

Now we live right by the water in Seattle. It is FAR from beachy as you know it! Not a Mediterranean climate, you see. You wrap up around the water and islands around here!!!

This is such a good outfit. I also get the Moroccan vibes you were talking about some time ago. Black shoes would definitely change the look and make it not tonal. Fab!! And what Jaime said. I was not getting pattern can be tonal but now I do.

Thanks Jaime, Dee, slimcat, Angie and Suz.

Angie, it’s my favourite summer skirt too I think my style is getting more beachy. I think it’s the maxi skirts. We don’t live near the beach but we often go because my husband loves it. But when I’m there I always feel my style is quite urban in comparison to the local vibe! I think it’s because I wear colours, especially darker colours. The beachy look here is very monochromatic neutral (white, beige, blue, stone, black etc). Not much olive. Or red! So maybe I’m doing an urban beachy mash up.

Slimcat, I appreciate the hair comment because I’ve always thought of it as a liability, ha ha. I dream of having long, straight glossy hair :)

Suz, utilising colour certainly gives an opportunity to personalise a look. Some time ago I realised I could translate my obsession with ombré (which is essentially a tonal pattern) into a whole look. That was a game changer for me.

KILLER Gorgeous!

More tonal fabness!!! TOTALLY tonal in my book too. The tonal outfit versions that feel and look best for you and your style, are always the best ways to go. You nailed it! Like you always do!

Brooklyn, THIS is my favourite skirt that you own. Just. So. Pretty. And elegant :) - LOVE!!!

Beautifully Summery, and a little beachy - makes perfect sense by the coast of Sydney! You could be in Mediterranean Cape Town too, for that matter

This is so beautiful on you! And yes, I think going towards the adjacent colours keeps it tonal, especially in more muted versions. What I love about this is that it is completely YOU. You've made it tonal your way. With a bit of pattern. With the adjacent colours. It doesn't look like everybody else on the internet -- it looks like your personal style.

Joining in on the tonal conversation! I love tonal dressing. I utilise it a lot. Especially in summer because I have a lot of different coloured skirts. I like a low contrast look with some colour variation so it suits my preferences.

I know that tonal dressing is meant to be about wearing variations of a single colour. But I’m not that strict about it. I will often dip into an adjacent colour on the colour wheel. As long as the undertone is the same. It’s the blended palette that I like.

I wore this outfit on Monday. I would call it tonal green and green-gold. The top is olive green, the bag is a deeper olive green, the skirt is black and yellow but the yellow has a definite green undertone. Yellow is green adjacent on the colour wheel. The sandals are gold (yellow) and also have a green undertone. The beads are brass, which has a green undertone. They include brown, grey and red accents for a little (subtle) contrast. Nothing really matches. But it all tones.

I would call this outfit tonal, even though it features pattern and the black isn’t tonal. The black is a background colour. If I were to lean more into the black instead of the green and yellow eg by wearing black shoes, black top, black jacket, I think the outfit would cease to be tonal and would have a different vibe.

I am wearing tonal reds today for solidarity with Angie and Suz Next post!
