I would not wear them if they looked fantastic on me according to someone else’s idea but I didn’t like them or they didn’t feel like me.
I do agree with Zaeobi’s idea of your possibly looking into Kibbe and related systems? I’ve done quite a lot of reading around that and found it helpful to add to my sense of myself. The Gabrielle Arruda site is good IMO.

True purple looks really good on me but I've never cared for the color. A few years back I decided I was going to wear it regardless. I purchased about 5 pieces and none of those pieces lasted. I was just never happy wearing them - although they did look good on me. So I think you have to be aware of colors that make you happy and those that don't.

Have you looked into the Ethereal style persona? It's kind of building on Kibbe, but the idea is that it's using the more pastel colours (that suit you) in a more dramatically mysterious way. You don't have to go for that exact way of dressing, but just wanted to throw it out there in case it helps - maybe try a small pastel item near your face (like a scarf)?

There's a Kibbe saying that clothes don't have an ID (type), but rather the overall outfit does - I've seen items like a cream pussybow blouse under a satin lapel tuxedo blazer (both romantic) but with sharp shoulder pads, ripped black jeans & fingerless gloves (romantic edge = slightly more gothic). So it is possible to juxtapose styles!

I also 'suffer' (lol) from a juxtaposition in my natural body type VS colouring, so I do sympathise - i.e. I suspect my Kibbe type is either Romantic or Soft Classic, but my seasonal subtype is Deep Autumn. In other words, I can't do the softer shades of a 'typical' Romantic unless I want to look like an pastel zombie, lol. My compromise has been wearing darker colours but with more 'pared back' versions of soft silhouettes (like slightly rounded boatnecks instead of a deeply scooped neckline, or bishop sleeves but without any shoulder gathers/ puffs).

I'm nowhere near being a fashion icon lol, but I think this balance helps me to convey my personality (not too 'innocent' but not edgy either). Feel free to disagree though, haha!

I’ve just recently landed on the horns of the opposite dilemma— I found a knit wrap front top the color is different from how it looked in the stock photos- darker and more greenish in my LED lighting than the blue-ish -teal I was expecting, though in daylight it is more dark blue-teal. However, is exactly in the direction I want for some “ elevated basics” and works with many bottoms, and is a completely different style from my usual plain crewneck LS tops and sweaters. Plus is more spendy than usual for me. If it were any common style top, like T’s, button fronts, sweaters, I would not keep because I know there are so many other options.

But, I am leaning toward keep because I love what the style does for me, and the darker color has some advantages in that it’s more forgiving than black, but gives a moody tonal look with dark pants( black, plaid , jeans ) that a lighter or more contrasting color would not.

Ginger, that is very helpful, I hadn't heard of that! It sounds like we have similar challenges I think that would put me in the cool tonal family, like you Helena, though just barely as a neutral with slightly cool tones (blue, purple and green veins!). I'm definitely not the typical English rose, as in the description. Is there a place for someone who is in the middle of the scale in every aspect, lol?

My answer is no. But I love most of the colours in the Warm Autumn palette, and they work with my aesthetic. I have a relaxed, natural style, and the autumn colours work well.
I have been told that I look good in black many times. I feel very dragged down in black. It doesn't work for me. I do wear black for Yoga, and I have a few pieces of black pants and jeans.

Chiming in to second Ginger's tip about the tonal seasons ... That's the only system that's really ever worked for me ... I think I'm just "cool" and will happily swing around from lighter to deeper, and from more to less saturated ... it definitely opens the playing field to find colours that flatter AND feel like you

I’m a light spring in 12 tones- my colouring works well with peach, coral, raspberry, iris, many shades of green, light beige and creamy white. Nothing too dark, or too grey. Black and grey are not good at all.
The clothes I like are modern and quite sculptural- rarely made in these colours!
I’ve adapted- I wear beige, cream, white as my base, then work in a block of one of ‘my colours’. Example outfits (all with gold jewellery):
-cream recycled cotton balloon jeans, white long sleeve tshirt, beige suede ankle boots and a boxy knit vest in iris
-beige long sleeve tshirt, white wide leg jeans, beige pointed flats and long slim cardigan in green
-cream silk trousers, white boxy cotton top and raspberry pointed flats
Etc
I would say this works well BUT there’s a lot of laundry!!

