Thanks everyone!

Lyn, I just like shades of blue. They’re easy to match in my wardrobe, accordingly. There was no grand design.

Suz, unsurprising! I did get the Je T’aime bag but expect to use it for evenings out. I brought it to the opera the other night. I couldn’t stop thinking about it! You have a nice size collection - seems like most things can receive wear, but you have some variety.

Oh, I'm drooling over your collection. Also, as usual, our taste overlaps...see some of my bags, below.... :)

I can't help too much beyond what others have already said re the thinning process. It won't be easy.

ETA -- I really like the Je T'aime bag but I mainly use it for "going out." Because it's quite heavy for a bag of its size. I like that it does fit sunnies, wallet, phone, etc (or you can carry cards right in the slots), and it is cross body. And because it is structured it looks a bit dressier. But it's not big enough for daily use for me and the weight means I don't reach for it as much as the knapsack or even my larger hobos.

ETA 2: I was a one-bag-a-season person before YLF but now I own several. I'm still on the lookout for my ideal structured satchel/ tote, though. My current collection:

Winter:

Large burgundy hobo, RM.

Dove grey knapsack, RM

Leopard & black clutch (seldom used) BR

Je T'aime red crossbody, RM

Coach mustard shoulder bag

Summer

Large white hobo, RM

Dove grey knapsack, RM

Black and white clutch (seldom used)

Je T'aime red crossbody

Coach mustard shoulder bag

Your collection is beautiful. As much as I admire a pretty bag, I'm a bag minimalist. I keep all my bags as lightweight and functional as possible, and change them out infrequently. I've got:

one large black bag that can be shoulder or cross body. I use as cross body. I initially bought it for travel, but never changed back to a smaller bag after a trip last year. Oddly, it seemed to distribute the weight of what I was carrying better than a smaller bag did.

one small black cross body bag. Black. Lightweight fabric. Lots of compartments.

One small black and brown cross body bag. Has been dormant for a while.

One small mustard cross body bag I had almost forgotten about.

A couple of evening bags and a colourful summery beaded wristlet bag that I might pull out once or twice in the summer for going out.

I have been thinking I might need a sturdy tote.
I wish you much success paring your lovely grouping down to a size that works for you and gives you the mix of function and style you want. Enjoy them in good health!

You have a great collection of bags, Christina! I am not a bag person (my weakness is jackets ), but I have a few (I have the same KS as your pink one, but in a tangerine orange color).

I agree with you on totes being difficult to carry due to slippage and if it doesn't go with your wardrobe it's smart to consign it. Also, any bag that is too small to hold your things has gotta go! I appreciate your collection. The peacock green Kate Spade is such a happy fun color.

I've enjoyed this thread very much. Photos of your bags brought me great pleasure. Comments were very interesting.

avicennia -- I adored leather bags but over time found them too heavy for my work commute. I switched to nylon (Rebecca Minkoff backpacks for weekends and Longchamp totes for work days). Those bags have been a back saver. The Longchamp are much more useful for my life style in terms of size, but sometimes I want the weight equally distributed across my shoulders and then I grab a backpack.

ChristinaF -- Your bag collection is beyond gorgeous. I am a ruthless purger of clothing items, but purging bags is quite hard for me. Some bags will never be purged, even if never used, because they symbolize very important moments in my life. Your idea of gifting your gently used bags to your Mother is brilliant (especially since she loves bags as well).

I very much understand the need to have sufficient storage space. This has always been a problem for me. I don't know what your situation is, but I line my totes, backpacks, and briefcase along the bottom of my reach-in closet. They are all stored upright in dust bags. Their shape is maintained by stuffing them with tissue or bubble wrap. I have a hanging "sweater" thing that I use to store smaller bags. Each bag gets its own slot so I can see them easily and they are visually pleasing to the eye. The strange thing is that I cycle through the bags stored on the floor, but rarely use the bags stored in the hanging sweater thing. I think their usefulness to me has passed, yet I can't part with them.

