Debbie you are so right. Lots of field research opportunities for this long ago Anthropology/Philosophy major .
Zaeobi - Yes, to the batteries running out and yes to colors and lighting. Blanche Dubois really teaches a fundamental lesson of life - lighting is everything .
Sally - Colors and reactions to them are very interesting. More about that in my next episode...

3 and 5 would be my favourites because that pink really suits you and those jeans look cozy. I also like that shearing jacket with the white jeans. Colour is quite personal and I definitely don't like to wear clothes if I'm not feeling the colour these days as I know it can drag my mood down, but that is just me.

Ooh I see - nice to e-meet you, 'Jay-me' I have a student with this same 'predicament' - even though I know it's not pronounced 'J'aime', I *still* have to remind myself every time I call on him - getting old & forgetful lol.

Aha, looks like my projection paid off - I commiserate with all my fellow introverts When it comes to being 'on', the batteries unfortunately don't last forever - I have to remember to give myself time to 'recharge' alone afterwards. Otherwise I'd probably be a lot more snippy on the regular, lol!

PS - Judging colour suitability can be difficult over photos (especially if taken under indoor lighting). It's possible that the shades look different to you than they do to us - even at home vs in-store lighting.

I am so sorry the store is so cold! I love it all. My color this year is purple. So that is my favorite.

When I worked retail for awhile I was amazed at the drama. I think most retail places have lots of it.

These outfits are all so chic and charming. You are a walking advertisement for the discerning thrift shopper! The shearling jacket looks so cozy and cute on you! I especially like the purple top and Icelandic vest outfit--uniquely you and so well put together. I used to work in a store where it was often cold enough that I had to bundle up ridiculously. It's quite a challenge to be chic and bundled at the same time, indoors. I hope the issues resolve for you, and if not, that you can move on with ease.

You look fab and I don't find any of these colors unflattering on you! Being cozy is supremely important, and who on earth could pass up a striped vintage Pucci jacket ?! The deep saturated pink *does* look dazzling, but everything looks good.

I am excited to hear all about your work at the charity shop--it's been an interesting discussion to read. As an introvert, it sounds quite challenging, just in terms of the human-to-human in-person-ness of it all :).

Mary Beth - Thank you! Yes staying warm beats color. I will try the first two with colors and see how it goes.
Jules - Ha! I actually see it as an old skill that I believe is akin to editing, critiquing and taking multi-choice tests. And I agree with you completely that the mark-ups must be justified.

Curated ‘junque’ (love this alternate spelling!) is trending hard. I don’t mind paying someone else to do the treasure hunting but the markup must make sense for what they are ‘curating’ and I find that’s not always the case. It’s almost like a new kind of skill to sort the real vintage/quality items from the knock offs etc.

Let me start by saying, that cold weather and I are non-simpatico, and when the temperture drops below 30F, my concerns about which colors or silhouettes are flattering, declined sharply in favor of just. stay. warm.

I think #1 and #2 look pretty good! That jacket is especially jaunty. I'd be curious to see the jacket and the sweater paired with colors, or lighter neutrals.

#3 looks amazing on you - I think the key is that you've styled it with the lighter pants, which gives it a lift and helps bring it together with your lighter hair. And I think it works well with your skintone.

Love #4 and #5 colors on you, you're giving us all the promise of spring eventually getting here :)

You all are definitely making me reconsider my idea of flattering colors. So helpful!
Sal - What I just wrote . Thank you!
Synee and Jaileen - Thank you- that coat was a great score.
Jenni - Ah, that is very interesting. So what you describe is sort of my ideal thrifting situation, charity shops lined up in a row with a bunch of volunteers that don't really sort for anything but condition. This is where the true gems and bargains can be found, but only if you have the patience for it. The "new" concept, which I suppose is designed to attract a wider audience, is to sort for desirability and make it easier for the casual thrifter to find something nice. I will let everyone know how it goes!
Lesley - !
Joyce - Absolutely, that is one of my strategies!

I’ve been thinking about the thrift store. Last week I went to 4 on a day off. These 4 are all incredibly close together, all donation based. One for the ambulance service, one for the Red Cross, one for Habitat for Humanity and one for our local hospice. I have donated to the latter two in the past.
My son shops at them too, purely to get things he wants for less money than retail. He found a wetsuit at one recently.
I go now for sustainability reasons. I don’t think any assistant would want to help me? Because I was just looking for inspiration to give myself a little clothing boost as I had struck some boredom recently. And I couldn’t believe what low prices for some fun things. I found a pretty, filmy, floaty top for $4! So I achieved my objective. It was NZ made as well. The label said it was a sample from SS2015 season.
Lots of the clothes did appear to be “junk” to me though.

