I have on Miami Beet right now ... I love getting pedicures. But I'm really over toe-baring shoes! I'll probably continue to get pedis - some with polish, some without - as the summer rolls into fall and winter. But I'm really looking forward to wearing full shoes more often.

Ginger: consider indulging yourself in a professional pedicure someday when you want a lift. It's a wonderful little splurge.

Runcarla, thank you for those tips! I'm particularly interested in the Sally Hansen Double Duty as base coat. It would be great to use more intense colors without them staining.

My method's super easy, but it probably doesn't last as long as others. Every Sunday night during the summer, I remove the old polish (usually still looks OK) using this stuff, wash off the remover, trim as needed and slather my feet in Gold Bond foot cream. Then I repaint my nails (one coat of Essie, no base or top coats) first thing Monday morning and let them dry while drinking my coffee before work. Voila!

No one would mistake it for a professional job, but it works for me.

Karen13, I do my own foot maintenance and have many interesting 'tools' - clippers, and files for nails and calluses. I swear by a weekly Epsom salt soak, and Body Shop Pepermint Foot Scrub, and special foot cream applied when I remember (the label peeled off and I don't remember the name.)

For polish I use Sally Hansen Double Duty as a base coat. It can also be used as a top coat, but I prefer Seche Vite top coat. Both are transparent. The base coat keeps polish staining to nails to a minimum, and the top coat ensures lots of shine.

I've used lots of different polishes and find that in general polishes can vary in quality within the same brand - being of thicker or thinner formulations for reasons unknown to me. I like to experiment with different colours, so collect minis - usually 3-4 packs. I like the BRUSHES used by Physicians Formula and OPI. I very much like Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Polish, and Deborah Lipman makes a nice product. I know some folks swear by Essie, but I am not a fan. I do have Essie Blanc, because it is my perfect creamy white and I wore it all summer 2016 and half of summer 2017. This year I am changing up my colours every pedi - and throwing out the bottles after - because the polishes are oldish. I am keeping my favourite Physicians Formula dark orange: California Goddess and a new this summer Sally Hansen greige called Bare Hug. I will look for a new set of interesting minis for S/S 2019 next year.

Yesterday's pedi is an Opi silver (see below). 1 coat over the base coat, and the clear top coat. The coverage was very good.

*Addendum: I use Sally Hansen fast and gentle moisturizing nail polish remover (for dry brittle nails) although my nails are normal. (I don't paint my fingernails.)

Greyscale - white spots are often a nutritional issue (if they aren't from removing gel or shellac polish) . There is a fair bit you can read about it .
I'm in dire need of a pedi after 4 days of tradeshow work. Not sure what colour I'll do.....but I've been in pale and neutral mode most of the summer. I start out with Tiffany blue then fade out into OPI Funny Bunny or something like that . I might dive into black for the last kick at open-toe weather.

What a fun thread! I have never had a pedicure, so the results here are my own fault. I rarely have time for a lengthy drying process, so I mostly stick with Sally Hansen Insta-Dri. I love it! It’s so fast so I can have pretty color more often.

A week ago I switched to Sugar Poppy, a light medium pink. Before that, I was wearing a jade color that I can’t find on the website (yikes! Probably discontinued), and before that a coral. I used to wear red a lot, but my favorite vintage red was a limited edition, red stains my nails yellow, and it rubs off permanently on closed toe shoes and my good tights.

Fun thread and lots of yummy choices. I started wearing toe-baring sandals through YLF's guidance that comfortable attractive options existed, after years of dark heavy orthopedic-looking shoes. So I have limited experience, but really like the look. I have gotten two pedicures in the past two years, but found that even the expensive spa one wasn't particularly perfectly applied.

So I did my own a few weeks ago and was pleased with the look and durability. I switched today from bright white to a soft pink. What tools and brands of polish do you DIYers recommend? I want something easy to remove (my spa gel experience was nuclear bomb proof, which was a drawback when I wanted to remove it myself).

Oooh! Loving the dark rose polish!

Greyscale, I'm not familiar with this damage problem. If you want to give your nails a break from polish, try having them buffed. It will make the tops shiny and might take out any surface blemishes. (DS#2 does grappling martial arts and so gets the occasional pedi to keep his feet neat. The nail tech buffs his nails and they look really nice.)

I generally wear steel grey but I want to find the perfect bright red.

Question: when I leave polish on for more than a few days, removing it damages my nails no matter what remover I use (acetone or non). I get white spots where the surface of the nail is damaged, and then the polish clings to the damaged nail and is impossible to remove. Then, of course, I need to cover it with a new coat to hide the damage, so the cycle continues. Do any of you have this problem?

Since my closet is neutral heavy, colourful nail polish is a way to add a pop of colour. I do my own foot maintenance, and have been having fun with a set of OPI minis. I haven't had the same colour on my toes all summer. Not shown is the dark orange I started with in May (April was cold and wet). I'm sans polish since Saturday with plans for polish this afternoon!
