Thanks everyone!
Sounds like it's the brown dress, with a matching cami.
I could go shop for a new dress, but given the infrequency of events like this, I'm hesitant to do that. I think it'd be a better investment to find a versatile skirt or top for work.

Like # 2 better. # 1 is just off in top fit and how that combines with the skirt. I'm a magnet for color choices too, so I have had to resale struggle to look beyond that.
I agree with a lighter cami if you can-- is that a beigy color or peachy in the print? Not going for underwear- nude, but something springy. Then maybe accessories that pick up some of the lighter colors. I struggle with footwear but if you could find ( or have) a very modern looking sandal or some such , I think that dress would be good.

Do you feel you need to wear a cami? If you do I would get one that matched as closely as possible. I can't tell if the dress is brown but I would get that colour.

The dress fits you well. You look more comfortable in it than the other one.

Here's the next option...have had this Laundry dress for at least 10 years.

The cami is actually dark blue..I don't have black yet. But I could get a black cami if it's visibly clashing.

Thanks for weighing in!

I also like the colour, but the fit is not ideal. It's too tight on the bust - and will gape even more when you move and sit. (It's a fab idea to do the sit down test before you commit to a style).

I don't find the skirt part too poufy though. That's the look.

The color is great on you, but I think the top may be a little bit tight. I'm not really sure about that, since there is no pulling at the buttons and you may just need a different bra. Removing the pockets would probably leave marks on the fabric. I would try a different, structured belt and dressy shoes. That might make all the difference. If not, consider your other options.

GC: I don't know your style very yet, which is always helpful in such situations. I wanted to say that removing the pockets would almost certainly "show" on this type of fabric. Long term I think it would make an interesting tunic, if the flounce were removed. I can see it over leggings or skinny pants.

As it is now, I'd try with a refined belt and shoes. The color is stunning and very on trend.

Thx for all the great responses here. I have a weakness for looking too closely at color, rather than everything else!

I think many of you echoed my concern that the proportions are off, with the top a little tight and the bottom too much volume. Will look around for other options.

I love the colour on you and I think the dress fits you perfectly. I would tie the sash differently. I don't like the big bow but maybe double knot and let it lie down. I have a dress similar without ruffles and that is how I tie the sash. The bottom is a bubble. I don't think you can remove the pockets because it will be obvious. Maybe someone who is knows a lot about sewing could tell you but the fabric looks like it would show the pockets.

If this is your only option then put on the shoes, do your hair and make up and some jewellery and try again. I think it would look great on you.

I would suggest dark shoes because of your dark hair. Simple jewellery because the dress is fancy.

I love the colour on you too! And the length! I would keep the sash- I think it is needed to balance the frill on the bottom. If you remove the pockets remember that there may be variations in the colour of the fabric due to fading. I would just keep as is. Add a neat black jacket, black pumps and pearls and you're off!

The tie belt and the pockets and the bottom ruffle are just too much froufrou for my eye. The color is nice on you as is the fit. If there's any chance that you could remove th pockets in a way that left the dress looking ok, and maybe replace the sash with a structured leather belt? ...

I picked this dress up at a clothing swap recently. I like the color and the fit on top, but think it may be too "poufy" on the bottom. Also lukewarm about the pockets and wondering taking them off would improve or ruin the dress.

I'm considering wearing this to an upcoming wedding. Thoughts? I'm sure I can dig up other possibilities so don't be afraid to be honest!
