Hmm, interesting approaches.
None are super sentimental. More that some I selected as being the closest I had found to not looking so clip-like, so , not as long to find again . I've tossed over half my collection is a types, and maybe even now there are on me 3-4 pairs I like the best.
I'm in this odd zone in my editing, of sometimes only needing to whittle down numbers and meh items, vs. Clearing more radically to be open to a new phase, leaving the past behind.

Hi, Unfrumped. Another unpierced one here. I've been looking at my earrings recently, too, keeping in mind Angie's observation (for all earrings) that bold dangles and small stud-type earrings still look current, but medium-sized shapes, especially clips, tend to look frumpy. It's not difficult to toss the costume jewelry blob or button clip-ons, but what about better jewelry and vintage or signed pieces? For me, this includes some beautiful Mexican silver clip- & screw-back designer-marked earrings from the 1940s. I will not get rid of these, because they are either classic enough (plain silver hoops) or unique enough (bold wrought-silver orchids) to stand apart from trends. I also have some of my mother's quality 1950s costume pieces--rhinestone starburst clips, etc. These I find work quite well with today's oversize tops and narrow pants, that mid-century Mad Men look. I've also clipped favorite sparkly earrings through the buttonholes of preppy shirt collars to tweak the boyish look. All that said, I do find myself wearing earrings--jewelry in general, really--less and less these days.

If they are sentimental or something you really like but don't feel that you want to wear as clip ons, how about making/ having made a statement necklace using them? You might try just clipping one or more on a chain or leather cord to get the idea of what it might look like.

Hi Unfrumped. I wear earrings because they are part of my signature style. I have pierced ears though and once I insert the earrings I am oblivious to it. How do your clip-ons feel to you? Are they comfortable? Do you like them? I was say keep them and see if you wear them. If you don't then you can donate them later. I frequently put a date on items like this. For example, if I don't wear these earrings by December 2015, I will donate them. That gives you ten months to assess and you know that in December you will have to make a decision. I hope this helps.

Iisap, no pierced ears. I meant I have some in which the clip concept is less obvious, such as part of a circle style , or magnetic, and also they don't look button-y.
There was an interesting thread on earrings recently but I wasn't sure if it dealt with only pierced styles vs. the fraught clip- on!

I'm trying to understand what you've written here and am a little confused - do you have pierced ears? (you mention hoops and dangles) If so, why bother with clip-on earrings? Button style clip-ons are pretty dated, unless they are a special, dressy, vintage-y looking earring . I think unless they are really valuable and contain real stones, I'd move on.

I was able to separate out most of my collection as not being close to.my style and needs without regArd to the underlying issue of clip-on status.
My final dilemma is that later on I got some that were less obviously ( in my mind, ha!) and less button style, maybe a small dangle or hoop. With short hair hand long neck, earrings can be a good look for smart casual or fun.
Here's the rub- I don't hAve much the-heck-with - you confidence in this. If clip-ons of any type send a total frump message,I would feel dumb. Funny how I do not have that issue with things like wearing hose when others won't.
So I haven't decided whether to just close that chapter or whether selected ones along with modern outfits could be part of myself style.
(At one time I thought I would have fun with vintage costume jewelry, but now I think my age precludes any irony there!)
These don't take up much room , so holding zone works , and wear some in next month or so and see how I feel, but I don't TRUST that, really.
Sorry to be such a sheep, but would be interested in advice here.
