I love Allison! She has such a great eye and she's quite practical re wardrobe building.
My 3 words are Classic, Polished, and Undone.
Classic because I rely heavily on classic basics. I like clean lines and nothing fussy. My wardrobe is predominantly neutral colours. My purchases are not trend driven. If something suits my body and my style I'll try it. But, I'm not going to buy something because it's the in thing.
Polished because even if I'm wearing a simple tee and jeans, I always want to look put together. In this case, I'll gravitate to great accessories to elevate the outfit. Jewelry, footware and an interesting bag make all the difference here.
Undone because I want my classic, polished outfits to have a laid back vibe. Put together but relaxed and comfortable. My lifestyle is mostly casual at this point.

I am also working on posting more often. I always see things in my outfit WIWs that I don't see IRL. I try to post even when my outfits are just lounge wear. Sure perfect outfits and photos are nice, but I think it's helpful for everyone, including myself, to see real outfits, not just the special occasion one's. Plus, someone's loungewear outfit may give me an idea or a new brand to try for my own loungewear (of which I spend a lot of time in since I WFH).

For three words, this is an interesting exercise.

Your first word: The practical word for me would be casual or maybe soft. I do not like high maintenance clothing. I prefer machine washable or hand wash fabrics. I also have a lot of allergies and have to be mindful of materials (I'm looking at you angora, alpaca, and acrylic) so soft fabrics on my skin are a must. Fabrics used in knitwear makes these, especially sweaters/pullovers/cardigans, my most difficult to shop for items.

Your second word: Sporty has to be one of my words. I adore sneakers, Polo and Johnny collars, denim, hoodies, graphic tee's, joggers, utility pants, all of these are sporty pieces.

Your third word: I had to think hard about this one and finally settled on playful. When I consider the prints on the graphic tees and my love of colored sneakers, that is certainly a playful element. I like my outfit to make me smile and if my outfit makes someone else smile too, even better!

This was an interesting exercise. I will say in business settings, I still go for a classic look and a lot of black and other classic colors and monochromatic or solid looks, few patterns unless it's on a dress, this fits better with the environment I'm in. But for personal settings, I've really shifted to a casual/soft, sporty, playful style that I'm really enjoying at this leg of my style journey.

JH - really enjoying having you back!

Three words, eh? I know this is often a list of adjectives but I'm tempted to go in another direction. First let me say that anyone who's been here a while knows my style and priorities have changed quite a bit in 15 years, though I try to carry what I learned to dress as a stylish professional to my new role of home duties.

What keeps coming to mind for me is "rough tough creampuff." This is a phrase someone I used to teach with used to describe our kids who were all bluster and bristle outside but tender and sweet inside. Sabras, if you will. :)

What I mean is I love to take a girly look and toughen it up a little. Rare for me to go full-on girly-girl or full-on RATE.

My style moniker has been fun arty urban prince. I don’t think I’ve really changed, but funky urban prince is shorter.

I want to convey that I don’t take what I wear too seriously. I have a significant magpie gene. And I need a charcoal denim intervention. Lot of black and gray and an eye towards edginess. Short and a bit gamine so that’s where the Prince comes in; androgyny works better on me than masculine.

I'd sort of landed on Classic, Unfussy/Simple and Comfort previously but watched the latest video from Signe from Use Less this week (If this what you like wearing, this is your style personality) and am pondering adding some sort of Romantic word as well. Then anastasiaks comment above now makes me want to reconsider the Comfort one as well, I am really thinking of a feeling with that word. Will also take a listen to that podcast.

This was my original reasoning for my word choices:

- Classic - It takes my eye awhile to get used to trends and I have a strong preference for skirts and dresses which tend to give a more classic vibe.
- Unfussy/Simple - I don't like to have to think too much about my outfit once I have it on for the day, don't like too many layers
- Comfort - Both physical and psychological so means different things in different contexts e.g. what I wear at home I am not comfortable wearing out of the house

Such great responses! Mine would be relaxed, lighthearted, sophisticated.

