Um... no advice from me because JUST LAST NIGHT I implusively grabbed my scissors and chopped off 1-2 inches straight across trying to get that "I just moved to Paris and I cut my own bob" look. With questionable results.

Sigh.

I am growing my hair out, too. My main strategy is to wait as long as possible between trims (and to be firm with my hair dresser about what I want). So far, so good.

My hair was shorter than a pixie and I'm growing it out all the way as a last hurrah. I plan to keep my bangs so at least THAT won't make me insane. The problem is that my hair is very thick and heavy with a bit of a wave, so it like to flip and get all whoopsy on the sides, and it makes me nuts. Can't wait until I can just pull it back and forget about it!

Also, I look terrible in headbands. : (

gotta agree with JuliJohn a bit. I am growing out mine, wanted a trim on the bangs and she cut off the only little bit of hair that finally had covered my neck. I miss it. I have rarely been so frustrated over hair. 6 more months!

I will throw a monkey wrench in and say NO to trims! It just takes longer to grow that way, and often the haircutter's idea of a trim removes more than you had in mind.

My other tip while growing it out: lower your standards. Many people will admire your lovely head of hair and not have any idea you are growing it out.

Forget the whole idea.

Not the answer you were hoping to hear, I suspect. But it is the one I have most frequently resorted to.

Ugh, I wish. I'm growing out a pixie cut myself, and with my wold curls, I have gone through every possible stage of poofy fluffball, with months left to go before it's anywhere near long enough to pull back in a pony. My only advice is that if you can bobbypin or clip the front, you can at least get some of it out of your face, and change the shape a bit. That's possible as soon as you have a good 2-3 inches.

ETA: And yes, it can help to get trims or new shapes along the way, too. It will take longer to gain length, but you'll look better doing it.

French braid. Doesnt take as much length as a ponytail and seems unexpected enough to look super intentional.

I had trims too. I went from a pretty short over the ears cut to shoulder length. I had it cut about every 7 to 8 weeks to begin with and then went a bit longer between. You have to embrace all the different styles in between before you get to what you're after.

Oh that is so difficult. Is it the bangs that are driving you most batty? Would you consider some sort of band? Some women can really rock them. I just saw one at the pharmacy with a large grey band on her head and it really looked fabulous.

I know it sounds counterproductive, but I always maintained frequent trims to somehow keep a shape.
