To me, excessive toe cleavage really throws off the lines of the shoe...I mean, really - how does it stay on your foot without some amount of vamp? To me, the less vamp, the less design on the shoe. It also really, truly looks like the shoe does not fit. I find that off-putting.

The fact that people observe toe cleavage as something sexual skeeves me out like nothing else. It wouldn't stop me from wearing it if the shoe was comfy and cute, but I always find it jarring and uncomfortable to be made aware of people's fetishes. Yes, I realize most people have them, but please, I would really rather not think about the conductor on the train getting off on my ballet flats. No, really.

Thanks. We don't have one of those in the area, but I see that they seem to also have Famous Footwear. I will look there, a place I haven't been to in many years. If they are on sale, they may be in the store but not on the website.

Toe cleavage doesn't bother me. This "tip" is from Kendall Farr's Style Evolution:
As Manolo Blahnik once said "The secret of toe cleavage is that it is a very important part of the sexuality of a shoe. But you must only show the first two cracks." and according to financial guru Suze Orman, "Toe cleavage is the only cleavage that should be shown at the office."
Just throwing these quotes out there, not necessarily agreeing with them. Kh, I own several pairs of this style of Dr. Scholl flats because they are sooooo comfortable. I need to find this lovely grey pair.

Ha! I should have known this would get different opinions.

I normally don't like toe cleavage. To me it seems to signal an ill fitting shoe. I guess I mostly see toe cleavage when it looks at though the woman is trying to shove her foot into a too small shoe.

However, I have a very hard time finding shoes I like and fit well. In my 20s I simply wore any shoe regardless of comfort level. Now, that I'm 35 and chase three kids all day, every day I refuse to wear uncomfortable shoes.

I have a hard time finding flats. I love flats but I have short and wide feet. Most flats dig into the bone right above where my big toe starts. The shoe I linked above fits well and has nice comfy padding inside to boot. I would be able to run after my 2 year old when he bolts.

I think I'll go with what Angie says and live with toe cleavage because I love the look of the shoe *and* it's comfortable.

I'm a no toe-cleavage girl. I have long toes, so it does limit my shoe selection but it just kinda skeeves me out. I liken it more to belt cleavage than regular cleavage, though (although I don't like to show regular cleavage, either) - more of a fit issue than a fashion choice (hopefully).

@ jenava: LOL - I am with you on that one! Still keeping an open mind, but "boots" and "open toe" in the same sentence is still hard to get my head around!

@ isabel: Re bunions ... same with me! There are some shoes that are cut in a way to dig right into my bunions (flash to mental image of stooped old lady in a hairnet). Ouch! OT - but FWIW: I went to an orthopedic surgeon for them to be corrected, but when he told me that I would have to *self-administer* an anti-coagulant shot in the skin around my navel, daily, for two weeks - I blanched. Told him "no can do!" - I couldn't even administer subcutaneous hydration on my cat when she needed it! - and canceled the operation. He must have thought I was a nut case, but as I told him: I could lie to him, and say I was going to do it, but there was no way it was going to happen. {{{shudder}}}.

I now return you to our regularly-scheduled broadcast...

Quite honestly, toe cleavage is the very last thing I worry about. I have small bony feet and long toes. I always have toe cleavage! With my walking lifestyle and fussy feet, I am *much* more worried about comfort. If I find a pair of beautiful shoes that are comfortable - I will pay the earth for them WITH toe cleavage!

Deb ! I was going to say the same thing, it is the only cleavage I have ! With that said, if a pump is cut that low on my foot it kills my bunions....

I once read that the more conservative the environment, the less toe cleavage one should wear. So if you work in a bank or are in upper management, there should be little to now cleavage.

But truthfully, who knows. How do you feel about it ?

I'm very conservative about chest coverage, but I confess I do not see the problem with toe cleavage. Do people who find it offensive wear sandals? Is the idea that there is something scandalous about toe cleavage? I'm not trying to be tongue-in-cheek, I honestly don't understand this. My grandmother thought that toe cleavage was trashy. (It was not the only opinion of hers that mystified me.)
