How frustrating. While knits do snag if they get rubbed repeatedly, having this happen on the second wearing seems like poor quality. Is it worth the hassle of trying to exchange or return?. If not, you could try weaving together the hole with embroidery thread and needle.

It happens ALL the time for me too. Usually due to countertop leaning, which is likely why I first embraced the semi-tuck. My only solution is to always wear an apron, always tuck the front and only wash delicate knits with other delicate knits (which is usually not practical for me so I just deal with it). Some can be mended of course with patience and a matching thread. But for the most part, I've decided to try to steer away from extremely thin knits in the future.

I have had this happen to a number of a tees- mostly the "slub knits" and I read that these have shorter fibers. I think there are "micro-breaks" going on in contact points (belt line area rubbing against waistbands, counter tops, seat belts, etc) and if the fibers are short or weak (like slub knits, thin knits)- holes appear. Very frustrating as I have tossed a number of tees that I really loved (and carefully wash!), after just a few wears.

Talk about aggravating!

like rabbit said, using a bit of Fray Check or similar will at least keep the hole from spreading. I wonder what's behind it, too - even if it's happening in the same place since you're rubbing against something, it doesn't happen to ALL of your knits, or to the same extent.

It's interesting to me since i sew and i've noticed none of the knits i've sewn myself have developed these type of holes.....it makes me wonder about the quality of fabric manufacturers are using, and how they treat the fabric and garments in the manufacturing process. These little holes are notorious for showing up along seams when an old, dull needle was used - the needle catches on and tears the fibers. But usually these holes won't show up right away, it takes a few wears or washes....so i suspect some of these holes are due to inappropriate handling before purchase.

Very frustrating. steph

Yes I get them from time to time high up too, like on the upper chest area. I assumed it was from my cat's claws, but maybe it's happening during the wash as I'm not sure what else would abrade them at that spot. I did sew one of them closed on a favorite kick around shirt but it kind of just looked worse :( . A tiny spot of fabric glue on a toothpick on the other hand... hmm I might try that with a shirt that is otherwise fine except for the one pinprick hole.

It's good to know I'm not alone. I had never thought of things like leaning against a counter, or seat belts, or silver fish and earwigs. I thought perhaps mine was from from tucking and semi-tucking. But this particular hole is higher. Maybe it's from carrying a drink tray at work. In an effort to get more use from my wardrobe, I decided I'd wear it to work today. I wouldn't mind if it was a year old and getting a hole, but it's less than a month old and like I said, second wearing.

I will certainly be thinking of all of these things from now on.

Ugh. It happens to mine too. I found that the primary culprits were 1. the agitator and other items in the wash cycle, which I minimized by washing on a gentler cycle and putting things in a lingerie bag and 2. the fabric softener bar that I used in my dryer, which I removed. And, of course, treating more delicate knits as hand-wash items pretty much takes care of it, if I can find the time to do it!

I had this happen a few times in the same spot, until I figured it was a button on the seat belt in my car doing it. Some little cover had fallen off and that button became sharp enough to make holes.

Sigh. SO frustrating.

This has happened to me a couple of times for the reason Mo said -- somehow rubbing against my jeans button or something while I was at the kitchen counter. So I have started trying to remember my apron more regularly.

It has also happened to me a few times simply because...of...well...nothing! I figured the quality of the knits must have been poor and wrote off the tee shirts as a loss.

I do think washing in the delicate cycle in a bag and laying flat to dry helps prolong the life of most knits. But it's not a solution to all of these problems.

The thin fluid lovely feeling knits can get holes very quickly. Once I got them from wearing a cross body bag. If the laundry is the culprit, you can put all your knits in fabric bags (Target). I think more often it's just a mystery--DD got one in a brand new top from Nordies.

This durability problem is one reason I can't get excited about knits being "the" top of the season, even though for decades I was a knitwear girl through and through.
