BTW; just wanted to add not all cameras respond to remotes - mine was $21 for my DSLR.

Welcome Lori. You can post photos now using Photobucket so you don't have to wait until you are 'activated' in the forum.
I had lost my camera instructions but easily found the self-timer know how by googling.
I am a newbie too and find it instructive to keep a photo inventory of my outfits. I see them much more clearly in a photo than in the mirror. I cull and adjust at this stage. When I do post WIW's I learn significantly more from the forum's response than my own.

these are good tips, I am newbie on this too and struggling with my phone. I made an envelope pocket I can drop it into and tape that to the wall (mirror) after setting the timer. But I have terrible lighting so I am thinking to use my work lamp at the next attempt. the worst part of the phone is the quality. Will see if better with more light

Modgrl's tips are great.

I also recommend investing in a tripod and a remote for your camera. I don't have any convenient sized counters or rooms in my tiny tiny house, so figuring out where to put my camera was really tough. Once I got a tripod, I had more flexibility with locations and could set my camera at exactly the right height.

I also use a remote trigger for my camera, which cost about $10. For me, at least, it's much easier to use than the camera's timer.

Mirror shots are never easy to get right, because the camera's always blocking a part of your outfit and the mere act of holding up the camera can distort your outfit, which is a big deal when asking for fit advice.

Give the self timer another go. It will take a better picture than trying to capture a dark mirror closet picture where you are sure to be in constant shadow.

There is a self timer app on the iphone, FramexFrame and GorillaCam are two that I have used but honestly it is really hard to get a good set up with an iphone. Try it with a camera.

I put my camera on a book or bowl or something on my kitchen table, and then stand back about 8-10 feet. That seems to capture a good head to toe shot in almost the correct perspective. Looking at this morning's wiw is making me realize I could raise the camera a bit more like to counter height. So if you have the space in your house, you can pop the self timer camera on your kitchen counter. I set the timer to take 5 pictures, usually at least one of them is ok. Also, relax, smile, elongate your neck and put one of your hands at your hip. The "relax" part is the hardest for me because I usually have about 10 seconds to take a picture before my kids interrupt me. Stress while taking a wiw definitely shows up on your face, in your stance and others' potential judgement of your wiw... If I am in a bad mood or don't feel great about an outfit, others are sure to hate it because my wiw's will always show a scowl on my face. This is not a good look for anybody!

I've been pondering this myself. I think I'm going to need to set up the tripod and figure out how to actually use the self-timer on my camera. Not sure how this will work for an iphone, but I have seen tripod gizmos for them so I'm sure there is a way to do it or a product you can use. Maybe try searching on Instructables for ideas?

The full-length mirror is inside the bedroom closet door, so no dragging is possible. It's just too dark in there to get good photos (plus then everyone has to see my messy closet!).

I didn't think about the self-timer - I was using my iphone. I've never been good at using the self-timer... I feel like I spend ages getting the right set-up and then I can't seem to get good photos with it anyway. But I should give it another try.

Hi! I just introduced myself in the Who's Who thread (my name is Lori). I can't post photos yet, which is OK because I can't find a way to take any good ones! I have one full-length mirror in my house and the placement and lighting of it are awful. I work from home and spend most of the day by myself, so no help there. Any tips for other things I might try? Thanks!