That’s a good question Angie.

For me black is not my best colour - nor my worst. Why do I wear it?
- mix and match for workwear
- it’s great for leggings - often more flattering ( opinion)
- it’s timeless and elegant often
- it’s readily available
- it’s a good way to blend in at times - which can be useful
- it’s our National colour!!

Warm toffee, blush and chalky white are more flattering to my face. Warm olive, camel, navy and light grey feel similarly flattering to black to my eye.

My answer is no, much like others have expressed.

Colours are VERY emotional and personal. (Patterns too, but colours more so). If the colour of a wardrobe item looks and feels off - that is IT for the item. Nothing else matters as much - at least, not to me :)

The flip side to this question is as interesting:

Should you wear colours that you love and make you feel fab, but don't look great?

quietloud, for color theory may I point you to Seasonal vs. Tonal Color Families? Reading your confusion sounds so much like mine! I know what colors work, but I just don't fit into any season well at all.

- Cool skin, pink undertones
- Deep blue eyes, a little brown around the iris
- Hair warm golden-reddish-brown
- Love mid-tones
- Look terrific in pure white and not so terrific in off-white
- Look terrible in icy light shades and brownish/yellowish neutrals
- Overwhelmed by most jewel tones, underwhelmed by soft grayish shades

The idea at the link uses the 4 Seasonal color families, but defines them with a sliding scale of three factors: Light -> Deep, Bright -> Muted, Warm -> Cool. So a Season, like Summer, is Light, Muted, and Cool.

Whereas Tonal Color Families are defined mostly by a single one of those factors. Light, Deep, Bright, Muted, Warm or Cool.

I am neither Bright nor Muted (no jewel or icy tones, or grayed shades), and neither Light nor Deep (few true pastels, super darks are too much). On a sliding scale, I'm firmly in the middle. Which is why I don't fit into any of the Seasons, because they are all at one end or another of the sliding scales. But I do lean to the warm side. So I'm just Warm Tonal Family overall!

This means I can pick and choose all the warm-ish colors I like from various palettes. The picture is the Warm illustration; I mostly avoid the browns. I also pick up lots of colors from Spring and Winter, just avoiding what is too bright or deep. Most of Autumn is too deep and Summer too muted, but they're not terrible.

I'm not sure if this helps your color understanding, but I had to share since your confusion and contradictions sounded so like mine. You may fit best into one of the Tonals, since you have characteristics of all of the seasons seeming to conflict, like I do.

At one time my closet had a lot of color and as I honed my wardrobe, it became mostly neutral…mid and light denim blue, navy and all shades of grey. I can go for days wearing these neutrals feel fine but then I find I miss the added joy I get from color. My wardrobe does include carefully selected colors from my personal palette which I call Mediterranean Beach. My history with seasonal color typing is fraught with problems as I have been typed as three different season…Spring, Autumn and Summer. It’s enough to say that my skin is neutral and I do best with the light and mid pastel tones of a summer palette although I can also get away with some light and mid warm tones as well. I do not add color to every outfit. Sometimes I add a dash of color by adding a colorful knit cardigan or topper, sometimes I choose colorful accessories (belts, handbags, scarves, socks or jewelry). My jewelry collection includes a topaz pendant, some turquoise earrings and a necklace, malachite earrings, rubies, etc. I have a favorite silver bangle that had a yellow enamel band. The color added when using a pair of ruby earrings and a red belt may be subtle but the color stand out enough against the neutrals. I wear colorful exercise gear because it’s more visible when I’m walking outside. I added some colorful knitwear (cashmere sweaters, hand knits) that play well with my jeans and trousers.

Something not mentioned yet by anyone, I have more than one pair of eyeglasses. I have some colorful eyeglass frames use them when I want to add some color to an otherwise neutral outfit.

Lots of food for thought in everyone’s responses! Thank you for all your input :)

Suz, YES to a charcoal (subtle) plaid trouser! I think that might be just the thing to sharpen up the softness of these pieces while also working with the color. Good point about plaids often having a thread of color in them. And you are right, in the past I would never have considered a plaid, but I am open to experimentation, and I think as long as it’s subtle enough it could work.

I tend to be the same in that I only wear colors that (mostly) flatter me, but wouldn’t wear a color that flattered me if I didn’t like it at all. But I want to keep an open mind, and like you and Helena say, certain colors doesn’t have to equal a certain style. I think that’s where I was going with this post, because I do want to challenge myself a bit in regards to my own perception of what I can or cannot wear.

I have never been able to figure out my color season, whenever I try I just end up more confused! I feel like my coloring is full of contradictions. I have olive toned skin (pale and sallow in winter, golden in summer) with neutral-cool leaning undertone (I think!). My (undyed) hair is a medium cool toned brown with lots of natural golden yellow highlights (and some bright whites coming in!). My eyes are dark slate blue with large amber rings around the iris, so they look kind of green from a distance. So everything seems to be a mix of warm and cool tones. I have always been called warm toned, and anyone vaguely familiar with color season theory has tended label me as autumn, but I look dreadful in warm autumn colors so I know I can’t be. Perhaps some sort of summer.

I think I look best in mid-tone hues, and absolutely awful in anything too light and washed out or dark and muddy. Same with anything too warm or icy cool. I do look good in both black and white though, and I also prefer contrast to tonal color. My neutrals are best when truly neutral, not too cool or warm. I think I can wear both silver and gold (with a personal preference for gold), and diamonds and pearls or anything pearlescent really brightens my skin tone. No dark metals. Blues and greens are where I am most comfortable as far as color, like the light blues above, true indigo denim colors, and mid tone forest greens and sage. I do wear some lighter olives and moss greens too, but have to be very careful about them not being too muddy and yellow toned. I’ve worn lots of pink in the past, but not for a long time now, and I’ve yet to find a red that suits me.

Hm, I’m considering a round in the shops purely for trying on different colors now. :)

I put aesthetic ahead of colour preference. Currently I have a variety of colours in my wardrobe, some not conventionally flattering for my colouring. I always go with how I feel and whether something feels authentic to me.

The colours you mention work well on me and my Kibbe is Theatrical Romantic, but my personality is not that of a soft person. There is a certain toughness in my character that I like to express in what I wear and so whilst I love wearing those colours I do so in a way that feels right for me.

I wear almost any color, so I don't know that I have specific ones for my style, beyond smatterings of black, white and primary colors. I think what I struggle with are color combos, which I'd have trouble incorporating unless someone really convinced me. Some examples are green and brown, and green and blue.

Such an interesting question.... and with a variety of answers.

I think everyone should choose colours that they want to wear - brights, pastels, neutrals etc - and with a few exceptions take away the connotation that comes with them.

For me, my preferences change and adapt. At the moment I seem to be drawn to softer colours rather than brighter colours, but a few years ago it was the other way.

I'd go with your preferences - I think you will be choosing shades that suit you.

The answer for me is no. And I agree completely with what Janet said. There is an emotional component to colour as well as flattery.

That said, I find to my surprise after one of Runcarla’s posts, that I am one of the more colourful dressers on the forum. I have all colours represented in my wardrobe, just in the form that I prefer (mostly darker, muted shades). I think if you dress all neutral, and don’t wear any colours, you are denying yourself a pretty useful style tool, that is, colour. Fine if you love neutrals and don’t want to wear anything else. But if you like colour (whether dark, light, bright, pastel, whatever), I would personally try to find a way to incorporate it. Just be picky, picky, picky.

