<p>SarahD8, you're absolutely right about undies. Natural fibers absorb and hold moisture; their cooling effect comes from moving air hitting the slightly damp fabric. Undergarments don't provide much evaporative cooling because they're covered up, so you might as well go with wicking properties that move moisture outward. Most of my underwear are either synthetic or merino. I have a couple bamboo pairs, but they don't fit me terribly well so I don't reach for them.

<p>Here’s a “don’t”. </p>
<p>Don’t rush down the sidewalk sucking on a cigarette. Even if you’re wearing a great pink / yellow / gold cotton sheath that fits you perfectly, white flats with gold trim, and are carrying the perfect little bag, you will not be a refreshing, pleasant sight. </p>

<p>FWIW I don't like the Airism line nearly as much as Heattech. I've ordered camis from both lines and the cut of the Heattech camis is just better (in contrast to Jules, I found that the Airism camis are TOO covered up -- they show outside the boundaries of my not-very-skimpy tanks whereas the Heattech do not). And the Airism material seems more prone to riding up. I actually don't notice much difference in temperature between the Heattech and Airism camis, so I've actually just been wearing the Heattech ones with my summer clothes -- our summer has been quite mild so far though.</p>
<p>I'm curious about the Airism undies though. I recently read a thread on Twitter, of all places, that made a pretty persuasive case for the idea that wearing cotton panties in hot weather isn't so smart, so I'm rethinking my natural fiber default setting.&nbsp;

<p><b>Jules&nbsp; </b>- that's good to know. My waist is short, too, so I may just return without exchanging. I bought another Airism top that did fit but was waaay too long to be flattering on me. I did also some Airism undies, in the hopes that they'll be quick dry for travel (and cheaper than Ex Officio), and they will probably suit that need. </p>

<p>I bought some Airism tanks too. I don’t find them to be a miracle fabric exactly but they are comfortable. Fit is an issue for me - the large works otherwise but it’s so long on my short waist, coming down to my upper thigh. I also flipped them around front to back to get some actual cleavage coverage (pet peeve with camis, I had a thread about this earlier this summer). They are thin enough that the length isn’t a huge problem, but I probably won’t buy them again.

<p><div><b>Janet&nbsp; </b>- great tips! I know you live in a hot summer climate.... Body Glide is key for me as well. I need it for my feet and my thighs (in skirts and dresses). I have no problem with necklaces but my taste runs on the delicate side anyway.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Lisa - </b>bamboo! That's a great idea. I have to look for that.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Susie </b>- I still have two months of hot weather too, and sometimes we have hot days even in October. So I'd still add to my warm weather wardrobe if I found something good.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Jules </b>- I am trying wicking fabrics too. I'm currently looking into Uniqlo's Airism, but the size I got to start was wrong--I shold have known I need to size up.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>bj1111&nbsp; </b>- Boden is definitely my go-to for dresses with structure and natural fibers. I also like beachlunchlounge, though not all their dresses are structured (can be found at Nordye/the Rack).</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Aquamarine&nbsp; </b>- it can definitely be hard to feel fab in the summer. I prioritize comfort for sure.<br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Top takeways:</div><div>Natural fibers and/or wicking synthetics</div><div>For many - no sleeves (YMMV--others want sun protection)<br /></div><div>Loose silhouettes - but some want at least some structure to feel more polished</div><div>Interesting design details<br /></div><div>Dresses (Boden esp)</div><div>Less reliance on jeans<br /></div><div>Good sandals (metallic!) and accessories/Third Piece</div><div>Birkenstocks!<br /></div><div>Body Glide and other drugstore aids</div><div>Slip Shorts and/or wicking camis<br /></div>

<p>Fabric content is my top priority.. Absolutely no poly or anything with spandex or its eqilivent.&nbsp; This means I have to adjust to the wrinkles of cottons and linens.&nbsp; And I have to iron sometimes. I add statement earrings or sometimes a statement necklace, and interesting sandals.&nbsp;

<p>Sleeveless midi dresses made out of natural fibres. Comfortable sandals, Birkenstock in my case. Also no padded bras, I’m only wearing bralettes at the moment. But I hate the heat. I don’t enjoy summer dressing at all. When it’s this hot I just try to feel comfortable and decently dressed, I honestly don’t think too much about style...

