Spot on. I think they maybe inspire us to be nicer and more tender to each other.
(Though I don’t tackle my husband and aggressively groom him. Most of the time.)
He’s eating, and feeling better today, but this was hard on him. He’s wanting lots of cuddles.

Thanks, Kari. I think it’s so interesting how animals relate and care for one another.. They do rely much on instinct , and a sick or injured animal will draw prey in the wild, yet they seem to overcome those instincts and react with compassion.more often. Unlike humans often times unfortunately.
So glad Pongo is eating ...always a good sign .

Taylor, with rats - as prey animals - it kind of depends. They are very social and communal. When Pongo first came home from both surgeries, we had him just with Lolly, our very old rat, because she’s slow-moving and not likely to “groom” his stitches like our younger girls - and he’s always loved her. She was a little scared, and they do have an instinct not to be around sick or dying animals if they feel it makes them unsafe. After all, he was gone all day and came back smelling weird and feeling crummy (until pain meds kicked in), plus we had to move them to a smaller, shorter cage to enforce inactivity during healing, so it’s unfamiliar. After about 30 min Pongo started feeling better and Lolly relaxed. They have been cuddling off and on like normal.

Young girls will stay isolated for a bit as they tend to aggressively groom, and might accidentally hurt Pongo.

He’s feeling a bit better this morning and has a good appetite. Yay!

I really hope Pongo recovers fully. I’m interested to know if the others are sensitive to the needs of those that are sick, injured and failing. Animals seem to either rally around sick and injured or abandon them.

Pongo’s surgery was today. It was much more intense than we or the vet anticipated. They had to go through the muscle in his hindquarters next to the fascia over his spine, as close as they could safely go, to get a layer below any questionable tissue. Pongo’s going to have a tougher recovery this time because of the impact to his muscle and rats needing to hold themselves up to eat (to hold food with hands/front paws.) We really hope this second surgery got it all.

You’re very welcome. And thank you too!
The goodbyes are very hard. We know with Lolly’s age and potentially Pongo depending on his surgery in a few days, we may have more coming. It’s been a hard year for rats. They are worth it though.

Your pooch is adorable,as is Loki!
i would have never thought of a rat as a lovable type of pet until we went to put Lexi my cat of 20 years down. I saw a women with her 2 small children also sobbing , and in her hand cupped was the family pet rat . I am certain it had passed . I felt their pain .

We love our pets don’t we! Cats, Dogs , Rats and everything else in between. We all grieve when we lose something or someone we love!
We have had fish for the last 2 years in a 40 gallon tank. It’s been fun. My husband is determined to not put another cat or dog to sleep, it’s just too hard on us.....so we have fish :)
Thanks for this uplifting , happy post !

Wow - this is so much fun. What a good girl Lucy is to be so gentle with you sweet rats. You and Lucy both look fab in the crown, but I must say that Lucy is really rocking the jewelled necklace as a collar, I think you may have a hard time getting that off her Ladyship.

They are very intelligent, social and sweet pets. The big downside is very short lives and delicate health. We spent WAY more money and time at the vet in 2019 for rats than with Lucy. Since Nov. 2018 we have had at least one seriously ill or dying rat at a time, and that’s hard. They can be heartbreak pets but there’s a ton of love and personality packed into those tiny bodies.

You’re very welcome!

I’ll bet Lilypup would look grand in a tiara.

Lucy isn’t as verbal either. She’s WAY more attuned to sight and especially smells. But we repeat phrases like: “Where’s the rat? Say hi!” Or “Are you hungry?” Or “Beau!” (Her BEST friend -he knows “Lucy” too and they both get excited when we say the other’s name.) Lucy will hunt for my husband if I ask where he is, go sniff to see if she can pick up his scent. I guess we are terribly repetitive but it’s taught her some unintended and useful skills.

One other accidental skill: “Oops!” - or 4 letter words that I’m not supposed to say here - which get her running to see what tasty thing her clumsy mom dropped.