Oftentimes the autumn colors that should work for my coloring are in clothes that are way too casual (picking pumpkins in a field)- so I reach for black instead! It's really hard to find the right color + the right style, if your style isn't traditionally associated with those colors. It's definitely best to shift in just 1 direction (color Or style) from your usual, instead of both at once.*

Have you looked at Kettlewell? They have lots of very simple styles and you can sort by color season. Things do sell out quickly on there though, so you really can't wait for a sale in my experience.

I'm nodding along with Mary Beth re how to incorporate -- visit thrift and consignment and look for menswear elements. Or maybe even menswear! You might be able to snag a men's or boys' jacket in one of these colours. Even if you don't end up enjoying it, it will be a fun experiment, low cost, and no cost to the environment.

For the blue cardigan and pullover -- how about a charcoal plaid pant? Like one of these examples.

A lighter grey plaid could also work. Or a navy plaid.

Plaids can be useful because they definitely add a garçonne touch, and sometimes a Glen Plaid will incorporate a blue or red or pink or yellow line as part of the pattern and you can wear a shirt that harmonizes with that colour. Or if a shirt is too much, then maybe a scarf, or a tie. Or a hat (for cooler weather) which is also near your face and will light you up.

You may have shied away from plaids in the past because I know you've said you are pear shaped. Never fear! The right, low contrast plaid will not make you look wider where you don't want to look wider. :)

ETA: I tend to agree wth Helena -- we sometimes stereotype colours but while certain colours might be associated with a particular style or aesthetic, colours themselves are neutral in that regard (ha!) and a chic, minimal or avant-garde piece in one of your pastels could be very strikiing! Admittedly, such pieces can be harder to source.

For myself, I only wear colours and neutrals that flatter me and save the ones that I love but that don't flatter me for home décor. (yellow and gold, Ii am looking at you!)

Having said that, I do not wear all the colours that flatter me, because I don't like them all! I'm some version of "summer" in the colour-typology and although I like pale to medium pinks on others and a cool pale to medium pink looks great on me, I know from experience I won't wear it, so there's no point buying it.

I stick to blues (pretty much any blue), reds from true red through cranberry to burgundy, a bit of lilac and lavender, and the odd bit of green -- plus white and grey.

Also, if you went by colour typology alone, I "should" dress tonally. But I like contrast (despite being low to medium contrast in my colouring) and contrast likes me! So I wear the stripes I'm not "supposed" to look good in, guess what? I look good in them. Or at least I look good in some of them. But it took experimentation to figure that out.

unfrumped, some great advice here! I think you are right about focusing on items that are worn close to the face when potentially focusing on those «flattering» colors. And also keeping in mind comfort zone as far as style and also quality. I kind of like the idea of having a very small colorful capsule with just a few pieces that I can draw from and mix with my neutrals when that colorful mood strikes.

I struggle with this. Colours from the autumn palette - mustard, greens (especially olive), some browns, and muddy colours in general - look really good next to my face and hair - but I don’t love them Since I need way more tops than bottoms, I’ve tried to incorporate some of these colours into my closet, but I just don’t reach for them and eventually out the door they go!

The same goes for style types. From everything I’ve read (and what I can see in the mirror) I’m probably a Kibbe ‘natural’ but in my heart I’m a classic with a hankering to be a gamine. For me, at this time and place, emotional happiness and comfort trumps what flatters when it comes to style and colours.

I look great in pale blue but prefer to wear different colors for work ( black and white, navy and white..) however I have a pale blue puffer with black details that I adore and enjoy wearing.
The place/environment may dictate on certain colors - some that empower you, and some that relax you ( for me - soft grey as easy one at home and dreadful at work ).
The bright colors are easier to try in small doses as accessories - like a small bag, hair accessory, jewelry ( usually my choice ). Play with something unusual and see what happens - good luck!

Mary Beth and RobinF, yes I think being able to merge it with a more sleek, menswear inspired look would be the way to go if I am to incorporate these colors. I love your idea of looking in thrift stores for this. You also have me wondering if these softer pieces I have could work with more tailored menswear inspired trousers in a slightly softer color. I only have black trousers which I find a bit harsh, or light grey and beige which is too soft, but maybe something like a dark grey wool trouser could work.

