I can totally relate. I'd be feeling a blissful sense of relief at being between seasons and not feeling pressured to add to my wardrobe at the moment if I hadn't stumbled across the $300 pendant that's stressing me out right now. At least you recognize that you do need a break and you can correct your course. At any rate, you're not alone, and I don't think it has anything to do with being empowered vs unempowered.

It actually has felt really good to do it. I have been focused on weeding, mending, and organizing. Knowing that this ban is self-imposed and that I will be able to shop again one day has made it better, and I feel like when I do go back to buying it will hopefully be with sharper vision and refined purpose.

I understand. I was starting to feel this today when some boots I was watching on eBay started to get in a bidding war. I had to decide if I really needed the boots or was caught up in the hunt of an elusive item. I decided I can do without heeled OTK boots until next winter. I had started a shop my budget for the New Year and just the concentration on the numbers had me focused on shopping that much more. Ironic. I may have to join you in stepping away for several weeks.

Recently I find myself shopping when bored, or upset, rather than just for fun or because I need something. Not earth-shattering, but I feel out of control when I do it. Even when I buy nothing's that expensive - thrifting or just bargain-hunting - but I don't like the feeling of "must buy, must buy" that I hear in my head.

This kind of thing seems to go in phases - I'll be OK for a while and feel in control, enjoy shopping and stay in my budget, and then I just get off and have to take a break from it all for a while. It's kinda like dieting - too bad we have to eat (and wear clothes) otherwise an abstinence approach would work well.

Seems like such a typical "unempowered woman" problem which isn't how I like to think of myself, but if the shoe fits (and I buy it, heh)....