Thank you for sharing the photos with me.

JAileen, I do use small bags on the weekends. I have an outsize collection for that purpose, but it makes me happy and I guess that means they will all stay nice for longer. I agree that hand-carry only bags are useless to me. I need to be hands free.

avicennia, Rebecca Minkoff does make some unlined bags, but they often have heavier elements. Not always, though. I also like nylon bags for their lightness. Good luck!

Well, Jane, my collection is double yours, so I for one see no need for you to feel sheepish! That said, it's is very dependent on the storage you have, as you say. Mine barely fit, but I will be moving within a year and expect to have more space that I can organize better. I don't want to start out needing a separate closet for my bags, though!

RobinF it makes sense to invest more for daily use bags. If you now know that you would use pale pink, that sounds like a good investment to me. My bags are all pretty nice, but generally have been gifts or things I've stumbled across at stores that discount these things, plus a few sample sales. For my large navy bag, I did look around for a while with the color and size requirements in mind until I came across that one at a sample sale.

notsaf, I get bored easily! I have to be strict about rotating through these so that I don't feel like I need to buy even more bags. That said, thinking through this has made me realize I should focus on culling the big ones a bit since they take up more space and get rotated less frequently. So I will probably pass on that woven tote after all, since it's very large and only useful about 4 months per year. I know too many options are stressful for some, so I'm glad your collection works for you, which is the important thing.

Wow! These are clearly wardrobe pets for you. I am pretty ruthless. I have:

- one evening clutch
- one small crossbody satchel
- one fancy-ish crossbody bucket bag that can fit a laptop
- one tote
- one fancy-ish backpack

All black. That's it. My mind would boggle at the variety you have!

Wow, gorgeous collection! I don't have a lot of bags and most of my older ones aren't a good quality anyway so I don't mind getting rid of them. I tend to buy neutrals that go with most things so I don't have to switch around often and can justify paying more these days. But I sure love looking at these beautiful colors! I recently got a pale pink satchel from T.J. Maxx that was inexpensive because I wasn't sure how much use it would get but I am quite enjoying it and might have to look for an upgraded version.

It’s tough culling bags. And your bag collection is beautiful. It takes me a long time to buy a new bag. I’ve a whole deep shelf with five baskets / tubs of bags. I’m happy with them all but I do feel a little sheepish about the number of bags I have (maybe 15 - but I ought to count - job for the weekend!). When I’d resolved the storage issue, I felt easier about the number of bags I have,

Not very helpful comments but I wish you well with the review.

Christina, I don’t have a favorite brand, and I can’t think of a brand that is consistently light weight. Since Angie’s post about carrying two bags, I’ve been distributing the weight between a cross body and a shopper, which helps quite a lot. I don’t think light weight nylon bags like Longchamp look sufficiently polished for a professional setting. So I look for unlined leather bags with streamlined construction and minimal hardware. I prefer tote/shopper bags for laptop, notes, notebook, etc. For the blazing summer months I have an artisan-made shopper bag woven from palm leaves (I bought in Mexico). It has leather handles so I’ve convinced myself it looks polished enough for casual work days. But the long and short is that I’m always on the lookout for light weight bags.

You have a beautiful collection of bags. I hate getting rid of bags unless they annoy me, then poof! Small bags are practically useless to me. The ideal bag is a nice size, has a secure closure and a long strap for crossbody wear if necessary. I have a few bags that need to be hand carried. They just don’t get used.

rachylou, I have to say that I kind of prefer my backpacks at times now that those are trendy. If I have to carry a lot, such as on a day trip on the weekend (long train or subway ride, where I want my iPad or something), I go to those. The nylon RM backpacks are great for that purpose.

zaeobi, wow, thanks for this detailed commentary. I do keep one small, lgithweght bag in my purses; something I got at the Container Store that's meant for travel. I like it because it holds a lot but doesn't add weight. I like to keep a lot of over the counter medication with me, just in case--painkillers, allergy pills, stomach upset pills etc. Plus tissues, hand sanitizer, any cosmetics.... I definitely like the color ranges of my bags, though I will miss the deep pink of the heavy KS bag I want to consign.

jessikams, clutches are the worst. A lot of my bags can be converted to clutches, but I don't wear them that way. I may be down to one true clutch, strictly for very dressy occasions outside the context of the city--weddings, an annual ball I attend, etc. I couldn't ever fathom carrying them around on the subway either.

avicennia, do you have any preferred brands?

Small update - I pulled out the green Kate Spade bag and created a find. it's bigger than I remembered, and the shade of green is a peacock I find delightful. It's also very different in look and feel than the forest green metallic bag, so I don't think they split wears (not that splitting wears is my main concern here). It holds my insert bag described above), though not much else. It can stay for now, since it's easy to store but of a more versatile size than I remembered.

Just want to applaud your colorful bag collection. Most people have such boring purses! I particularly like patterned or two-toned bags, and it looks like you do too :)

I periodically cull bags, and get rid of the ones that are damaged or no longer fitting my functional needs. Also I’ve totally lost patience with clutches. In an urban lifestyle they are just so impractical- even for a “fancy” night out I am still walking and taking the subway, usually, and so a bag with no strap drives me bananas. Yes, they store easily, but who needs ‘em? Nobody will even SEE a clutch in the 3 seconds it takes me to enter a venue, put it on my seat, and forget about it for the rest of the night.

Ok rant over.

I just went through a bag cull, & went through a similar thought process. The very first thing I did was buy a very small 'phone bag' that holds only my bare essentials & can be worn as either a crossbody or bum bag (I'm a teacher, & therefore need to be hands free at all times). You may have different needs but, for me, this was much more practical than starting off with an internal purse organiser (though I may buy one now that I know the sizes & dimensions of the bags I wish to keep).

My rationale from there was that any other bag I buy has to be big enough to fit my 'essentials' bag (bar any tiny evening clutches, of course). I also considered other practical aspects that were dealbreakers for me (must be lightweight, have multiple pockets & an adjustable removeable crossbody strap. Finally, any travel or airport bags must come with a zipper that I can padlock - preferably a double zip closure).

The next step for me was colours. I was recently 'diagnosed' as a deep & warm autumn, meaning that I need contrast in my looks to keep them 'grounded'.

This of course was a problem for me, since I love to wear colour but neutrals not so much. My solution to this was to get my phone bag in a neutral burgundy shade, & then buy my other bags accordingly. Since I don't wear many neutrals in my clothing, it made sense for me to use shades like burgundy, khaki & chocolate brown as my 'accessories' colour - you may be the other way around. I have one bag that is a chartreuse/ yellowish green colour, but I don't wear that colour much in my outerwear so I think I'm safe lol.

Sorry for writing an essay haha but my point is that the bag culling process is highly individual. There's no universally right or wrong answer to how many bags you should keep - for me, it's no more than 10. Figuring out your dealbreakers first (like storage space) can help, though.

I love that two-tone in the small bag collection. I used to have a lot of bags but I got ruthless. Purses are not exactly ergonomic. Everything heavy went. Everything with a small opening. Anything that slipped off the shoulder. Anything with double handles (one is always in the way, flopping about).

I am also drooling over this bag, which I just saw in person, but I'm pretty sure I have to let an additional bag go (than the ones in my post) to justify it, especially as I also got the lavender crossbody. This is navy but reads as purple in person.

Thanks, Mirjana! It's tough to narrow them down but I'm glad I started to think about it, at least.

Taylor, I do have some favorites but I agree that they are all unique and tell their own stories. I can and have passed some on to my mom, who is a bag person too but without the same budget I have. I've also bought her bags of her own, of course, but it's always gratifying to gift her with one of my gently used ones.

Sarah and Angie- YES, functionality and related to that, size, are my main criteria right now. I am less fussed for the immediate future about the "small" bags. I want to pull out some of the larger stored ones to evaluate them better--I have to go into that area of my closet anyway to get the big pink bag, which I know I need to pass on.

