I think he either just reached a boiling point on this or something else prompted him to speak out. And Clara T is right, he has been angered for years at Project Runway designers who complain about the real women challenges. Gradfashionista, I wonder about how all this changing bodies affects self esteem.

I see the average height increasing significantly in my and my DH's family. And ethnic makeup certainly affects the average size of a population in an area. So, there are the healthy gains in size, as on average, size tends to increase as height increases, and the unhealthy gains in weight due to other factors, which also lead to increased size.

Personally, I wish someone had told me as a child and teen that part of the reason that I weighed more and wore a bigger size was because I was taller than average. At some point I just thought I'm large, I've always been large, and I'll always be large. I didn't realize I was just a little overweight. And the girls I was comparing myself to hadn't developed yet, and were on the slight end. And then I didn't notice when I really gained weight because, hey, I was large.
I took a look at some of my old size large clothes from when I was younger and I was shocked because they were not clothes someone "large" would wear. But I thought I was huge then.

I still love Tim. Better to speak out now than never (and for years he's been fussing at project runway designers who turn up their noses at real people).

People have gotten a lot bigger. The last time I could wear vintage was middle school. It's not just fat. People were shorter, tinier. Better (early?) nutrition and medical care I suspect.

Where you live also matters. My uncle the doctor says we don't see the big people where we live, that everyone talks about. I think that's true. I swear people get taller every 30 miles inland you go...

Hmm, I keep seeing this average size 16-18 floated around, but I'm beginning to suspect that the median (and standard deviations) are closer to what's offered in retail sizing. The skewed sizing and fetishization of thinness used to bother me a lot, but I'm more disturbed now by how prevalent facial and plastic surgery have become (e.g. Google before and after of Bella Hadid, Renne Zelleweger, etc.). Nose jobs, Botox and fillers seem to be quite common where I'm permanently based.

He's a convert, plain and simple. If we're always going to be chained to our past, what's the point of evolving? Better late than never.

Hmm, I'm getting tired of him. He's been quite loud about this recently but what about all those years before now? It's not as if women suddenly became overweight at the end of last year or something.
