I love the subtle pattern mix here!
The other thing that strikes me is the contrast between a more dressy trouser and vest silhouette, and the casual/workwear vibe of the gingham shirt.
So maybe dynamism can sometimes come from contrast in register/formality, rather than color?
This outfit is reminding me of some looks from a brand called Nygårdsanna that keeps popping up in my Pinterest feed (Pinterest is being wonky for me at the moment but you can search if you're curious).

Thanks, JAileen. Yes, you are probably the Queen of Grey on the forum! Let's see those grey coats in action! Do you get depressed wearing it? But I think your winters are sunnier than mine in the PNW.

Janet, the version with coat and bag especially reminds me of you!

Okay, I love this. I love grey and I love your style. That vest is just too cute!

I have a lot of grey, and I’ve often said if it were removed from my wardrobe, I might not be able to get dressed. I used to have those same snake pattern boots. I found them hard to style and so donated them. It’s probably because I have such big feet.

Sharan -- so true. It's the bits of white (and silver, I guess) and having those close to my face that seems to make it feel wearable.

Brooklyn, I would definitely wear this again! It was easy to wear. I think the bit of pattern (and the white) helped it feel more "me." But also, the pieces individually and as an outfit worked extremely practically for my actual day -- which as you know is key!

Dee, yes, I agree. The pattern mix (especially because it is so quiet and subtle) comes across as subdued and therefore elegant.

Jaime -- the pants look a bit darker in the first photos than in real life, and a lot lighter in the last photo than in real life. They're charcoal grey.

Jenni, those snakeskin pants are so fab. And yes, I agree, a subtle pattern in pants makes them so much more fun.

Slim cat -- thank you! What is "your" grey, do you think?

Angie, thank you. I do agree that the addition of greater contrast makes it feel more like me. So interesting!

Another fab version of tonal dressing. I think the subtle mix of patterns is another great way to do it. There's a certain elegance to it all when its done in the same colour family.

Yes to what Angie said above. My first thought was this is more like how I would do tonal - sort of high contrast tonal. Although I think the pants read darker in the first few photos (at least on my screen) than they seem in the closeup shot.
Anyway, this is an excellent outfit and suits you beautifully!

Looks good! I like the pants. I love to have some kind of subtle pattern in pants rather than totally plain. Perhaps why my olive snakeskin ones are still my faves.
I find I feel more subdued in winter and I am often happy in greys, black and white etc. I only crave the pops of colour sometimes then.
I know what you mean about feeling just *so tired* of certain items. It happens to me too. So far I have not regretted editing out a few things that way, if they have had good use.

I think the reason you feel like yourself despite the tonal greyscale is because:

you added the HIGH contrast white in the gingham

you added the HIGH contrast and SHINE in the puffer and bag

These elements make you the luminous garçonne feel and look radiant

Taking inspiration from DonnaF's thread about sweater vests, and one of Carla's comments on my thread of yesterday: "When I did a lot of quilting, we talked about patterns that read as solids, and how much interest low contrast or tonal prints added to a composition. Of course it would be the same with garments! Maybe even a good thing, where texture is lacking?"

Well, let's see. Here, I'm trying it in greys. This is something a bit tricky for me. Grey is a key neutral and looks good on me (I think) but I can easily depress myself if I wear too much of it, especially this time of year! But the sun is supposed to come out this afternoon, and I have to ride my bike downtown. I wanted something practical.

The pants are charcoal, not black, and they have a faint check in a lighter grey. The shirt is black and white gingham that can read as a false plain (but gives me that pop of light that I crave). So it's a very subtle pattern mix. The vest is medium grey, as are the boots.

Strangely enough, I do not own a grey coat (I donated my two older grey coats in the last few years. They still fit and were in good condition after a decade's solid use, but I was so tired of wearing them.) This oyster jacket has a slight grey cast and is the best I could do for greyish outerwear. If I were not trying this experiment, I would certainly have reached for the red jacket instead!

If I weren't on my bike, I could have worn different boots for perhaps a bit more pizzazz. But I do feel very much myself in this outfit -- it does fit the Laid-back Luminous Garçonne persona due to the boyish nature of the vest and shirt, I think.

Here's a collection of other items I can play with in greyscale. If i veer toward pure white, I would have more.

I welcome comments and co-experimenters!