Relaxed because I live a casual lifestyle and can most often be found paddling a Kayak or hiking a trail. Even when dressing up, though, I don’t like anything that is even remotely fussy.

Lighthearted because my favorite clothing items are my collection of graphic tees, which often say silly things like “Keep Calm and Eat Bacon.”

Sophisticated because even though all of the above is true, when dressing for going out I like to have that element of stylish sophistication/structure in my outfits.

Hi Jenny,
I’ve been listening to the everyday style podcast for close to six months now. I think it’s a fantastic series and it’s taught me a lot about style. The host also has a lesson you can do to find your every day style, and she also makes you select three words. Interestingly, she doesn’t put limits on what those style words are, but she makes a really good point about trying to stay away from the word comfortable. The way she explains it, comfortable is a way you feel and not a way you look. I think some of the other words people in the forum have used, like casual or relaxed might be more helpful. Words like casual and relaxed also are a bit more about how you look, and not necessarily a feeling. Also, I think everyone deserves clothes that are comfortable, regardless of whether they are casual or formal. Just a thought, so feel free to ignore my advice if it’s not helpful.

My three words are feminine, elevated, and lush. Lush for me is in terms of color, print, and texture. So wearing velvet slippers in the winter with a paisley silk blouse. I’m still fiddling around with my words though so they could change.

Best of luck!

Suntiger: I really appreciated your explanations of your words. It's amazing how much meaning we can pack into a single word, I suspect that's why only three words can be so powerful.

Bonnie: I like casual, eclectic, modern quite a lot!

BlueJay: I completely understand how it can take a while to figure out your words. There are so many options. And yes, there is quite a bit of difference between casual at home looks and in-office looks.

Runcarla: I love the idea of Elevated Tomboy-- I think the tension between contradictions is part of what makes outfits interesting.

Jaime: once again, I love your words. Undone and offbeat in particular appeal to me.

Brooklyn: I like your explanation about how you put together your words. It's funny because I relate to Bohemian a lot more in home decor than I do in my clothing. How odd, maybe this is something I could work on-- bringing more bohemian energy into how I dress.

cat2: Pulled-together warm classic seems like a great mix!

Helena: I love your words too. I know what you mean about understated-- I bought a bright orange bicycle which I love with all my heart, but gets a lot of attention. It turns out that I don't like being the center of attention very much, so I very much see the appeal of understated.

I am so delighted to read everyone's words! Thank you for sharing.

Dee: Seems like you can't go wrong with classic, modern, and chic as your guides.

Suz: I love the idea of a fashion persona, and I love laid-back, luminous,

garçonne! Laid-back would also be a great word for my style-- I also have an active biking/walking/hiking lifestyle (although I bought my very first car a few years ago at the age of 43 so I do drive more than I ever used to and I don't take transit nearly as often since I moved from Washington, DC to Wisconsin.)

I'm also very interested in exploring the Kibbe system. Someone mentioned it on a financial forum I'm part of and I looked at the system and tried to figure out what I might be but I found it confusing so I really have no idea what my type might be.

Sal: Ooh, I also love breezy and bold! I think you are totally right that it is the tension that makes the best looks.

Jenni: I love the story of how you spell your name! And I love Sassy Shoemaker Elf! I'm totally with you on comfort and fun!

Angie gave me the moniker Earthy Sophisticate, which works well for me.
My style words are streamlined, exotic, feminine.

Streamlined: no clutter/faff/excess layers, volume in drapy fabrics only and not hanging wider than hips/shoulders, long lines/minimal horizontals (pants and long skirts instead of shorts and short skirts).

Exotic: a blend of Brooklyns "moody" and "boho". Deep/rich/spicy colors, Asian patterns, bold gold and copper jewelry. Dressy and arty as opposed to casual and folksy though.

Feminine: full makeup even at home, long hair (atm that means wigs and extensions), preference for skirts/dresses (as long as it's warm). Not girly/coquette at all, or very bombshell though.

