Ali these tonal looks are great. I like #2 best it looks like a classic combination but with a twist with the belt bag. I like #7 next because of the peek of white from the coat and the larger crossbody bag. But all these outfits are winning combinations. Your tonal dressing experiment is a success!

Slim cat, that's an interesting observation about gray. The colors I wear have a lot of gray or black in them, so a lot of times gray is a good neutral for me. But I know what you mean; some grays drag me down visually, too.

Yes, Roberta--sea tones. I love them!

Thanks for your thoughts, Star. The bag went with the olive coat in real life, too, better than I expected.
Sal, I am pretty sure I'm a soft summer. I feel my coloring is muted and cool. I can also happily wear some warmer, muted colors. My eyes are similar to the color of the pullover; they look gray-aqua-blue to me.

This tonal dressing looks very natural on you - it really works well. It makes me think you are probably a soft summer or soft autumn?

The last two with the dark olive puffer are my favorites. Especially 6. Something about the shade of green of the Biba bag looks very good with the puffer. On my screen anyway :). The olive boots work better for me and the pop of shearling adds some contrast that I like. Well Done!

I like #6-7 the best and #4 for slightly different vibe ( nice coat in pretty color - well done! ).
I think certain grey shades work better with some blue, green undertones - classic grey feels a bit harsh for me ( it's an unforgiving color on myself - only brings out the greying hair and washes me out completely ).

Carla, I'd love to be stylishly hanging out with you in Germany!

Brooklyn, great idea to add some shine. I gravitate toward non-shiny jewelry. I tried a necklace and took it off. Just seemed too busy to me. But thinking now, I could have tried a different one. I do have some clothes with subtle metallic elements. Food for thought! Thanks for the ideas.

Jaime, thank you. Puffers were the choice today for me, for warmth.

Thanks, Indigoprint. I got the bag on a trip to Spain, so it has fond memories.

Bijou, I'm not a big hat wearer, but I do really like this style of cap. Still, I am not in the habit of wearing them. I like how a hat can add so much to an outfit, though.

You look lovely in these with #5 being my favourite. The base outfit in #1 is just lovely on you - that soft green really suits you and I love the fluid yet somewhat tailored fit of your clothes. As a lover of hats, I think it is a great accessory and looks fashion forward, so great that it has a dual purpose of keeping you warm on a cold day.

What a beautiful and unusual colour. I would like some too. Very Australian! Lovely palette with great textural variation. You have such a great wardrobe. Well done.

My favourites are 6 and 7, probably because they align with my own colour preferences. (But we all do that don’t we?) I like the level of contrast here. Also in 2/3.

I’d love to see a bit of shine, but I appreciate that’s hard to add to a winter outfit. Easy to add necklace or bangles in summer. I wonder if you’d be up for metallic clothing? I recently purchased an olive jumper with a metallic thread. Quite unusual. I also have greenish-bronze jumpers with a metallic thread. Easier to find. I think both would work well with this palette. Just something to think about!

Thanks for the shout out!

Aw, thanks, everyone!

Carol, I do like the bag, but I don't use it often because I prefer my leather ones. It's a good size for wallet, sunglasses case, lipstick, tour maps, passport, etc. I bought it along with, or shortly after, the matching backpack, which I got specifically for a Europe trip. I use the backpack a lot--I carry it with my music to piano lessons. I like having the matching set for travel. Not that I really carry them together, but it just makes outfit planning easy, and the belt bag can fit easily into the backpack.

And thanks for the compliment on proportions! I am a little under 5'5." Probably 5'4", but I was 5'5" for so long, and I'm in a bit of denial about my height shrinkage--LOL!

Dee, Suz, and Angie, I'm enjoying your examples, too. I like how this unofficial challenge speaks to me and gets some ideas flowing about new combinations. Suz, that Patagonia coat is an unusually stylish sporty one. A sister-in-law handed it down to me, and I've often thought of culling it, because it's kind of an in-between style for me, but maybe that's part of how t has proved so darn useful. And: two-way zip, for biking and driving!

This is fascinating. I like all the variations, but feel particularly fond of #6/7 -- maybe because there's a bit more contrast (at least on screen) in those versions.

The sporty raincoat in 5 looks surprisingly amazing here -- nice proportions with the cords, as Carol noted. And the core outfit in #1 is also lovely on you. Such a restful hue!

Haha, welcome to the tonal party, lots of fab combinations. Love this soft muted colour palette, and why not add some adjacent colours into the mix, I think its creates very harmonious.outfits. Favs are. # 5 and #6, but all work really well together. Looks like we both found this tonal experiment quite helpful in identifying new colour combinations to try.

It's WONDERFUL that even you - who are a pro at this! - is finding new ways to pull together tonal looks from your wardrobe :)

Inviting myself to the tonal dressing party! Thanks to SarahD8 for getting the party started here. I watched the video she shared and found it fascinating, if a little difficult to imagine translating to my wardrobe. But Sarah and other Fabbers, including Angie, have given a lot of inspiration on the forum for putting the ideas into use.

I took an outfit that I have worn before, a pullover and cords that I bought separately but that coordinate almost as if they were made to go together, in shades I would describe as eucalyptus. (These pieces are almost monochromatic, I would say? But not dyed to match.) Then I experimented with different coats, footwear, and bags.

1) the basic outfit, blue-green pullover (Everlane) and cords (Lucky), with gray booties (Mephisto)

2) with gray tweed-pattern puffer (OSKA), stone belt bag (Everlane), gray micro-check wool cap (Boston Scully), gray gloves

3) same as 2, but swapping the stone bag for dark green leather cross-body (Biba)

4) same as 3, but swapping the puffer for a long teal coat (made by me, reverses to black)

5) same as 4, but swapping the coat for a short eucalyptus-colored raincoat (Patagonia) that matches the cords

6) same as 5, but swapping the coat for dark olive puffer (Lauren Ralph Lauren) and the booties for dark olive suede ones (LaCanadienne)

7) same as 6, but swapping the bag for dark olive bag (AllSaints)

8) the coats, bags, cap, gloves

Some thoughts on the experiment: Without thinking about tonal dressing, I wouldn't have reached for the dark olive puffer for this outfit, nor would i have paired the olive booties with it. (I credit Brooklyn for planting the idea of using adjacent colors to invent tonal looks.) And I wouldn't have put the dark green bag with the olive coat, because they don't match. However, with the eucalyptus outfit under the coat, I quite like the more blue-ish green bag. And maybe it helps create a tonal vibe, rather than simply a teal + dark olive look.

The gray coat and booties is my first impulse. While I like the long teal coat as a color option, it's not an everyday pick, because of its length. And the Patagonia coat in eucalyptus isn't a common pick for me, either, unless I'm doing errands by bike or going for a walk or something. It feels sportier than my usual style. It's so odd how I latch onto these ideas, and they limit what I consider putting together in outfits!

The cap is in each outfit, from necessity: the chill today makes it hat weather.

I'm interested to hear your thoughts.