I was just commiserating with a thrifting friend about recent price increases at our favourite charity shops. They moved from a side street to a new location on the main drag, and seem to have become a destination shop for out-of-towners! Good for them, but not so good for us local regulars. :-( Also, within the past 18 months (and during the pandemic no less) 3 new shops have opened up with offerings of ‘curated’ second hand (as well as craftwork and new items.). Each has a different theme: boho, country, and mid century - cloathing and home furnishings. I would rather hunt through ‘junque’ than let someone else have the fun!

You all are really the best! Supportive, kind and get it right away. Thank you!
catherine - The 'more please' made my morning!
Vildy - Yes! The current plan is to lean into the social media aspect. But as a donation based shop, we cannot really guarantee there will be brilliant pieces to find.
Suz - Yes! You also got it perfectly. I would say 70-80% of the customers come in and say wow, how beautiful, what a great job, congratulations, the store so much more inviting, etc. The others tell me how they actually prefer hunting through junk to find the gems (truthfully, this is me too). But mainly, they want to know why the prices went up (on average by $1.50!) and where are the books (no longer sold, but there is a dedicated book branch in the neighboring town). I could go on and on - it's been a real participant/observer fiesta.
Laurie Yes! Humans are so complicated and contradictory! And thank you about the encouragement regarding my colors. Truthfully I have not found anything special yet, but have high expectations especially as we head toward Pesach .
MsMaven - Ditto about the color encouragement - I am going to stop worrying about it and see what happens!

Let me add my opinion--same as many others. You look gorgeous in the purple and the pink. However, I love the neutral outfits and the way you have put them together. Cozy, comfortable, and inviting for a potential customer.

Your hair and eyes look so pretty above your mask - let's start there.

If I weren't focusing on "your colors" I wouldn't have evaluated the outfits for that - I particularly love #1, in fact. However, when we get to #4, I do see the "your color" aspect jump right out.

There is just always drama, isn't there? Sigh. I just had that discussion with my older son about humans and jobs. I'm curious if you've found any fabulous pieces since you are now seeing the inventory on a more regular basis?!

You look completely adorable. Pucci!!! I love it. I actually can't tell it's not your best colours here -- looks great with your hair somehow. And you've made it work with the column beneath. It's actually my favourite outfit here.

And these are all delicious finds. Wow. You look cozy and clever. Your customers are lucky to have you.

The issue you describe is interesting. Are the regular clientele angry about higher prices and the non-regular clientele disinclined to frequent a place they knew as "thrift"? I'm hoping to start my exploration of Victoria's thrift and consignment stores soon (as soon as Omicron retreats a bit) so I am all ears!

Maybe I've missed the point entirely but if folks want great quality curated vintage, isn't it just a matter of getting the word out that this store has it? I suppose with the online stuff it has authentication but in your location they can try on to their heart's content and probably get compliments right away on both how becoming it is and what clever shoppers they are!

You look beautiful all of these outfits, as usual. I would say that the pink sweater and jeans is my favorite of this group. Thanks for posting. More, please.

Ha! I didn't mean to be an international woman of mystery about my issues. Although I will admit there is a surprising amount of drama. Anyway, my main issue is that the store, which was and remains a charity shop with all the profits going to the charity that owns it, is still in the proof of concept phase. Basically the two store chain was renovated and made more upscale with a boutique look and slightly higher prices and it is yet to be seen if this concept works with a donation based store. This in turn leads to a certain amount of confusion among the customers and staff.
And, indeed, it is cold - cjh indeed each sweater is layered over an undershirt but it doesn't help my hands!
Brooklyn - The main issue is above - the rest will be in my memoir . I appreciate your opinion on the colors. I can never decide if they are working or not.
rachylou - The ladies that lunch look wouldn't really fly around here.
nemosmom - Thank you! The shop is completely donation based, and yet is trying to be somehow on a higher level than other donation based shops. Thus my main issue as described above.
Zaeobi - <Jay-me> exactly like Jamie but my mother got it into her head to spell it Jaime. And if my skin looks glowing or golden I am delighted! Yes, to what you say about introversion, although it turns out I have a surprisingly successful alternative store personality. But it wipes me out by the end of my shift and there is the danger of the short fuse. You understand exactly.
Joy and Kate and Mirjana - Thank you!
slim cat - Also tough times for shops in general with foot traffic very low.
Bijou - Yes, it makes sense that Australia has the same 'we forgot there was a winter when we built this' attitude .
Jenni NZ - Around here what I am wearing is considered dressy compared to the leggings and sweatshirts that would normally be expected.
Helena - You are so sweet. Thank you!
Vildy - Excellent point!
Janet - Yes, it is also hard to see in photos. I think the coat in #3 is actually cooler toned.
CarolS - That sweater belongs in a museum. It is unreal.
lyn67 - Thank you! It is my purple year!
Angie - Thank you - I thought you'd like the pink! I wish there was a sweater just like the the vintage one in that color.

That cashmere sweater and the shearling jacket are fantastic and styles I can get into ! Agreeing with Vildy in that with most of our faces covered now , colours are a lot more flexible.
