DayVies: In my "meh" Macy's I saw a Sarto bootie very much like the one you posted. Since I couldn't find a salesperson, I decided to try them another day. I'd appreciate your continued reconnaissance on the bootie/boot front!

Marley --- the Petty's might be just the ticket. I love the idea of suede, although my climate (Chicago's pretty intense in winter) doesn't do suede any favors. They seem to provide plenty of room for the little piggies.

These metallic flats are great. I agree with the others, if boots in #1 are so comfortable, keep them until you are sure you have a proper replacement.

Beth Ann - have you tried Sam Edelman Pettys as a replacement for boot #2? They're a great heel height and can be worn with both skirts and pants. Also - love, love, love the pewter pointy-toed flats. DSW you say? I just might have to make a trip to DSW - my metallic flats are looking awfully round-toed!

I am a big fan of pointed toe flats especially in pewter. There is a sweet pair at target that have been calling my name -- I may just answer. I prefer your new ones to the old ones as a result of my pointed-toe preference.

As for the boots I see your point I actually prefer the sleeker lines in #2 to the heel in #1. The lines of #2 keep it from looking dated to me even if the toe is squared. I'm in the market for a new black (tall) boot myself -- I also have wide feet so I'll share what I find. I did pick up a very similar pair to these earlier this year. I think when I bought them they were on sale because it was January.

Thanks for the sole support!

Rae: Your purchase spurred this post. Knowing a LA personal stylist is wearing squares toes will help me wear these and feel fab. After all, I'm really more interest in developing an enduring a personal style than endlessly chasing trends!

Sarah and Kyle: I completely understand your concerns for foot health. I have good feet, if a little bit wide, peasant feet, actually. No high-class Italian shoes for me! Still, I can see the hint of a bunion coming on, and my feet tire in poorly fitting shoes more quickly than they used to. I have many more miles to walk and, while I like fashion, I don't want to be hobbled, now or later, for it! Sounds like our feet our similar

Adelfa and Susie: I've noticed from your posts that both of you have wonderful footwear!

Isabel: I don't know Fly London...off to check it out. Your comments remind me that European footwear is all over the map stylewise.

Suz: You and I are both strapped for tall boots, although for different reasons. Fortunately, we have those fab red Munro booties to console us!

I think you should wear what you like and what is most comfortable. As someone who somewhat recently has developed fussy feet, I am a lot more willing to sacrifice on-point style for comfort, if it comes to that. While I am not personally a fan of the square toe look, if that's all my feet could tolerate and I liked them, I would wear them with head held high.

I just bought and happily wore a snipped toe bootie. They didn't get rave reviews here, but I didn't feel like the tomatoes were being thrown, either. And they were soooooo comfy. I figure they are like Danskos where they won't be the height of fashion but can pass for an edgy look like the brands Isabel mentioned. I also agree that the snipped toe that you have (a pointy to box that gets squared at the end) looks much better than a truly square to box.

I also have a deep love of square toe shoes. Your boots though don't seem really square, they are kinda pointy and squared off , if that make sense. And I see that sooooo often in higher end shoes like Fluevog, Pikilinos, Fly London and so on. I love your flats by the way.

Lady, I hear you loud and clear. And you are making wise decisions all round.

1. Those metallic shoes are gorgeous. Brilliant purchase, in more ways than one! If they are comfortable with the pads, you are good to go. And a perfect replacement for the older round toed version.

2. I really like your boots in #1. I do not think they look obviously dated. And I can see how they would fit and flatter you. In fact, to me they look like your version of a delicate boot. If they are 10 hour boots in addition, so much the better! It makes me think you should comb the Aerosoles site for a new version of your pant booties, or a new version of these dressy ones if funds hold up.

3. I like the other booties, too, but if they are not comfortable, I would definitely be on the lookout for a replacement item.

Boots, booties! ARGH!!!!!!!!