A standard summer outfit would be a Thai maxi skirt, black tank top, gold sandals, bold earrings (hoops or teardrop shape) and cuff or stacked bracelets.

Hi Jenny and welcome back! I think you’ve done a good job defining your words. Great summer outfit!

I’ve not done this exercise even though I really enjoy AB’s posts. Honestly I get a little stuck on the first word! Practical or comfortable seem a little too obvious for me, and it doesn’t ring quite true as the most defining feature when I think of my most-worn pieces. Eclectic? I dunno. I’ll have to think about this some more.

Years ago we arrived at a sort of “refined rock’n’roll” moniker for my style. I suspect it’s evolved a little. I still seek the edge or rebelliousness of the rock’n’roll thing but it’s probably more subtle now. And I definitely aspire to a more refined version of that — there is a fine line of embellishment that takes a look over the line for me, and that line has shifted to the less maximal these days. I seek looks that have something interesting in them — a print, an unusual detail, a great color — but try to keep the look balanced. However, the other night we went out for a nice dinner with friends, and I felt fab in and outfit comprised entirely of statements! See finds below. I think it worked because the pants are dark, solid, and simple, and I reined in some of the volume of the top by semi tucking it at the waist and tucking some of the shoulder under my bra straps to keep the line neater. I kept the jewelry more understated since I was wearing bold color and shapes. Overall it does seem to fit my preferred style as described above, but sort of defies an easy first word choice.

But…speaking of “easy” — I do seek ease in my outfits — perhaps that’s a clue. Not too buttoned up, precious, overly matchy, prim, or tight. Maybe “easy” is my first word!

This is a style moniker Angie has suggested for me (in a comment to her blog post "Your Style Moniker for 2019," January 15, 2019):
Playful Casual Elegance.
It still describes my style pretty well.

My style skews classic and sporty in equal measure, and I
like to incorporate colour. There’s some element of the tomboy as well as a smidge of off duty Katherine Hepburn/Grace Kelly/Jackie O retro elegance - the latter being aspirational. I’ve been unable to nail it down to 3 words, though. For persona, I’ve been toying with Elevated Tomboy - but it sounds so contradictory!

I like your outfit and I think you've described your style well. I hope we see more outfits on the forum!

I also read Allison's book, it was a fast and fun read. I took a photo of her word wheel as I need more synonyms! I don't know where I land with my words. I've been taking photos of my outfits and then describing them to see if there are any through lines. I go in to the office once a week, and those outfits are very different than my casual shorts and t-shirts I wear at home. Finding my words and my style is a work-in-progress!

Your three words define your outfit perfectly. I'll try to do the same for my style. After looking at some of my outfit photos I came up with Casual, Eclectic, and Modern. Casual describes my lifestyle. Eclectic describes my preferences which are varied. Modern describes the hopeful result of my efforts.

Thanks for the thread - it’s useful to come up with a thoughtful definition once in a while. Although I’m wishing sometimes for bolder styles, mine is very simple.
1. Minimal. As for everything - occasionally I buy a colorful summer item but mostly keep my color palette small and neutral. I hardly wear prints unless they are Marimekko or stripes. I appreciate small details and interesting cuts. Simplicity is not boring if it’s done right.

2. Relaxed. When considering a silhouette, at least one of the garments I wear must be oversized or fluid. Or both, a top and a bottom - I’m not afraid to look shapeless, still proportions are important.

3. Elegant. Not that it’s something aspirational for me or a goal , rather a reminder to keep my oversized outfits from getting into sloppy territory.

Welcome back! I love Allison Bornstein and this exercise is fun. I revisit it often and my words always change a little haha, but the general theme is the same. My latest iteration, for which I really took her guidelines about the purpose of each word to heart, is:

- practical: be it corporate wear, Uber casual (this is 90% of my lifestyle), dressy or anything else, I will choose what is appropriate and practical *for the occasion*. To the grocery store I wear low-key neutrals in casual pieces. To a very festive and colourful wedding, I wore a bold emerald green dress and large gold jewellery. Both were my style because both were practical for the very different occasions.

