I should have made it clear that the palettes above were meant just for a mini capsule to try and work my chambray blazer into some of my pants and tops. Not for my whole wardrobe. I'm having a hard time styling that chambray blazer in particular because I wear denim bottoms so often - but I have deep brown jeans and some sage or olive green pants like Suz has and I thought I might be able to make it work with those as shown in the palettes above. I also have black pants to pair it with but that's easy. It's the other colors I'm having trouble with.

Oh, I love a good closet cleaning! It is funny you mentioned the ribbed tanks. They have been one of my staples for years, but this year I never pulled them out of the drawer. I am with you on finding another home for them. Good job!

Texstyle, I've looked back at some of your WIWs, and you look so fab in your neutral palette. You have a great sense of what works on you. I love your linen jacket and your khaki/taupe EB jacket on you. Perhaps it's how they work so well with your hair that makes the outfits with them really shine on you. The brushed gold necklace you highlighted in one photo is very pretty as well, and great with the colors and styles you wear.
What color are your eyes? I wouldn't overlook your eye color in picking shades to mix in with your neutrals. Look at the outer ring of your iris as well as the colors and flecks inside the iris--those are all colors that should be no-fail on you.

Great thoughts and well done! I'm hoping to get a bit of time with my fall wardrobe this weekend to really look at what capsules I can put together. Thanks for the inspiration.

So tough to tell. I think I understand what you're aiming toward. It's a soft neutral palette but not boring. What some might read as (or experience as) boring, on you has the potential to look elegant. But at the same time, it does have to have some cohesion. Hmmm.

How about taking a few pics for us of the bits you have. I do think the tortoise accessories could work -- some subtle pattern mixing would add something for sure.

And maybe something with a bit of shine.

Sounds like you are moving in a great direction here. For my own closet I find owning lots of neutrals works well with just a few prints and a bold color item or two. This way I can remix easily and don't get bored because I have the prints and bold color items as my "statement" pieces. But I strive for a smaller mix and match-able wardrobe.

I tried a couple of neutral color palettes on my computer. The python is an actual clip from the photo of my python bag. I have a chunky tortoise necklace that could bring some of the brown up top and help for when the chambray blazer is not on.

If any of you get back here, what do you think? What might you add to pull this palette together in terms of accessories? Would the brown tortoise necklace and maybe a brown tortoise bracelet (not matching but it goes with it) be good?

Vildy, no, I don't wear citron. It doesn't like me at all. Brights are really out for me for the most part, but I'd love to find a white top with a very subtle deep brown pattern. Neutrals would be my ideal - I wonder if heather grey would work with the chambray and deep chocolate?

So nice to come back this morning and read your replies. I think I dreamed of fashion last night. I did spend some awake time during the night wondering why I haven't worn the perfectly nice and comfortable red sandals I also bought earlier this spring. Why do red shoes feel hard for me to style? I don't use the vintage red clutch bag I bought either. I think it's that bold color thing. I'm going to make an effort to work them in while it's still hot.

kellygirl mentioned layering tops and that's a challenge for me too. I don't have a problem with heavier jackets and layering, but blazers feel more challenging. I guess because I love cotton and cotton wrinkles when it's bunched. I should consider one or two silk tops for layering. I do layer my knit tops under blazers and light jackets and they work but I don't know if I have the look I want.

And re that chambray blazer (so hard to wear with denim) I'm waiting for some olive slim trousers to come in so I can try them with it. I have black ponte pants but they are too heavy for summer. I also have a deep chocolate pair of light slim jeans that could work with it, but I haven't figured out the right top to wear with that combination. I could try it with a simple tee for summer. Then I get stuck on which color shoes would work...chocolate, chambray, white and what color belt and shoes? Maybe my blue suede sandals and dark brown belt would do.