My ONLY tall boots at the moment are my 6 year old Franco Sarto roundish/squarish toed ones. I cannot throw them away, however worn, because they are the only ones I have found that fit. And they are so comfy it would be a sin to give them up anyway.

Beth Ann, those pewter shoes are beautiful and they look very nice on your foot. I actually like #1 a lot and vote keep, especially if they are comfortable. I do think an update on 2 is a good idea. For comfortable options have you tried Born or Clark's?

Full disclosure: I am a late adopter and I keep my shoes forever. When pointy toes came back in, I didn't understand the hoopla because I already had several in rotation from the last time they were in style. I actually got complimented on the forum for being in style.

So, I have a pair of square toed boots that I love, wear, and consider classics. They are a favorite. I also have a slightly snipped pair, ditto.

Your #1 booties are comfortable and flattering and have good life left--to me this is a keep. I love #2 but life is too short and over the last year or two I've passed on some lovely shoes that aren't comfy.

The flats are a great find! Super pretty.

Isn't is funny how a detail (like squared toes) won't bother you at all, and then it'll be the only thing you see when you wear an item? Thanks for helping me keep an open mind about these booties. Mona, you remind me how valuable comfort is, Ceit , you're right that this style is still everywhere, and Deborah, you remind me that I actually liked the toe when I bought them! And I'll definitely check out Hush Puppies --- I wore them as a child!

Eliminating the too narrow booties is a must. To me the #1 booties work, but i think i have a stink eye for the pointy toe trend because it is ill suited to the anatomy of most peoples feet. The new silver shoes are lovely. I like the architectural detailing, are you ok with having to use the little pads to make the shoes comfortable... I can feel them starting and ending on my feet and that bugs me. It sounds as though this combo works for you though? And as such the silver look like a total yay!

Beth Ann, can I tell you a secret? I love square toed boots and shoes and have some in my wardrobe and wear them happily. I realise that the 'toe' can date a shoe/boot, but I often find it's the heel that I will notice and that I feel often dates footwear. Each pair of footwear you have show here look very good to me. Love #2 and the boots in #1 do not look dated to me and I agree with you on how and why they work for you.

My only suggestion for comfy boots would be to check our Hush Puppies. I have been over the moon with mine this year.

There has been some discussion on the forum recently about the, ahem, dated-ness of square toed boots and shoes.

I've been eyeing my black booty collection suspiciously. They are only a couple of years old, and, although they need a little spit and polish, they would easily last me another season.

1, and on the left in photo 3: My Aerosoles dress booties. These are easy to work in, even on 10 hour teaching days. This length is tricky on most people, but it hits me just at the curve in my calf and works with dresses, when worn with dark hosiery. I no longer care for the snipped toe, but there is a seam across the toe, and another making a sort of yoke near my ankle that gives a bit of a Victorian feel that works with my overall style.

2, and on the right in photo 3: Liz Claiborne booties. These have a comfy rubber sole, but they're a little narrow, so I don't wear them 2 days in a row. I don't wear these with skirts, because they are awkward looking at the ankle, but they're a great heel height for pants. NOT comfy enough for, say, a shopping expedition in Chicago.

4. New pointy toed flats (Kenneth Cole Reaction, DSW). I love these pewter flats. I sized up to give me adequate room in the toe box, and added a ball of foot cushion to keep my feet from pushing forward in the shoe. They are a replacement for the metallic flats on the left in #5. I appreciate that the point is not exaggerated. I think they'll work with both pants and dresses/skirts.

I'm leaning toward allowing boot #1 to stay, although I'll replace if my funds hold up and I find a better dress bootie. I wouldn't buy the snipped square toe now, perhaps, but I don't want to throw out shoes that have some redeeming qualities. #2, however, is on probation. I think I could use something more comfortable -- shopping worthy.

What say ye? Any suggestions for a truly comfy black bootie? 1-2 inch heels are best, and my foot runs all little wide. Budget matters -- under $100 is best, but I could go as high as $150 for something exceptional.