-polished: regardless of above, I always aspire to look neat and tidy, finished, and like I put an effort in. This is as true for my grocery store outfit as my wedding outfit above. "Current" is another word that could be my 2nd one, as I like to feel 'up to date's in my style.

-understated: easier to define by how I *don't* want to feel. I don't want to stand out or be a focal point; I hate that feeling. In my emerald dress I blended into the colourful wedding palette ... Something too neutral and low-key would have stood out like a sore thumb. At the grocery store, the opposite.

Always fun to muse on these and read others', thank you for this thread!

I have never tried this exercise. Pulled-Together Warm Classic? Depending on the day, the pulled-together may be aspirational. And I have a classic wardrobe that I am reworking slowly to have a warmer mix of colors.

That’s a very cute outfit. I see playful and artsy. Definitely not sloppy!

I have 3 words for my (aspirational) style, although they don’t quite fit your criteria. Mine are: modern moody bohemian.

Modern is mostly about silhouette. I like a streamlined, long, strong looking silhouette. A warrior silhouette. I like my pants and jeans long and slouchy, my skirts long or asymmetrical, my tops cropped or angular. My shoes flat and rugged. I also like my bags to be practical and modern. Modern is also about juxtaposition - especially combining dressy with casual.

Moody is mostly about vibe, especially palette. I like a low contrast, tonal look. A dark, muted, glimmering, smouldering or abstract palette that evokes drama eg sunrise in the desert, a storm over mountains, the dying embers of a fire, the rusty hull of a ship, a Moroccan spice market, the interiors of a medieval church, a forest after rain. Rather than, say, a crisp, fresh, bright or pretty palette. There is definitely an aspirational aspect here.

Bohemian is mostly about how I put together outfits. I like embellishments, especially jewellery, texture and pattern. I like to draw inspiration from around the world and from history, art and interior decor. I like items and combinations that are somewhat unconventional and that have a natural, lived in vibe. I am drawn to one-off, unique and vintage pieces. I try to balance the vintage with the modern.

Welcome back Jenny. I agree that your outfit represents your three words nicely. I see the artsy in the accessories and your hair, and the playful in the vibe of the skirt especially.
I am not 100% set on my three words but I think they are something like undone (because I never look quite polished, and suggests the casual element of my outfits), offbeat (or unexpected, because I wear a lot of older, vintage and somewhat unusual pieces), and elegant (as my aspirational feeling in my clothing).
I am enjoying reading everyone's words above, thanks for starting the thread!

Hi Jenny H, good name! I was a Jenny spelling until age 15 when Mum suggested I could spell it with an i if I liked, after all my full name is Jennifer. It sounded fun so I changed it. Wish I had realised then that I would spend the rest of my life saying “Jenni with an i”! It doesn’t feel like me the old way.
Onto your question. Like Suz I feel better with the “fashion persona” idea and have stuck with the one I chose with forum help in 2019, the Sassy Shoemaker’s Elf. Speaks to my love of shoes, a bit aspirational, and also because I think I may be some kind of gamine as well, which feels elfin. But I can have a go at the three words.
More so since the pandemic, and getting older (now 63), comfort is *the* most important to me. I will no longer buy uncomfortable. So 1st word will be comfort.
Second word can be sassy, using my persona. I try to have something a bit sassy, usually shoes or earrings, in winter maybe knitwear. I still wear hand knits from the 90s, for example.
Third word I think maybe fun. I am short and a bit plump, pear shaped with a side of apple, so elegant or glamorous are not easy to achieve, I have given up on trying for those.
Comfort sassy fun!
I like your outfit in this pic. Cheers.

I like your outfit - it is put together and polished yet still casual. Love your hair too - I always love curly bob hairdos!! There are lots of great casual outfits on the forum so I think you will enjoy getting and giving inspo.

My three words are

Breezy Elegant Bold

Breezy to me means ease and relaxed and casual - or undone.

