In spring and fall I sometimes wear ballet flats or loafers with sheer trouser socks. With skirts I'll wear nude fishnets, sometimes layered over regular nude nylons.

In summer I like to just run around in ballet flats, but I try to wear those little socks to keep my shoes clean. They're comfortable on your feet too but I hate it when they peek out from the shoe.

I live in Canada and there's 20cm of snow out there and indoors, I take off my socks and wear my heels without hose or socks. If I'm wearing boots, then yes I'll wear socks.

alaskagirl -- no kidding about shorts in the snow! Many year ago, my husband lived in snowy Ottawa, and one time when he was on the phone to his mom she was complaining about the freezing cold weather in Vancouver. He replied that it was beautiful in Ottawa that day -- so nice he'd gone jogging in shorts -- and when he asked her how cold it was in Vancouver she said "five below" (-5 Celsius). Guess what the temperature was in Ottawa? Yep, five below there too. So I guess it's all perspective!

I have tried those little socks for ballet flats too, and I absolutely cannot get them to work for me. Five steps and they slip off my heels.

I often wear nude fishnets with my flats. I like the look and like Mary said, they're surprisingly warm.

My feet get cold too. I wear nude trouser "socks" with ballet flats- it's more like hoisery than socks. Unless someone was looking for it they would never know. I just get the cheap ones from the bubble gum containers in drug stores.

I usually have cold feet and either use boots and socks or ballet flats without any hose. But I've seen black hose with black ballet flats that look very nice.
Also fishnets sound like a very chic way to work the suposedly spring/summer months.

Elizabeth, it's 34 degrees here today and people are in shorts and flip-flops. There is still FEET of snow on the ground!

I am terrible about summer shoes, other than gear and slides. And I don't wear ballet flats either. I don't worry about going barefoot in shoes though (if that even makes sense) - I am so happy when my feet can be free of layers!

I don't have any ballet flats (gasp!) so it's not an issue. In cooler weather, I wear mostly ankle boots and socks (with pants) or knee boots and tights (with skirts). Sometimes I wear converse sneakers with jeans and socks. If it's nice enough to not wear boots of some kind, it's also nice enough to go sockless, in which case I wear my low to mid-heeled pumps. I do love the feeling of bare legs in the warmer weather.

It also might be an acclimatization thing -- if you used to live somewhere warm and now you don't, your perception of cold might be different compared to somebody who has always lived in somewhere damp and drizzly. I grew up in Vancouver, and when I moved to California, I couldn't believe all the people walking around in jeans in what (for me) was sizzling shorts weather! How are they not sweating to death, I thought.

I wear socks or tights in autumn, winter and spring. But then I wear either short boots or shoes with shoestrings in winter. Bar the day I went to a congress in SteamShip Rotterdam. I wore my pumps and on the way home my feet got very cold. Brrrr.

I have no problem wearing no hose, but I don't wear flats often so am usually in socks+heels/boots. If it's truly cold and I must MUST wear flats I have those little socks that cover the heel and just the tips of toes. Not the warmest, but I'm OK in flats once we're in the above 50F.

For me, this is where the concept of Spring boots has become really attractive. I haven't found any yet, but it seems more "right" than wearing hose with ballet flats. When it comes to heels, though, I agree with either sheer hose or nude fishnets.

I love my Oroblu microfishnets in "sable," which is really a nude/tan color. I get 'em on eBay for about $15 including shipping. They're surprisingly warm.

Okay, maybe this is just my own problem...but does anyone else dislike wearing shoes without hosiery of some kind? Except in a warm summer climate, which is where I used to live, my feet just freeze in flats, yet I see lots of women running around in ballet flats with smiles on their faces! Do they know something that I don't know?

So...if you live in a climate that tends toward cold and nasty most of the year, what kind of hosiery do you wear when the calendar says Spring and Summer, but the
mercury on the thermometer is still a wintery low?
