Eileen Fisher. I have three of these. They are soft, cozy, not tight at the neck, very lightweight. (I don't think it's really quite sheer, despite the name.) The fabric is cotton and bamboo, yet it feels almost like there's some cashmere. Here's a picture of it on me.

I second (or third?) the lands end turtlenecks. their supima cotton is my fav, might be a bit thicker that you are looking for, but I layer over them easily. I run hot these days, so I cant do my warmer merino thin layering ones

LL bean also has a couple -supima and supima blend layering turtlenecks that you might consider.

I had ordered three of the Lands End turtlenecks: heather grey, ivory, and olive drab. The grey and olive ones are very similar. The ivory one seems thicker, or maybe stiffer. I’m wearing it right now, and it’s comfortable, but thicker, but not as thick as an all cotton one.

I wear a turtle neck almost every day -
Michigan has been frigid this winter! Embarrassed to say I find the basics at TJ Maxx. I know. I pick up a couple every season and they range from French Connection (not tissue but again, frigid) to CK, MK, and weird off brands that tend to be the best! Mostly black and grey. Perfect base layers, agreed, and so effective at showcasing my necklaces and scarves. I have a couple roll collar in beautiful soft knits in regular rotation that I don’t layer over too.

LJP, re your question:
Turtlenecks (and scarves) can actually HIDE wrinkles.

I can't offer any brands as mine are locally made but just chiming in to say I wear a tissue -weight cotton turtleneck everyday under my knits in winter to add some warmth and prevent itchies, and the actual knits do not have to be laundered as often because now they are only a top layer. First it is difficult to dry knits in winter and they last longer, less pilling and stretching out.

This is so funny! I recently wrote of another thread about how I have fallen in love with my tissue weight J Crew turtleneck (thrifted two new condition black ones recently) for precisely the same reason. My skin, almost 10 years post menopause, has decided to become super sensitive and prone to eczema. A thin soft cotton layer is exactly what I crave all the time. Will be following for suggestions and solutions.

You know, I have never owned one of these, and feel like I must be missing out on something. They pop up on seemingly every fashion related feed I see. Don't turtlenecks emphasize loose neck skin and cause the skin to look wrinkly when you wear them? Or am I projecting my greatest fears ....

I don't think I've owned nor worn a turtleneck in at least 20 years.

As Leslie notes, they are 100% merino wool, and cosily warm.

I often wear mine as a solo layer, except in really frigid weather like we are having now.

COS has some excellent ones. I bought two this year, and have 3 or 4 from years past.

It’s a slim fit turtleneck, but not tight. It has a lot of ease to it.

Try Cos, Janet. I follow a blogger (asmallwardrobe) who loves their tissue turtlenecks in merino wool, if you can tolerate that near your skin. They run a bit sheer, so they are best for layering.

I bought the Lands End turtlenecks below via Nordstrom when they were marked down and am wearing the plaid one right now as I type. They are lighter weight and less boxy than the ones I bought decades below. I wouldn't say they are fitted, however. They come in Petite sizes which is a big selling point for me. Lands End charges for returns which is a big reason why I ordered through Nordstrom

This is funny - I broke my no buy January with these lightweight turtlenecks from Lands End. They’re available from Macy’s too. I was looking for heather grey and these were it. They are lightweight and the neck was tall enough, even folded over. I sized up so it wouldn’t be clingy around my middle. They are a blend of 56% cotton, 38% rayon, 6% spandex. I haven’t had them long enough to know how durable they are.

With our recent spate of very cold weather, I find myself reaching for my tissue-weight turtleneck shirts to layer under my sweaters. Besides a little extra warmth, they’re also good for a soft layer on my neck, which seems to be rash-prone in the dry cold air these days (eczema? I’m not sure but need to visit my dermatologist to get some answers).

I have burgundy and olive ones from J Crew factory store a year or so ago, and a black one that Ive had for long enough that the tag is gone. I’d like another one in charcoal or grey. Apparently the J Crew one is popular because it seems to be sold out online.

Has anyone run across a good one? I want *lightweight* and not tight, and a neck that is neither tight nor floppy. No mock turtlenecks for me. High cotton content is good, modal is ok too. A little stretch if it helps with shape retention.

Any suggestions?
