You look so polished and lovely! I love that you have decided to make January more enjoyable for yourself. I love your out-and-about outfit! It still looks dressy to me. The yoga pants are nicely done and don't read "fitness/active wear" to me. I would say most women where I live in the mountains dress similarly for winter, including errands, lunch out, etc.

Also -- my dream outfits <3 I used to wear similarly styled outfits a TON. With health issues I haven't felt as confident in leggings, even around the house. But it's a goal to return to them. I'm trying to get away from wearing nondescript, somewhat sloppy sweats around the house. You've inspired me! :)

Haha I think most of the Northern Hemisphere feels this way about January, especially after all the spending and socialising during the winrer holidays - which sucked for me at school, since it's my birthday month and no one was ever in the mood to celebrate (I remember even having exams on my birthday, haha)!

You've done well to plan ahead, though - all your outfits work well for your formality levels! Love the dark teal green the most, but the taupe is great too

Anyway, maybe there's a lesson there - rather than hoping January would be somehow different, maybe embrace it for what it is instead (the calm *after* the holiday storm makes it perfect for planning ahead - like a hibernation month before spring).

Signed,
~ Someone who learnt this the hard way, after many botched birthdays (thanks, childhood - and COVID)

Very nice! I especially love the layered taupe in your JPE outfit. Elegant! And of course, with an extra serving of the elegance that comes from knowing what you need and want, and not getting distracted by the noise.

Thanks everyone! I love how we all have different 'levels of dress' models ... of course the key being, we need to dress to the level that makes us happy!

Robin, there are so many great looser options and some that easily pass for a dress pant - at least that I've seen. You might have luck at Athleta, Lulu or even Uniqlo (or even Old Navy actually, who do a great job with activewear).

Sharan, just presentable enough works too! And that is my philosophy with lip colour ... it HAS to go on at some point in the day, no matter what!

Love the third outfit, great coat! I'm with you in despising winter. Bring on the warmth and sun :)

I'm starting to work out my different dressing levels- but learned this year that, even if just at home (super rare for me), I need at least one elevated and/or interesting piece in the outfit. For errands and other casual occasions, at least 2 elevated or interesting pieces. For workdays, at least 3.

Great outfits, definitely polished enough! I wear jeans and sweaters on the weekends but could work on my warm lounge wear for after work. I have a few comfy sweatshirts but not many pants that are comfortable enough (always a problem for me). I don't wear leggings except for working out because I hate that constricted feeling.

I love these formulas and yes, weather extremes are tricky. January is not as bad as February for me - by then I am so sick of the endless heat. I do have many summer dresses and currently am enjoying wearing them and going for swims at the local beach.

Very clever, Helena! These outfits are just the ticket. I really like that cropped sweatshirt, too, and can see why it is a favorite. The UGG slippers are cute, with their loafer styling!

At this time of year, sometimes I don't get dressed in non-workout gear until dinner time. I do try to make it happen, though, regardless of how late it is. Otherwise, I feel lousy--and I can tell you know that feeling. :)

p.s. I like your "just polished enough" category, too. When I saw JPE, I guessed it to be "just presentable enough"--haha! Your wording is far more apt!

I love it when someone finds formulas! Or as you say, levels of dress.

January is usually the start of real winter for us, and we're having a pretty typical one right now - not super cold but highs in the 50s, lows in the 30s (only a few light freezes so far). I run cold so in some ways getting dressed is easy (no worries about being too hot) but in others it's not fun (one layer of leggings is not enough and my fingernails are usually lavender-blue).

For working at home, I'm usually in my uniform of full skirt with soft petticoat, long sleeve t-shirt, and short wool cardigan. Tights plus slippers aren't enough, and I discovered this week that my feet were cold in even layered socks (contact with the cold floor). Right now I'm layering thick long knee socks + tall Mukluk slipper boots. Oh and two pair of fingerless gloves: thicker knit mitts, and thin silky liners because of the itch. When I go for a walk I'll put on tall boots, usually Eccos, and gloves and depending on the weather a cropped jacket, shawl, or scarf.

