My BFF wore one of those to our prom. It was totally and completely NOT her style at all, but it was a hand-me-down from her sister. She wore flat, closed-toe (brown?) shoes with it, so in photos it kind of looks like cowboy boots peeking out. Meanwhile, it was the era of pastel dresses, and out of my huge high school class, only I and one other girl wore a red dress to the prom. Well, at least we stood out! Employees received 30% off. I had a payment plan and a percentage of my pay went into an account for more expensive items. Lucky me! Oh, how I loved my Gunne Sax dresses. I wore one to the Junior Prom and one to the Senior Ball. I had two Laura Ashley dresses that were worn to weddings. I really felt beautiful in those dresses. I used to pour over the Laura Ashley catalogues, but never had anything from them. A friend got married in a simple LA ballerina length dress, no veil, and carried white tulips. It was so very different/cool at the time (early 80's). It really probably isn't a mistake, but they DID look like they were made from table clothes, bed skirts and night gowns.