As for color, I think I will whittle down by shade rather than color family when it comes to blue/teal. I don't consider cerulean, teal navy etc to all be the same color, for this purpose. The small green KS bag I have is getting the side eye since I have a metallic green bag, but beyond having gold hardware they both feel very different. I probably don't need a teal and a cobalt tote bag, though - but again, I'd have a hard time choosing which one to pass on, unless I find that the teal one is much heavier.

Sarah, the colorblock bag will definitely be fun as the weather warms up. You're correct in that it is a slam dunk with many of my items. It's also about due to rotate out of deeper storage.

Joy, you are absolutely right about weight. I also need to use crossbody bags, except sometimes in summer. it's all about what I can carry around the city.

I never used to be a bag lady pre YLF, but now. I carry multiple bags every day and change them up almost daily. There has been evolving from smaller crossbody to totes to combinations. I use them all. Small evening bags get the least use.
You have a gorgeous collection. Good luck with editing some out. Weight is a good way as I have never wished I had a heavier bag, especially when doing lots of walking.

Ok I am NOT a bag girl so all the designer/model names here pretty much read like organic chemistry equations to me, lol.

But overall I would say that winnowing through functionality is a good strategy -- which bags are too heavy, too small, to large for their purpose, too fussy to use, etc.

Then I would consider them by color: where do you have duplication by function? (And do the "when would I choose X over Y?" test.)

Then I would consider them by size and/or style and do the same.

That colorblock bag (I think your first designer purchase?) seems like it could be really fun with the current 80s revival. I could see pattern-mixing it especially with summer items, like your J Crew Liberty floral skirt from last year.

Janet, the RM Avery bag I propose to get rid of has that size problem. It is too narrow and rigid (saffiano leather) to hold a phone and a wallet, and I need it do both to be a night out bag. Now I have a better sense than I used to of what will work before I buy it.

Thanks, Sterling! I love my wardrobe pets, as Angie calls them, but it makes it hard to choose among them. The too-heavy KS bag (sadly, it was a gift) has to go find someone else to love it, for sure. If I drove a car, it would be great, but isn't for my walking lifestyle. That was one of my first nice bags, and I've learned since then not to buy anything as heavy. I also don't need to carry as much nowadays, except my bag of stuff I carry daily (pills, toiletries etc) and a wallet. I like the bag to be roomy enough to stuff a lunch tote bag or some Tupperwear into at the end of the day, though.

When I started to purge my beloved bag collection, weight was the primary consideration. Some of my heavier Coach Briefcases were just too heavy to carry all the way from the parking deck.

The second consideration was whether the bag met my current needs (i.e., carrying laptops and files).

It was hard purging those bags but I made sure they went to people that would love them as much as I did.

It think that's a solid and sensible plan for thinning the collection. I know that any bag that's too small for the intended purpose just drives me nuts, as does anything that's too tricky to access (narrow openings, flaps with tricky closures, etc). There are lots of fab bags out there that are functional too! You have a great collection.

Here are some larger work bags. Some are on the small side but I often use a regular shopping tote bag if I need more stuff. There's also a KS saddle bag and a dome shaped rose gold bag, and a black fringe hobo bag by some Italian leather brand.

Here are some small bags--the lavender is new. My pace of buying bags has slowed immensely since I left grad school and got a real job; it was a giddy spree for the first two years. So I'm not fussed about adding a new bag.

I also have a small green KS bag (similar to the pink bag above), another KS bag with a red and black floral print, and an RM MAC in a glazed light blue leather, and a navy RM MAC Mini with gunmetal hardware.

This cerulean and white one gets less wear but is my first designer bag so I want to keep it :)

The green KS bag may be on the chopping block, but I feel like I should wear it again. I am off KS a bit, but it provides some variety from my usual RM look.

I favor a lot of shades of blue and green - to me that is not color duplication.