Thank you. We are lucky that Lucy is so good with them! We have had rats since before we had Lucy so they have always been part of her life here. She says hi gently, knows that they are “rude” and won’t respond to her polite play-bows inviting them to play, and doesn’t want to be touched by their sharp nails.

Recently, when sneaky Leia jumped down and had a little adventure on the other side of the room, I asked Lucy “where’s the rat?” and she trotted over to find Leia and gently touch her nose. Good dog.

Marilyn, that sounds hilarious!

To offset some of the nasty taste from a recent thread with some levity and cuteness, and because I’m about to make a photo dump from my mobile to computer, I thought I’d share some pet pics and news.

• First of all: I have a new canine “nephew” named Loki, who is a golden retriever/border collie cross, and he’s the cutest little pup ever, and SO smart, already mastering many behaviors on cue at not even 3 months old. He has his own Instagram where you can follow his adorable adventures: https://instagram.com/loki_pup.....8fu27icy3c

• My husband, who knows I’m a fan of Netflix’ The Crown and saw their season 3 re-enactment of Princess Margaret’s infamous bathtub photo with her Poltimore tiara, decided to get me an inflatable tiara for Christmas. I LOVE it. However, I’m afraid I am upstaged by the real royalty in the house, Lucy.
At est. 7 years old (5.5 years with us) she’s as full of sass, personality, and cuddles as ever. We love her, even if she and best friend Beau (my parents’ handsome senior golden retriever) are bossing Loki around a bit and not letting him play with them yet.
I would ask who wore it best, but I’m afraid I already know.

• We lost two rats this summer/fall, Izzy and Pippi, and that was hard. We knew after Izzy passed that Pippi was pretty weak (always a sweet gentle runt) and Lolly was just as old as Izzy, so we wanted to make sure no one was left alone.
• Shortly before Pippi declined we adopted 3 middle aged adult rats: Leia, a spunky explorer who is a quick-moving escape artist (but always comes home to the cage after exploring forbidden areas) with a black hood/white body and white “diamond” on her forehead; Minerva, a hooded “dumbo” with low, big ears who is the squishiest, softest rat we have EVER had, and will cuddle with you until she falls asleep; and Pongo, a large, handsome black boy with a rugged torn left ear (doesn’t bother him one bit.)
• Lolly, our remaining elderly rat, is now SUPER old at almost 38 months! I’ve never even had one make 3 years before, and Lolly got really sick with a respiratory illness this fall and lost half of her body weight, so we are REALLY glad she pulled through and made that milestone birthday in November. She’s the smaller black one with fuzzy balding hair. The bald patches are because she’s a Rex, a genetic variety with coarser hair and related to “naked” rats. When Lolly was younger her hair was super thick and black, but it tends to thin a lot as they age. We are still trying to keep weight on this old girl so she gets higher calorie, soft treats like yogurt, cheese, hummus, avocado, or egg to much.
• Pongo unfortunately seems to have some kind of cancer. He had a large mass appear suddenly on the surface of his back, had it surgically removed, and now a smaller lump is back and we are scheduled for a 2nd surgery next week. We are really hoping it goes well. He is a total sweetheart, and from the start he’s REALLY adored Lolly, and we’d like more time with this good boy. Fingers crossed.
I included some photos of Pongo angled to be in front of Lucy because he really is large, but not THAT large; the lack of perspective makes him look like a Rodent of Unusual Size.
• We had introduced all 3 new rats days before Pip passed. It was easy because the new rats had met others before (Pongo was a recent addition after losing his male cage-mate; all of the girls are spayed for health reasons so it’s safe for them to room together.) They just wanted to hang out immediately. The newbies seemed to sense that Pippi needed warmth and company in her final days so she got lots of cuddles, as did Lolly. Instant buddies.

So that’s what’s new with the critter fam!