Interesting read! I am nodding at the thin-ribbed cotton tanks. I feel I'm over them, and I have oh, a good quarter of a drawerful. I am paralized as to which ones to purge, though. I think I've worn one, maybe two of them in the last year, and yet each of them, I think, "Oh, gee, that's a good color. I can use that one. Hmm, that's the one I like under that animal-print sweater. That one is such a good neutral. . ." Aack! Am I reliving my mother's Depression-era childhood, or what? hahaha

"Moving forward I think Color, Fit and Feeling are going to be my main criteria. As opposed to going for something different just for the sake of trying something different or new. If that makes sense. Those "different" things end up being orphans 90% of the time."
I can totally relate to this, because I do that - I want to branch out, so I buy things that aren't in my safety zone. I can figure out ways to style them, but then when I get them home, I never reach for them - precisely because they are outside my comfort zone! And then I hold on them, because I feel obligated to figure them out.

And now, I'm inspired to divest myself of those orphans tomorrow. Thank you! Anything that motivates me to start a purge is a good thing, right? ^__^

That's terrific, Tex! It sounds like you really do have it figured out. I spent a little time in the closet today too. I was trying to put together a capsule--I failed but I'm going to give it another go tomorrow. I hear you on many levels--I have a chambray Gibson linen blazer that I thought would be a work horse but when you wear so much denim, it all kinds of blends together and washes me out. I wear it but not nearly as often as I thought. I also realized that I am lacking in layering tops. I love Angie's capsule but so many things I have just do not lay properly under a blazer. It's so frustrating. It's either too much bunching (loose fit) or the collar doesn't work with the lapels. It has taken me awhile to amass this wardrobe of things I love (but don't necessarily play all that well together) and it's going to take me awhile to figure out how to incorporate them into a capsule without having to buy anything to make something work. I'm going to take a deep breath and really try again tomorrow.

Angie's capsule blog got me motivated today I think. Well, that and a recent trip to an actual physical store to try on some things I thought I might like. So glad I did that instead of ordering online. I came home empty handed and felt glad to be empty handed. Trying lots of things on does open your eyes. I tried patterned pants in various styles and realized this just wasn't my look. The truth is that I'm getting tired of shopping/returning stuff. I KNOW it's crazy right? Seriously, I want to hone in on a wardrobe and only add a few things each season if possible. I have a few things on order for fall/winter. Black ankle boots, olive green slim pants (to replace the baggy ones I'm not wearing I bought from Gap).

I also did some closet cleaning/purging and came up with a list of some of my most worn/favorite items and looked for holes. I came away with a better understanding that I need to focus on the colors/styles I like. Moving forward I think Color, Fit and Feeling are going to be my main criteria. As opposed to going for something different just for the sake of trying something different or new. If that makes sense. Those "different" things end up being orphans 90% of the time.

I have a few items that were unworn this summer I thought I would use. My chambray blazer for one. Could be that it was just too hot to wear it and maybe I'll work it into my fall wardrobe. I also have a faded denim jacket which just sat there in the closet. It fits and faded denim is a favorite but something about the faded wash denim near my face bugs me.

I have a renewed confirmation of the colors I like- navy, chambray, charcoal, heather grey, white, chocolate brown (leopard is fitting into this brown for me as well as I bought a leopard blouse, belt and scarf this year), flax or natural taupe/tan, and black. Neutrals are and always will be more "me" I guess. I have a few items in ruby red, burgundy and a couple in deep emerald green and olive green that I still like. Only a few prints - mostly stripes like navy/white or navy/coral, one semi-floral blouse, a couple of abstract printed tanks.

What isn't working and I'm purging:

Thin ribbed cotton tanks. And I have waaaaay too many. I think most are moving on to a new home. I don't like the cling factor. Same goes for several t-shirts.

Heavier cotton button downs, esp. if they make "noise" when I move in them.

Orange or orange-red and anything too pale pink or pastel in general (aside from light chambray). I'm purging a few brights in red, orange, purple or brighter greens. The bright neon coral utility jacket I have I only wore twice on rainy days but I ended up feeling like I should be directing traffic -- not my fashion plan.

Several handbags (too small or too worn) and a couple pair of shoes I bought for a wedding and ended up regretting but got stuck with after the 30 day return window. At least they weren't too expensive.

It was good to vacuum out the dust in the closet that had gathered on the shelves and floor behind the clothes.

If you made it this far you are very patient and I appreciate it.

I think I have a better handle on what I need vs. what strikes my fancy at the moment. Sometimes it just helps to line it out.
