I like those but agree s better question is, “ Am I dying to wear it right now?”

That means I love it even though might have to wait for the right weather , event ( an planned upcoming event hopefully).

These are actually the very questions I ask myself.

I think of fit as being the test of the happiness factor and fabric composition, I almost never buy in advance because I like to imagine that I will surprise myself with my preferences, and I usually wear the things I buy with the things I own almost immediately.

More questions I need to ask myself:

- Does it suit my lifestyle? (Is it wash and wear, is it delicate or fussy, does it shift around or annoy me in any way?)

- Do I already have this? (Do I have a piece that performs the same function as this? If so, does this replace the old one? Is it better? Or does it provide more variety in a way that I can use? Which leads to...)

- Am I willing to give up something else in my wardrobe to make room for this?

- Will I actually wear it? (It seems so simple but sometimes I fool myself, and I need to be more honest upfront and admit that even though something fits and “looks good” I just may not ever reach for it.)

I have learned to shop with a general idea of what I DON’T need, so I can avoid pitfalls. As for selecting the RIGHT item, I have to say it’s gut. I feel a really, really strong gut response when something clicks— visually and in terms of fit. And then I’m a goner and am way beyond logic in about 6 seconds.

Interesting! I like YLF polls. When I buy something I ask myself:

1. whether it fits, of course

2. how does it make me feel? (happy, "me" ?)

3. will it feel ok wearing this piece repeatedly, let's say 10 times in the season? (this following Jenn's post about 30 wears - it was very helpful, thank you Jenn!). That's because I want to keep a smallish wardrobe due to recent "conversion" to minimalism.

I admit that I should give more attention to the third question "Does it go with items I already own?". I remember cases when I did not ask myself this question and then I found myself in trouble.

As others have noted #1 and #3 make sense. I often buy something to wear for later in the season or for vacation so #2 does not apply to me. I would never buy anything if I applied that rule.
I have a very focused style and colour palette that works for me. I look at something and think about how the item works into my style. I don't go outside my colour palette.
If all of the above criteria are met then the item has to make me happy.

Ya know, I see question 2 as equivalent to my ‘where can I wear this?’ I never even thought about the fact that I buy my Puffy for the next winter when NAS comes around in July (July, right?). I just need some question to stop me from buying for Coachella, the Met Ball, and the Riviera...

Those are great questions to start with. I would probably modify no. 2, as others have noted. I can see no. 2 as addressing the issue of buying things *too* far out of season--like at an end-of-season clearance, when you might not be able to wear the item for several months. I know that I have gotten burned that way, by buying stuff too far in advance, because when the time comes to wear it, I find that I am no longer interested in it.

Some questions I ask myself:
. Do I like this item so much that I can't wait to wear it?
. If I buy this item, will a similar, loved item in my wardrobe not get as much wear?
. If I buy this item, will I be satisfied with it overall, or will I continue looking for a better version of the item? (Am I settling?)

Question 1 is given for me. Question 3 most of the time, although I am an emotional shopper and sometimes I just love a piece although it does not go with many of my other clothes and I just buy it and try to make it work.
Price is important to me, I always ask myself if the price is right in terms of quality of the item - fabric, design, tailoring etc. I also often ask myself about a potential longevity of the item, especially if I am to pay more, I want a fairly classic piece that I can have in my wardrobe for years. And if the piece is more expensive, it should be versatile.
Question 2 is not a one I ask, I buy a lot of clothes off season and they wait for their turn. A couple of months ago, I found a beautiful winter coat, very expensive originally, for a fraction of the price. It is very streamlined, classic wool coat and it is now waiting for next winter.
Last but not least - does the piece make me happy? Do I feel like I want to wear it immediately?

Definitely 1 and 3...although even 3 might not be relevant to someone undergoing a major style shift.

I tend to ask myself -- does it make me happy, do I have occasions for wearing it, do I have the support acts or can I afford them, does it fit with my overall style persona?

I think my version of #2 would be something like:
-am I excited to wear this next time X event rolls around?
-Do I need more options for X events? And
-Is this as good or better than the options I already own for X event?

(Bc I think it's easy to accumulate more options than I really need for rare events, esp because I tend to default to the same ones repeatedly since I don't wear them that often.)

I often ask "where are you going in that?" (Borrowed from Bridgette Raes.) Very good for keeping me from purchasing a lot of pretty, impractical things.

1 and 3 sound wise. While I understand why 2 might work for others, that question is not important to me. If I know that I am going to need a certain item in some months, I will happily buy it when I find it, in particular if the price is reasonable.

These are questions I always ask myself before buying:
- Is it in my colour palette?
- Does it match my fashion persona / style statement?
- Can I easily imagine styling it in different ways?

I agree with 1 and 3. Would alter 2 to - what occasions will I wear this (dinner wedding, winter work) and also add

4. Do I own anything too similar?
5. Can I afford this?
6. Checking laundering needs (I can forget this)

With 4 there are times for duplication or almost duplication but we should do this mindfully. I have ended up with four black sweaters when 1 or at the most 2 are needed.

As for #2 - not the best rule of thumb. You absolutely need to shop for items in advance - longer than to wear next week. And some like the to shop off season. Most of what I got for Spring and Summer is sold out now. I had to wait months for the weather to cooperate.

Is it a flattering silhouette?
How many things can it go with presently in my wardrobe?

In a local shop last weekend, the young sales clerk and I were discussing how to decide whether to buy a given article of clothing. She said she suggests customers ask themselves three question:
