Suz, didn't you have long hair back in the beginning and then you shortened it? So voice of experience, right?

Stephanie, I agree with the others that you and your hair are both very pretty and your hair looks shiny and healthy. I'm a fan of shorter hair on me, but it feels natural and comfortable on me. If you want to cut your hair, I agree with the others that it will be important to first tackle a little style definition. Hair is an easy change, but if it doesn't match your style, it won't feel good. So for it to feel natural and comfortable on you, you should start slow and start defining what your style is.

For what it's worth (FWIW), "defining your style" and "style descriptors" always seems easy to write, but I know (and everyone else here too, I promise) that it isn't! So, I'd like to second the recommendation of a pinterest board. If you go through and pin looks that you like, it helps show what appeals to you. Sometimes you will know exactly what you like about it (look at that great bag!) and sometimes you won't have any idea (I just love this whole look! The feel, the colors, everything!). If you note that reaction in the pin text, it might give you insights into what you like about it. Then share the board with the forum. I'm amazed by how often the forum can immediately identify details of your style that you might not see. You might love color. You might hate color. You might love neutrals and the addition of color with accessories like scarves and bags. You might be completely into boho chic hippy chick loveliness or you might be very preppy. You might want very girly looks. Or you might love boyish androgynous looks. A pinterest board would help us see that.

I echo what others have said. You have beautiful hair. I am partial to long hair and love long healthy hair. I have long layers in my hair which really helps create movement. I also have bangs. Bangs are great but are also high maintenance.

My suggestion would be to go through pictures and decide what you like and what your hair can do. Finding a good hairstylist is also important. Ask around and approach someone on the street if you need to. I would go up to someone who has the style I like and ask them who does their hair. It has happened to me and I take it as a compliment. I drive 3 hours to go to see my hair stylist since I moved. She is very good and understands my hair.

Personally, your hair isn't dated or a bad style . . . more like it lacks any definitive style. However, without knowing what looks you like and your lifestyle I would be tempted to encourage you to look at pinterest and at outfits on this site and see what appeals. I might be tempted to update your makeup and eyewear first --- at the very least I'd make an appointment with a makeup consultant at Sephora, Mac or a dept. store to try new looks and maybe hit up several designer or trendy eyewear shops in your location --- updating those two features in ways you love will help you know what to do with your hair.
Definitely a pretty lady : )

Beautiful pic!

Maybe a good way to approach this is to ask what your overall style goals are. Do you have any adjectives that describe your overall style? Certain hairstyles work better for particular style personas. For instance, if you really enjoy elegant dressing, getting a supershort, piecey cut might make it difficult to fully express your style persona, since this type of cut is generally seen as more informal.

Zibbets also has a good point. I know that one of the forum members, Alassë, has quite long hair and has decided to use her hair as an accessory. So, depending on the look she wants for the day, she will wear it up or down or styled in a certain way. You might want to still keep some length if you want to experiment a lot with different ways of styling your hair to see what effect it has on your overall outfit.

I've also had LOOOONG hair in the past. To the waist. I've gone relatively shorter, which means mid back or so these days.
I've debated a lot shorter, but my BF has mentioned I might regret it. Not that he would mind either way, but that he thinks I would regret it.
What are the goals you have for updating your style, and how do you see your hairstyle fitting in with that vision?

Several years ago, I had hair longer than yours, cut it much shorter (with layers), and then regretted it. I've been slowly, painstakingly growing it back out ever since. I'm not saying you shouldn't go short, but I'd definitely make sure you're doing it for you, not because you feel pressured in some way (like I did).

As others have commented, you have gorgeous long hair that looks like it might be naturally straight. Have you colored it at all? (I can't quite tell from your photos whether the lightening toward the ends is due to color, sun-bleaching, or shading from the light.) The main thing I would recommend, if you're trying to improve the overall appearance, is to remove any damage.

If you're tired of having it around your face, there are a lot of accessories that can help with that. I use a kind of clip called the flexi-8 that comes in a variety of sizes and doesn't snag my hair. There are larger ones that will let you do a full updo in less than five minutes, and smaller ones that can be used for a half-up or to pull the sides back.

Like the other commenter said, I'd love to hear whether you want a change more for lifestyle or convenience, too... that's the main thing that has tempted me to go shorter.

Your are gorgeous and so is your hair. I agree with the others that you need to figure out what will work for you. I wouldn't do anything too drastic right off the bat. there are a few websites that you can upload a photo and try on different hair styles. It could help you rule out a few.

Wow, you are stunning! With beautiful long, shiny hair to boot! You could really pull off many hairstyles.

Maybe we should start with....
What hairstyles do you personally gravitate towards? What do you love on others?
How short would you want to go?
What is your morning routine like - do you have time to style, or are you more of a wash and go person?

Sometimes it's helpful to gather pics of what you personally love. It could be revealing.

Maybe it's time for a pinterest account, if you dare....