Helena, yes, I am definitely guilty of thinking of color in a stereotypical way! I think it hasn’t helped that while pastels have really been dominating the stores here for a while, it’s all styled in a super romantic way, and I find it hard to look past that. Again, it’s a creative practice I suppose. ;)

LJP, that is absolutely true, and I would never wear something *just because* someone else liked it on me or said I looked good in something. So my thoughts weren’t really based on that comment in itself, it’s just what got me reflecting on which colors actually flatter me, as opposed to which colors I’m drawn to, and wonder whether it’s possible to merge the two in some way. I also agree with not subscribing to any *shoulds* regarding my wardrobe, but I think I am still searching for that truly happy place with my wardrobe and I get the urge to experiment once in a while! :)

I think we need to acknowledge our emotional comfort in colors, regardless of how well the color may flatter us. I look good in bright magenta and hot pink, but every time I buy something in that kind of color, I tire of it quickly. I almost feel like it wears me rather than the other way around.

I have much more tolerance for small bits of super vibrant colors (ie, in a print or an accessory) that seem good with my coloring but are too bright for my preferred vibe. I’m just not a head-to-toe bright person. So I say pay attention to your gut feelings! We don’t have to wear every color that suits us.

Good advice above.

Since you are talking about colors that “ look good “ on you, I think of that as “ face colors”, so, tops ( or dresses) , toppers , scarves. So my thoughts are mostly about those items. As opposed to if one is thinking, my outfits are boring, I want to add more interest , more complexity but keep base the same- dabbling purses, jewelry, shoes.

I agree that a good way is to look for something that’s about exactly what you wear in what I guess are neutrals, so the item is smack in your comfort zone but color is different. I love those blues you showed and actually they are rather “ quiet “, and mix well with neutrals. So you could get a little more granular about which colors are your best, visually, and see which of those are most closely aligned with your regulars, or of course, just your favorite color !

Probably you don’t want to spend loads
on an experiment , so I do applaud the thrifting. However if it’s not the same quality as what you usually wear, or doesn’t fit other needs for fit, fabric, care requirements, you might end up disliking it for those reasons.

I have been adding pieces in a few of my colors that are less mainstream, and I do have to be careful about “ color goggles “, Ooh, look at this color! , and not being picky enough about fit or style or quality something. Unless it’s very intentional, such as I’m going to get this T shirt on sale just to see if this color really works. But even then, it still is a waste if that T shirt is wonky.

I’m sometimes tempted to go in the other direction— wear clothes that aren’t my best colors - many classic neutrals are not good face colors for me-so it is easier to mix and match. Especially for travel capsules.

I’m also influenced by “ closet candy” photos. As you know, a lot of blogs and photos of “ capsule wardrobes” and lovely organized closets feature a soothing, gently graded color lineup of just a few neutral colors. So, visually it’s very soothing and also those types of posts seem to outnumber more realistic closets!

Anyway, you shouldn’t feel you have to make changes just because someone else likes how you look in something, but you can experiment on a small scale to see if you yourself have some real “ happy colors”, and you can do just an item or 2, or a small capsule , or something at- home like pj’s, robe, loungewear.

My answer to your question is no. I tried and bought some pieces in colors that look good on me and later struggle to put them in rotation. Muted reds and browns look good but they are not my jam and I gave away both pieces.
Color needs some experimentation. I would suggest buying a few garments (with a good return policy) and try them on with your own things.

Well, for starters, you don't *have* to do anything, nor feel like you *should* wear something . You never can be sure of the real idea of the co-workers comment . It should be your choice or decision to try new things or expand the colour palette in your closet - not somebody else's. (never end a sentence with a contraction, sigh) Anyways - the answer would be no, I don't wear pastels or neons (both of which work with my skin tone) because it's not where I'm going style-wise. It's not that important *to me* to be branching out based on something I think I should be doing - and this came with age and experience, lol.
