Story of my life.

I sometimes find tops that fit well. Generally it's something fitted over the bust with drape over the hips. As some one mentioned upthread, swing or a-line are usually good descriptors.

The reality is that many of my tops are altered. generally I take in the side seams from the underarm to just below the bustline.
Here is an example of a top the fit me perfectly off the rack.
http://www.kiyonna.com/plus-si.....9/22121805

Is she busty ? Is her rear end flat, or rounded? Is she sway back?

Your description of your mom reminds me of a friend of mine. What flatters her is a untucked but fitted scoop or v-neck top, loosely belted so that the sides of the belt are at the high hip, and the front of the belt dips down to a "v." It is really great when a top like this has side vents or slits. This visually lengthens her short torso. A cardigan, a vest or a jacket over this, and an A-line skirt or pants that have been altered to fit. That belted inner layer seems to be the key to the flattery, and it is very good (although it is counter intuitive) to conceal or minimize a tummy. She also wears chunky necklaces that draw the eye to the face.

What looks terrible on her is anything with a high or tight neck.

She also looks nice in an empire waist dress or top that skims her hips, because that under-the-bust area is smaller. I have also seen younger women with this shape look really cute in an A-line strapless or tank dress, with a thin, short cardigan over it, belted right under the bust.

I am in that situation right now, though I am not short. I am rather average height. I like JJill for tunic tops. She will wear petites probably. But the only other way around this is too have things tailored. So please treat her to that and build the cost into your spending money for her.

I also would avoid anything with darts on top. That makes it really hard to fit.

Good luck !

Kalli, your suggestion is not crazy, in fact I had already thought of that and have even looked in a couple of stores, pregnancy section. But it seems that nowadays pregnant women wear close-fitting clothes. The tops I have seen have more room only in the belly area and the fabric is stretchy.

Angie, she is 153 cm (5 feet) tall.

Diana, yes, I think you are right and the best thing may be to buy a top that is “almost” right and then get it altered by a taylor (as we are not good at sewing).

Fern and Kalli, I do not think we have those stores in Spain. I am under the impression that the plus-size fashion industry is not as developed in Spain as it is in some other countries. However, I will have a look at the online sites you have suggested to see if I get some ideas.

Thanks to all!

Try Eileen Fisher?
They make T-shirts and dresses that are very A-line. The shirts might be the "swing" style.
You might consider getting button downs and having them tailored (or you or your mom could do it yourselves if you are handy with a needle.). Specifically, you could add side vents (or lengthen existing ones) so that the shirt no longer pulls over the hip. This is a lot easier than tailoring down the top part.

Um, I guess most people might strike me down for this but what you are describing is what maternity tops are. I might strike myself down for suggesting it.

Outside of that, have you tried a shop like torrid? One of my friends is sort of built like that and she loves that store. I go in with her all the time.

Hello, I want to buy some clothes (tops specifically)
for my mother. She is short and pear-shaped. She has gained weight over the
years and her widest area is the "high hip" area, just below her waist. She is very frustrated because it is so
difficult to find anything that fits and she has almost given up. I want to
help her and I am looking for suitable tops, but it really seems vey difficult.
We want something that covers her rear, but what fits her shoulders is terribly
narrow for her high-hip area, and what fits that area (only XL sizes and not
all of them) is huge and unflattering on her upper body. I guess she needs some
extreme A-line tops, but where to find them?

Any tips? Thanks!
