When first explaining the draw of Winners, Marshall's, and TJ Max to DH, I also explained that the items in store are there for a reason - overstock from the previous year, a design flaw, or defect, unpopular colour, etc. There might also be items made just for the stores - but of that I am not sure. You can almost always get Lauren by RL, Calvin Klein, and Anne Klein. I've picked up Rachel Roy, Philosophy, Fossil, Longchamps, and Franco Sarto.

I like to capsule shop at these types of stores, quite literally filling my cart with items - and then whittling them down to a few gems. If short on time, I visit just one department - shoes or bags. I love how they order their shoes by size and bags by colour.

It is an interesting market study to see what designers they get in store. When I first started being interested in fashion, my Winners carried a lot of Liz Claibourne. About 18 months ago there was a lot of Tahari. Last year Cynthia Rowley was quite abundantly. This year I am seeing a lot of Coach in the shoe and bag departments.

For my birthday, I got a beautiful gray vest from my daughter. I was surprised to see that it was from TJMaxx. I had given up on them because I never had any luck finding anything I wanted, but I'm planning to give them another chance because I liked this gift so much.

i think it all depends by store.

runway items all look great until closer inspection - they are snagged, ripped, dirty (which is fine if stain comes out) .

I'm pretty sure TJMaxx recently acquired Sierra Trading Post, which often carries discounted Fryes, Munros, etc. -- higher end brands in addition to the outdoor rec brands they're known for. Could be part of the change in line-up you noticed.

hmmmm….i actually don't think its tjmaxx stepping it up, i think its actually the brands you mentioned having problems. the only way that tjmaxx can sell those brands is if they have product to sell tjmaxx, and they reason they'd have it sell is because the miscalculated how much product they would sell to "regular" retailers.

I find that tjmaxx (and marshalls) stock varies greatly by store. The downtown Boston ones for example have much more high end stock than the suburban ones. Lots of Vince, rag and bone, helmet lang, theory, etc. I've scored some great deals there. Anyway I think they choose what to stock in each store based on the clientele.

ETA: pro tip: the purple tags at tjmaxx denote "runway" items, i.e. the higher end stuff; if you're scanning sale racks quickly it is easy to spot them....

Interesting! I have found so little there in the past that I stopped going altogether, and I work right next door to one. I will have to pop in again one of these days, just to see what they're up to.

my TJMaxx has some higher end brands, and there are some on there website too. But they have always had a few -I have Joseph Sibel shoes from there and have seen Monroe there in the past. One is more likely to find gems at Marshalls though, I think.

As in a prior post, my TJMaxx's seldom have many gemsin terms of coveted brands, but have a lot of what I think are made- for- the- market lines of various makers. So I was surprised to find Frye and Munro footwear recently. Then this week there was an EF sweater
From last winter, AT wool jacket, Polo blazer and several other " real" higher- end items ( not all things that I would particularly want, but notably good items).
Wondering if this is just random or is there some intentional change in the mix? It definitely would get me in there more if the odds, like gambling, improved!

ETA: Added a stock photo of the EF yak/merino sweater. I think I may have seen it at Dillard's, but not in my size. It's a good color as one of these indeterminate, medium-dark neutrals that fits my coloring, and is comfy. I am going to try it at home to see if it works with bottoms that "want" a shorter top and if versatile enough to make more than one outfit. Also will try over a black longer top ( sleeveless, shirt-collared top) with zips unzipped. Biggest pitfall is "EF goggles," if it is just one more random sweater.