Elegant - trying to wear pieces that elevate my outfits to make them a bit special - not too trendy - but not too classic either

Bold - I feel best with something distinctive - a bright colour, a large scale print, big sunglasses, large sunhat.

For me it’s the tension between these three aspects of style that makes the best looks. If I lean too far into breezy I look sloppy (this can happen) and if I don’t have enough bold I feel bored.

Nice outfit, and I agree with Dee that the playful and the comfortable elements are both exemplified in the look. You look relaxed and happy!

My own 3 words encapsulate how I want to look and feel in outfits, and also, what we sometimes on the forum call a "fashion persona." I didn't come up with them using Allison Bornstein's categories, specifically, but it turns out the words do appear in the order she suggests. How cool is that?

I'm a laid-back, luminous garçonne.

1. "Laid-back" because I live an active biking/ walking/ hiking/ transit riding vs. driving lifestyle and my home is in a suburb, so my clothes have to be relaxed and comfortable and unfussy and easy-care enough to take me on those adventures. Not *all* my clothes, of course -- but I always need to think of the practical element first. So yes, I will wear white pants -- but probably they will be jeans, so I can easily wash them.

2. "Luminous." This refers in part to my silver hair and silver accessories but also to the fact that my aspirational style is always more polished than my lifestyle might seem to dictate, so I'm always reaching for a balance, or for opportunities to add a bit of shine and polish to my otherwise practical outfits. Taken literally, it encourages me to add a bit of sparkle or shine to almost every outfit. Metaphorically, it encourages me to take things up a notch, as you've done with your outfit (skirt vs. sloppy joggers.)

3. Garçonne: In Kibbe terms, I'm probably a gamine. Not that I find Kibbe easy to parse. Anyway, whether I'm technically gamine or not, my style includes a strong dose of the feminine boyish. I wear a lot of "borrowed from the boys" looks -- but scaled neatly vs. oversized. Button front shirts, blazers, trousers, oxfords, mariner tees—that kind of thing. I also wear feminine pieces, but juxtaposed -- or feminine pieces with strict lines, think Coco Chanel. I want to feel energetic, spritely, and modern in my clothes. For me, that's the garçonne.

That’s a cute outfit, and seems to fit nicely with your 3 words. I can see the playful and creative elements, like the pattern in the skirt and how you’ve accessorized .

I think my own personal style is a bit similar to yours, although my guiding words are classic, modern and chic, I always have some type of classic element in my outfits but I don’t want to look too dated either, so there needs to be something more modern happening as well. I also aspire to look polished or chic in some way.

Hello! I'm back. I used to post fairly regularly but this was many years ago. I am inspired to come back and post here more as I would like to move past the sloppiness I moved into during the pandemic years.

In that effort, I am making effort to better define my personal style and to dress in a more polished manner. I recently read the book Wear it Well by Allison Bornstein and plan to work through her method. Her big hook is the three word method which becomes your guiding light when shopping or putting together outfits. You pick three words to define your style:

Your first word: Practical word, defined by your regulars. Your comfort zone, where you feel at home. A word that connects the dots and creates your style.

Your second word: Something aspirational, a north star to guide you forward: where creativity, curiosity, and grown come into play.

Your third word: offers an emotional counterpoint and describes how you want to feel in your clothes.

I'm curious if anyone has done this or something similar and if so, I invite you to share your words.

I'm not ready to decide on my words but I am considering:

unfussy or comfortable

artsy or creative

playful

I know that my lifestyle is super casual with not a lot of reason to dress up and that I much prefer comfort and clothes that are easy to wear. I love creativity and the arts and absolutely consider those aspects more aspirational than actually present in my current style. And I love bright colors and playful prints such as polka dots and stripes, so I think playful captures that well.

Here's a photo of what I wore to a party on the 4th and I feel like it was a pretty nice step up from the sloppy joggers and tee that I would have worn before starting to put more effort into my dress.

All comments and feedback are welcome!