For off days, I'm in straight leg jeans and a sweater, or a long sleeve t-shirt and jacket or flannel shirt. I found a company with fitted flannel shirts (!!!) so I'm enjoying pairing pretty plaids with a coordinating solid t-shirt. This combination is fine when puttering around the house or sewing, but if I sit down for an extended period I need to grab a blanket. I'm also meditating on a different style of Mukluks slippers to wear with jeans. I've got some good puffers, but my jacket game is not good. Currently I am searching for a short jacket with a two-way zipper.

Well done! I love your JPE outfit.
I totally agree it's better to aim to accept the weather & time of year and make the best of it (whatever that means to you!), rather than try to hate it into nonexistence. On that note I was actually happy that true winter temps finally arrived this week, as I had only worn my new splurgey Rudsak puffer once this season.

Frankly, January is always a big month for me for shopping. Many of the things I've been eyeballing during the year are now on sale, so I am ordering quite a few things this month. It also seems to be a natural time for me to consider my style and try things that are 180° from what I was wearing the previous year. I might post about that later in the month.

You are adorable and I love your attitude! The new sweatshirt is so great on you! Super colour, as you said, and a nice shape. You look positively elegant in the long coat/ yoga pants!

I stay happy in heavy wool cardigans, bootes with alpaca wool socks, and leather comfortable booties that are flat and warm. Full length pants in a heavy fabric are warm. You might layer a tee or tank under your top layer. I use cashmere sweaters as top layers, something warm and cozy. I even have a couple of woolly tanks that are in constant rotation for January. After the brights and patterns of December I am ready for plain and dark clothes. If you want color stay away from anything that looks festive. Plan to bring back reds in February and spring pastels soon after. That will help and make January seem shorter. Bright coats are good mood boosters. I added orange and olive sweaters for a bit of happy color in January. Sweater dresses are warm and cosy. Paired with a quilted vest they can be warm enough and a change from pants. You will want something on your legs. I use lined tights.

I find myself nodding along with you as l sit here with the lights on at three in the afternoon!January can be a pretty uninspiring fashion month but you have shown what a little positivity can do turning the doldrums into something creative and you look fab.Spending money on lounge wear can feel blah but when it’s what we wear alot of the time at home it totally makes sense.

You are making leggings/athletic wear look absolutely fabulous! I have totally written off those kind of bottoms for anything but working out but you are making me have second thoughts! Well done!! You are having a brilliant January, IMHO!

Hi all, and Happy New Year!

As some of you may know, January is not my favourite month (read: Helena is miserable in January). I find it long and too cold and generally too gray and I would happily sit on the couch with tea and a blanket for 31 days straight.

This usually translates into a fashion crisis because I am not motivated and revert to tired old sweats which then make me feel kinda crappy.

Well not this year friends! You CAN teach an old dog new tricks! I decided to accept that deep winter is a time when comfort trumps all and anything I can do to make that feel better is a good thing, so in Nov/Dec I set my sights to augmenting my active/comfy wear and so far, I am enjoying the outcome (which is basically a small but mighty capsule of pieces that look nice and feel comfortable and comforting).

My last three days of outfits are a good representation of my three levels of dress a la January.

1. Uber casual ... I LOVE the colour of my new cropped sweatshirt and my Ugg slippers are my favourite thing at the moment! I am living in these navy leggings at home and they are thin enough for me to comfortably layer my navy sweatpants over them to go for a walk or just for when I feel extra-chilly.

2. JPE ... my taupe sweatshirt matches my taupe puffer exactly, which I think adds a touch of "just polished enough" for quick errands. These leggings are a little thicker and my Blondo chelsea boots make it all feel a touch less gym-wear.

3. As dressy as I want to be ... okay I wouldn't wear this out for dinner, but for lunch with my Dad it will do the trick. Flared leggings aka yoga pants, but with a proper sweater vs. a sweatshirt, and a proper coat vs. a puffer.

What do you wear to stay happy during gloomy January (or to stay cool during roasting January for the southern hem fabbers!)?