<p><div>Mostly cotton and linen fabrics, try to find things with some kind of interesting design. Graphic tees (if they are lightweight versions), I do wear jean shorts a lot but none of mine are heavy denim and I wear them well above my knees.</div><div><br /></div><div>I nearly always wear a pendant necklace - even into the pool and shower to help keep it clean.
<p>For me, I look to sleeveless and non-constricting items. All natural fibers are a must. My hair also factors into it...for the first time in 30 years, it’s long enough to pull back in a short pony or clipped into a bin, and that has really helped keep me cool.</p>
<p>I feel decidedly unfab in the summer...</p>
<p>ETA: I need structure in my outfits or I feel like a slob, so summer is really difficult. Sometimes I’ll wear a denim jacket (at the very least, carry it around with me) JUST to add some structure despite the heat.

<p>My solutions for very high temperatures are similar to others: breezy fabrics, no lining, dresses or skirts, without sleeves (they make a big difference). My favourite are probably two linen dresses from Boden that I bought a few years ago and are still wonderful, they wear and wash beautifully and can be dressed up or down. When it's very hot I can't stand closed shoes, I usually wear Ecco sandals or Birkenstock Gizeh. My third piece is usually a statement necklace or earrings, but not both.

<p>When it is super hot I can't wear closed shoes or synthetic tops. Yesterday I was stomping around NYC in a very thin cotton dress and overshirt that I tied around my waist most of the time but came in handy for air conditioning. I find a hat also keeps me cooler by creating my own shade, but again it needs to be straw or paper and/or loosely woven.

<p>I still try for an outfit of 3 pieces, but the third may be accessories. I summer sleeveless vests and gillets are good outfit finishers. Interesting patterns and textures are very important. Right now I am wearing cotton white and black windowpane pants with a black mesh sleeveless untucked top with big ruffles in front, a white (bone) vest, big shiny glass earrings that dangle and move when I do, and black Crocs in a Maryjane style<br />

<p>Like you, I have purged all warm weather pieces (mostly tops) that were synthetic. I even had a pair of linen pants that turned out to be a blend of mostly elastane - UGH! so hot....&nbsp; I am afraid I don't have any other tips. I have been cursing the weather for the last two weeks (today we have some reprieve!), but I am following. Thank you for posting the question!

<p>I guess I have three strategies.</p>
<p>1) Outdoor in the sun.&nbsp; A long sleeve cotton or linen shirt with loose pants or shorts and a wide brim hat.&nbsp; Sandals if I can.</p>
<p>2) Work.&nbsp; Midi dresses with sandals are my best.&nbsp; Work is air conditioned so much easier.&nbsp; I don't like layers at my middle in the heat.</p>
<p>3) Parties/entertaining (popular here).&nbsp; If during the day I hunt out the shade and wear a big hat.&nbsp; If at night I like sleeveless outfits.</p>
<p>I tend to up the nail colour.... wear more earrings....</p>
<p>I put all skinny jeans aside for the summer - I might wear looser fit ones.&nbsp; I will wear polyester tops if they are sleeveless (only have one or two).</p>
<p>I definitely prefer sandals....if I wear covered shoes I have to wear socks to avoid both hot feet and smelly shoes......&nbsp; Oxfords, ballet flats and sneakers without socks are best for me in spring and autumn only.

<p>Great advice.l echo ditch the polyester,how anyone can wear that in summer is beyond me.Tencel is a great summer fabric because it’s actually cool to the touch,l have a pair of Navy culottes in tencel and they are great in the heat.My other fave are linen swing tops that float away from the body rather than cling,anything clingy is a definite no no in the heat.

<p>Great advice in this thread already.<br />
I'll add my two cents: one formula that I really like is shorts with a 3/4 sleeve lightweight cotton popover. It's more polished than shorts and a tank, not much hotter, and offers a bit of sun protection (as well as ac protection if you're transiting between outdoors and in).</p>
<p>Here's a couple recent pics of that formula...not great pics per usual but you get the idea.

<p>caftans in cotton or linen.</p>
<p>when i actually have to go to work, dresses.&nbsp; like you, i've been culling polyester.&nbsp; slow work because i haven't been able to find structured dresses in natural fabrics (with natural linings) that are good for work.&nbsp; i might have to give boden more of my money.

<p>I think you pretty much nailed it, Christina! I like the lightest weight woven fabrics I can find: cotton, linen, etc. Sleeves and pant legs are entirely dependent on how much time I anticipate spending in the sun.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The exception is backcountry trips: synthetics are totally worth it for long-term sweat management and how quickly they dry when you're not going to be changing clothes every day or washing between wears. I can do merino up to a certain temperature, but not in extreme heat and humidity (there are really thin technical merino jerseys, but they don't hold up well enough to justify the cost IMO).&nbsp;

<p>I'm with you, but absolutely no pants or sleeves, and fabric content doesn't make a difference to me. I seem to be a lot more heat tolerant than most people I talk to though!<br />
Agreeing that lots of summer things can be justified, due to lots of washing! But they're little and take up less room in drawers

<p>It's hot where I live but not humid so that makes things easier.&nbsp; Not so sweaty.&nbsp; Also, I don't commute, I drive to work, so don't have to deal with long periods of time in the heat.&nbsp; Still, I don't wear jeans in the summer.&nbsp; It's just too hot.&nbsp; I wear loose dresses, skirts, and cotton pants.&nbsp; I love the cropped pant lengths for work and I wear mostly sandals.&nbsp; The only time I put socks on in the summer is to work out.&nbsp; Around the house I wear loose shorts and tanks.&nbsp; I don't like anything constricting when it's hot.</p>
<p>Oh, and while I have A/C in my house, it's an evaporative cooler (swamp cooler) so it only cools to 20-25 degrees below ambient temperature in low humidity.&nbsp; Which is usually fine but it doesn't work as well if the humidity increases or it gets above 100 degrees.&nbsp; Since I don't like arctic A/C anyway, I'm usually comfortable with the swamp cooler.&nbsp; Plus, it adds humidity to the house and it so dry here that it feels good.

<p>Very similar climate/transit lifestyle here in Toronto and I agree with all your points. I’ve also come to accept that summer clothes may be one-season wonders, because of the thinner fabrics, constant washing, and staining from sunscreen etc (clothes are not protected from the environment by outerwear). I also find the long wait between summers (9-10 months) means my tastes and body also change. For all these reasons most of my summer clothes are lower-end. I don’t ‘invest’ in pieces or expect to get much wear beyond one season. I’m thrilled when something does become a multi-year workhorse. The exception would be purses and footwear. I do like to have a summer purse that matches my lighter colour palette.<br />
For comfort I also swear by slip shorts, and I also typically need camis under low cut dresses. A floaty dress over slip shorts and wicking cami is wonderful on a hot day. Body Glide is good to have around for inner thighs and sometimes feet.

<p>Because I go from a/c house to car to office, dressing for work in the summer isn't as difficult for me as weekend wear. There are times when shorts are most appropriate for an activity but I struggle to feel polished in them. And layering is out so shorts + top can be rather boring. Which means that dresses are probably my favorite thing to wear. Unfortunately I only have a few that can be worn casually. In facti, I just ordered a few as I still have at least 2 months of hot weather.</p>
<p>Looks to me like you've got a great summer wardrobe!</p>

<p>Nodding along. My go-to is a dress and colorful sandals. I often have a light cardigan, pashmina, or topper that I bring for work meetings, but I am mostly bare armed in sleeveless tops/dresses. I echo happiness with Boden dresses this summer. I have two work appropriate Boden dresses and one very casual Boden dress that get frequent wear, as well as several other dresses. I am loving jersey materials for their comfort and easy washability. I uterly love my Boden Helena Chino sheath dress (wearing it today, actually). </p>
<p>However, I am about to take my summer vacation to Alberta, Canada, where I am looking forward to cooler temps. I am actually packing two pairs of jeans on advice from family— which I haven’t worn since April. So I appreciate how geographically different our summer looks can be.

<p>Not so much a styling tip, but I started using Anthony No Sweat Body Defense last year when I moved to Texas.<br />
<a href="https://anthony.com/product/no-sweat-body-defense/" rel="nofollow">https://anthony.com/product/no-sweat-body-defense/</a><br />
I am a sweaty person and this really works, keeps me feeling dry and the scent is mild. A tube goes a long way.
